  Yep. Twister bad, leads to fornication. I remember that we were told that christians wouldn't partake in such a hedonistic game.

  FHN: I remember the same things, but I'm not from Texas. I remember being told that we shouldn't burn incense. I remember one brother who claimed that necklaces and earrings for men came from the homosexual community therefore christians would not copy those fads. And I remember some brothers frowning on the public display of affection(PDA). They used the same reasoning that your speaker did. He wasn't taken very seriously about it. In fact we had a joke about it, if we saw someone touching or holding hands we would run up to them and point at them and say: "NO PDA! NO PDA!".

  if you can possibly digest one of the worst study articles the society has ever written, you will see just how devious and manipulative they are with past and present truth.. the two studys articles are from march 1st, 2004 watchtower.. i'll briefly (if that's possible!

  ) summarize both articles.

  Wow. Thanks, Ann. The light got brighter in 1922 and then went dark again in 1995. I love that all this came from the same year Watchtower. I was always so busy worrying about the "generation" change that I completely missed this. Thanks again!

  "I won't attend a ceremony that must be an affront to God."

  Of all the posts so far, this makes the most sense to me. I believe we will skip it this year, for the first time in 30 years, just to see how well our fade is working. So far, it seems to be going better than expected.

  It makes sense if you still believe in God and consider yourself a Christian.

  I have been leaning toward the agnostic way of thinking. The Bible as the inspired word of God is highly suspect. Jesus as the savior, ransom, messiah or whatever is based only on the Bible. No other proof. If organized religion is the way to God, then it's a pretty sorry way that I don't want part of.

  So I don't consider it an affront to God if I go. It's just another organized religious tradition with no real meaning to me or him. The same as Catholic Christmas mass. I'll go, see some old friends, probably get invited to go out afterwards, probably go and have a good time.

  reminded me of the way that a Witness could never "disagree" with a doctrine. They could only "not understand" it or "be confused" by it. That always pissed me off. It implied that the problem was with the individual Witness, for not understanding the doctrine; whereas is was actually with the Governing Body, for teaching crap.

  Yep. Try arguing a point with a JW and sooner or later you'll get the ole "we have to wait on Jehovah for clarification" argument. How can you debate or argue with illogical ramblings like that?

  When to build a new congregation

  the thread about the mood of the congregation got me to thinking about when new halls are built when attendance doesn't seem to justify it.. does a congregation whose attendance is stagnant, maybe decreasing a little and who is sharing a hall with another congregation or two need to build a new hall to call its own?

  looking at it strictly from a local financial standpoint, it doesn't make sense.

  why add a burden to the friends in building a new building and having all new mortgages and expenses?

  But, if you think in WT terms, maybe it does make sense. Why? You get them all excited about new property, and building a new building. Donations go up. Time in service may not go up, but time dedicated to planning/building the new hall keeps them busy. A congregation that is encouraged to build a new building every twenty years or so will believe that it is God that is making it happen(even if the average city attendance is not growing). As the new hall is ready to move in, the Circuit or District overseer uses the dedication talk as a way to motivate the congregation to do more in the ministry. You've got a new hall, now fill it, so we can build more. This is Jehovah's will. Meanwhile, after all the work is done and money donated, the WTS will come in and add a new spanish congregation because of the influx of legal and illegal immigrants in the area with no added cost to them.

  Make sense or am I just thinking too much?

  Having grown up a JW, I was indoctrinated into believing it was all good. But as I started doubting and outright disagreeing with some things, I found the chronological doctrines the most confusing. And rightly so, for once you research it properly, it doesn't add up. At best, it's an interpretation, a possibility(albeit very, very slight). It is not fact nor a probability, there are no facts to support it as theory even, therefore it shouldn't be presented as fact.

  Anyone remember the momentous year of 1995? In May of that year there was a trilogy of study articles on 'flashes of light' where the understanding of the 'sheep and goats' parable as going on in the present day was given as one of the proofs that Jehovah was blessing his servants the WTS. There were also references to the same understanding twice in February that year.

  We know that viewpoint changed. When? That October! Complete U-turn only 5 months later!

  Ann, do you have the references for those articles? I'd like to look those up and compare them. I guess if it's all in the same year, it should be easy to reference in the index, but we know how the WTS conveniently forgets to list some of the references.
