'If in this life only we have hoped in Christ, we are of all men most to be pitied' 1 Corthinians 15:19 NWT
I do not understand what Paul means by "We are of all men most to be pitied"
Perhaps someone could explain that more clearly?
this subject is coming up this month in the tms.
i just thought i would start a post for newbies or lurkers.
if you have any scans of the awake inside cover that would be awesome.

i usually dismiss the "drinking the kool aid" scenarios that are posted from time to time, but the latest wt has another bit of fearmongering.
the quote from page 20, para 17. elders who are reading this article can draw some useful conclusions from the account we have just considered: (1) the most practical step that we can take to prepare for the coming attack of the assyrian is that of strengthening our faith in god and helping our brothers to do the same.
(2) when the assyrian attacks, the elders must be absolutely convinced that jehovah will deliver us.
Thank you Jeffro, Scully and Pterist for your comments.
Now it is clear that the JWs must keep TWO contradictory thoughts in their minds at all times.
1) The Watchtower provides direction and information from Jehovah. It is spirit directed.
2) The Watchtower is NOT inspired by Jehovah. They never say "These are the words of Jehovah."
It is indeed very Orwellian the World of the Jehovah's Witnesses.

"I am a Governing Body member, and some day in the future I will be speaking inspired words from Jehovah!"
"I love this idea!"

This is an important point so I am going to post it again.
"At that time, the lifesaving direction that we receive from Jehovah’s organization may not appear practical from a human standpoint."
The Watchtower is saying that the instructions they give WILL BE FROM JEHOVAH.
This means that some time in the future The Watchtower words will be inspired words!
i realize some witnesses will say how wonderful it is that the governing body has put into print how their understanding has changed over the years.. the sheep and goats, the faithful and discreet slave, the evil slave class, etc.
are all viewed differently then originally understood.. the sad thing is that if you questioned any current understanding, as explained through the watchtower, or if you disagreed with it, you would be disfellowshipped!.
even if their understanding was totally in error, if anyone ever pointed it out, they were out!.
the Governing Body has put into print how their understanding has changed over the years.
The Governing Body just makes things up as they go along.

Over the years the Watchtower has repeatedly stated it is not divinely inspired.
The Watchtower is claiming in print that suddenly sometime in the future it will be providing Divenly Inspired Information!
Nevermind that it has never happened in the past.
Why do people believe this?

In Schnell's book, "Thirty Years a Watchtower Slave," he recounts a Watchtower director calling for "kadaver gehorsam" from the brothers.
This German phrase means "corpse like obedience".
Schnell mentions that when he heard that type of obedience was called for, that things had gone too far!!
This was over half a century ago!
The Watchtower has not changed in demanding obedience.
these are just some of the things i was told studying with the witnesses in 1959 .in 1960 we got married in one of the few kh`s that existed in melb.at the time .and we were required to pay/contribute to the bro.who conducted the service.. i was led to beleive in my studys that smoking was a no,no ,so i gave up ,learning later that wasnt the case ,the ministerial servant book study conductor in our group still did smoke.
( the ban on smoking didnt come in till later on ).
while they may not have passed the collection plate around , they did on a regular time frame appeal for donations from the platform for funds to offset the renting of a hall , my first congregation , or the upkeep /maintenance of a kh or for the"world wide work of witnessing" .
"jehovah witnesses have no clergy"
Definition: Clergy, a group ordained to perform pastoral or sacerdotal functions in a Christian church.
(Note. Some sacerdotal synonyms are priestly, clerical, and ministerial.)
Who is assigned, or ordained, to perform pastoral and ministerial functions in the congregation?
The Elders!
Then the JWs say, "Well, we have no paid clergy"
But, the Circuit Overseers are paid (not much) by The Watchtower, and they are ordained to perform pastoral and ministerial functions.
So the JW will say, "Our elders don't wear clerical collars, so we don't have a clergy class!"
You can't win.
here's what i scavenged from the most notable watchtower i've ever read.
it may be far more significant than many people realise!.
and before anyone whinges that one or two are 'old light', the fact remains that all of them are rejecting what was once 'inspired truth' from the revered fds, and disagreeing with any one of these (now current) falsehoods would have resulted in your "stoning to death" and shunning by all whom you loved.
An elder once said that Russell's pyramid was built by "The Evil Slave"
There is no "Evil Slave" now, so who built this pyramid monument to Charles T. Russell?
bbc news - us judge changes baby's name from messiah to martin.
what right does this judge have to change a babies name?
jerk.
"A judge in Tennessee changed a 7-month-old boy's name to Martin from Messiah, saying the religious name was earned by one person and "that one person is Jesus Christ."
"The word Messiah is a title and it's a title that has only been earned by one person and that one person is Jesus Christ," the judge said.
Messiah also happens to be the name of the author of a well-known book on Quantum Mechanics.
