Five Meetings and David's Five Stones (and other goofy things)...
by Confucious ini don't think this was ever written in a wt, but i've heard it more than once as a comment.
that when david reached into his bag to sling a stone at goliath - that he had five stones to choose from.
and the comment was... .

That when David reached into his bag to sling a stone at Goliath - that he had five stones to choose from.
"And just like us, we have five meetings a week. And like David, we never know which 'stone' we will need to ward off 'Goliath.'"This is a good example of how many JWs reason. It might be called "reasoning through parallels and illustrations," the non sequitur conclusions are often humorous.

Philosophy: Satan's tool?
by M.J. ini have heard much railing from the wts about the snares of "worldly philosophies".
according to the wts, much of what is evil in the world, including the teachings of "babylon the great" is rooted in philosophy.
this appears to be one of their hotbutton "buzzwords" to promote irrational fear about anything related to philosophy.

Did a search for the CoC chapters online. They are not to be found!
It was over a year ago I saw them. They must have been removed....Sorry.

I found CoC online once, but it was an older edition. Each chapter was a separate pdf file.

Criticisms of Pastor Russell

problems after problems prevented it from going forward.
in the meanwhile there have been a few pastor russell's biographies in the works, some by bible students others by outsiders.

RR,
There was a bioigraphy entitled "Charles Taze Russell, Early American Zionist." I have not seen a copy of it however.
You might also add to the list
* Strange medical cures/statements - grape cure, cancer cure, appendcitis due to biting worms, etc
Although I believe Russell was trying to help by printing these things. He was a good businessman, but did not know anything about medicine.
* Phrenology, that the shape of the bumps on one's head determines one's personality/abilities, etc.
* fascination with occult topics, such as pyramid prophecies, wing-sun globe symbols
* ready to believe crackpot ideas about astronomy, such as the Isaac Newton Vail Annular Ring theory for the source of the Flood waters. (again, show CTR had no basic education in many subjects, other than business and accounting perhaps) (Isaac Vail is another example of a man who fell in love with his own ideas.)
* Did not think it was necessary to know original Biblical languages such as Greek or Hebrew. Thought if you had enough translations of the Bible it was enough. (His lack of knowing even the complete Greek alphabet was demonstrated in a court of law once, after that CTR did not take the stand anymore as far as I know)
and there are probably a lot more that could be added to the list.

Hi Athanasius,
Thank you for answering my question, as to where the Covington quote appeared (Leonard Chretien's book, "Witnesses of Jehovah"), and who is writing the Rutherford biography (You!).
Probably the interest in Rutherford's affairs has more to do with it being known by his associates, but overlooked and ignored. The Judge and the Jehovah's WItnesses at that time were so closely identified that any serious scandel concerning Rutherford could probably have ended the religion. Even now the Watchtower praises Rutherford for his qualities, and even says he is a good example for elders and circuit servants to follow! (ugh!)
Information about Rutherford's political career is scarce, about the only thing I heard is that he briefly campaigned for William Jennings Bryan when Bryan ran for President. (from the "Visions of Glory" book by Barbara Harrison).
I look forward very much to when your Rutherford biography will be published, and hope it will be soon. I will be one of the first to purchase a copy!
best regards,
