Carvel, the Christmas Cat

It is marvelous. Caution: the prologue is very hard to read, particularily if animal abuse is anywhere in your background. But it sets up the story.

Takes place in 1962 (when a lot of us were teens). The interaction between teens, siblings, parents, is great. The book isn't long and can be read in one long evening.

It's been a while since I've read something that made me cry, then later chuckle, then stupidly sit there laughing all by myself.

Most likely, not suitable for preteens - wouldn't understand teenagers & perhaps too graphic about the abused kitten lost, found & loved.

Highly recommend it & the book is a keeper!

blueblades posted the 2003 service year report.

the watchtower society makes it appear that they grew 2.2% (which is lower than some of their earlier percentages) ... but the way they present the data, does not reveal the truth.

The psychologist used by the WTBTS said one reason that the WTBTS wasn't a negative influence on their adherents is because almost as many of them that come in the front door....leave out of the back door. Therefore, the back door must swing open easily. Therefore, the experience really couldn't hurt those leaving that much.

Much like the Moonies experience - according to this man. We had a long thread about him - as the WTBTS used him as their authority.

He said that any religion which could be left so easily with such a large population coming & leaving certainly wasn't a cult - and all those jw apostates are just full of it. (my words - his thoughts)

Of course, he didn't go into the personal aspect of the person leaving.....just percentages.

im am a 19 year old male who is thinking of leaving christianity for another religion.

i am looking at jw first and before i really start studying it i want to know how the religion works on homosexuality because i have a boyfriend and dont want to leave him.and would i be able to go date and have sex with someone not in the religion.. thank you .

The frequent denunciations the WTS directs at homosexuals is especially outrageous considering how they KNOW that there are thousands of celibate homosexuals within their ranks suffering in silence under the guilt and burdens heaped upon them. - enishi

Perhaps a cruel, planned, oxymoron? Keep denouncing disgusting *active* homosexuals so that those could-be-at-any-moment-disgusting, *inactive* homosexuals won't forget.....and the jw's who know they're gay won't forget either? Perhaps a way to try & filter out the homosexuals amongst them - "get out if you can't take the heat?" If one looks at the training the WTBTS delivers to all it's followers (df, da, shunning, discipline, God's killing sprees, "the backroom" elders---- it's ALL NEGATIVE REINFORCEMENT. It works - but it's cruel. Like some parents of old who knew of no better way than to beat their children. However, the WTBTS knows of positive reinforment.....they just refuse to use it. The WTBTS really believes they have the God-given right to beat their slaves....no "fellow" about it - headquarters ain't no slave class. That is, those who believe in God. The others think it's a corporation with odd freebies doing the work for them. My opinion, naturally.

now, please remember, jw my entire life.

therefore, many prejudiced and warped ideas.. the deal is that a very nice co-worker invited me to a 'christmas play' at her baptist church and i accepted.

the play is tonight, and i have all these messed-up ideas that perhaps it's wrong to step foot into another church; or that perhaps since i've been taught all my life that demons reside in the false religion churches that i'll be bothered by these demons if i attend this event tonight.. please, help me win over these live-long thoughts.

Wellllllllllllllllllllll., has anybody heard from the fearing-demon jw-on-the-way-out?

The Stanley Theater (renovated by the NY WTBTS and a beauty) has an amazing image of the Egyptian Rah Sungod all across the top front of the building - original to architecture.

In Indpls, IN, the local JW's bought a large Baptist Temple and renovated it to a turn-of-the-century beauty & used it as a JW convention center.....steeple still standing proudly.

If the demons are in these buildings, they'd still be there when the jw's bought them. Somehow, that doesn't bother jw's at all. Perhaps because it has to do with money?

But a poor local jw - but those damned kids' shoes at a garage sale.....and just don't ya know the demons come out at night thru those shoes.

But they also believe that gay men and woman can be happy without engaging in homosexual acts.

Is that in print somewhere? I completely missed that new light, if it is. I always thought that their stance was that since homosexuality is condemned in the Bible it is wrong. No if, ands or buts. Prayer and study would "cure" them of these "wrong" desires. In time they would overcome the feelings and become acceptable in the eyes of God.
If man is not to even look at a woman so as to have a passion for her without it being adultery in the heart, how can a gay person be non-gay or even happy by just not "engaging in homosexual acts"? I think you've got the WTS' policy confused with the U.S. military's: Don't ask, don't tell.

That's been the JW teaching since at least the late 70's. A person can be a homosexual and be in the organization - as long as he/she doesn't act upon those urges in any unclean way. Thus, no holding hands with someone of the same sex either. Nada, nothing. It would be up to the homosexual to police his/her own thoughts and "get them under control" thru prayer & works befitting repentence (going out in service). And it wouldn't hurt to marry someone of the opposite sex either. Afterall, the poor smuck might not even realize it until after marriage vows. Rather like the Kings of old marrying....just so they could have the mate & label. One gay guy I knew had been df'd 3 times for gay sex....and came back each time. A lot of brothers didn't even know he was gay - but a lot of sisters did, and didn't care. He was a nice guy. This was in the 70's.

Very true statement, Wilton, and you haven't even got to know JW's yet. In the sense that other religions use the term "Christianity" - you're right. JW's aren't Christians. They are worshippers of a violent God who will kill all who do not worship him as Jehovah's Witnesses preach.....and according to Jehovah's Witnesses - they are the ONLY people in the world who will not be killed by God at Armageddon. Oh, and the severely mentally ill and/or challenged people. But if those people are children, and their parents are jw's who God doesn't approve of (and he won't tell us which ones) - well, those children will be killed by God also, because God didn't approve of their parents.

In other words - Jehovah's Witnesses' teachings suck. And that's just one example.

And we haven't even gotten into homophobia yet. A large percentage of my family is gay, (most aren't jw's). At a convention one time, a man was giving an experience about talking with a gay who believed in the Bible - and that God loves gays too. There was a strategically placed paused at the end of that sentence.....so that the audience would be given time to laugh at that stupid gay man.

And the 2,000 Jehovah's Witnesses in attendance did laugh at that gay man....they firmly believe God will kill him and his partner. A laughable killing matter in their viewpoint.

I'm being blunt because it crushed me. Been a jw woman for 30 yrs. Hard enough to try and believe God would kill my wonderful gay son.....but for my brothers and sisters to laugh about it was just too much. We went & talked to CO who conducted that meeting part about the prepared time for laughter at gays' imminent death (killed by God)...and subsequent laughter.

Btw, CO has a psychology BS degree (I knew him). He shrugged and said "You can't change human nature."

In JW's, a CO (Circuit Overseer) is like a Cardinal in the Catholic Church. Has quite a bit more power and knowledge than local JW's - and tells them pretty much what to do.

Don't join. You will be sorry & pay a heavy price to give away your freedom - and made to feel dirty, obscene, and a sexual queerness to be "hated....in a Godly hate way." And that is a type of quote often repeated by JW's.

Don't know a thing about the Caspian, Caspian's Sister, Jemima affairs.

But I was married 12 years to a man who found it much easier to lie than to tell the truth. It was rather a sick compulsion (along with drugs, etc) with him. He lost all *average* friends, made enemies of them. Took their money, .........he was an asshole - and rectal cancer would be too good for him too.

And he's still alive. He was a good liar for a long time, though. He could actually make many of us believe that the sky was grey when we knew we were seeing blue. After many years, however, all who knew him came to accept whatever he said as a lie. It became easier for him to lie than to tell the truth.

People like my first husband dwell in their lies. It's so much nicer than their reality.

when i read the title of the thread ?was your growth stunted because you were a jehovah?s witness?, i posted a version of the following while extremely emotional.

Nice to meet you. Fascinating, disturbing, account. Analogy? Not good on English terms.....but insightful writing.

I wasn't raised a jw....but many parents have ropes. Different ropes for different folks, eh? (pun intended).

But some ropes hurt more than others - and take different ways to get over, or learn to move around their effects.

As brought out, counseling with a therapist who's very familiar with cults will help. So much to read, take in - and it helps so much in understanding.

This forum (and other xjw forums) helps tremendously for people who really understand. We might not get along with one another on other levels, but we understand the jw experience.

Vent away, undercover........a necessity when trying to apply logic to WT law.

Whole Blood is not to be stored; it is to be poured out?returned to God, as it were. Granted, the Mosaic Law is not in force now. Nevertheless, Jehovah?s Witnesses respect the principles God included in it, and they are determined to ?abstain from whole blood & major fractions thereof.? Hence, we do not donate blood, nor do we store for transfusion our blood that should be ?poured out.? That practice conflicts with God?s law. However, we can accept blood fractions (but still not donate) which The Faithful & Discreet Slave Class have deemed spiritually safe for us. We know these blood fractions are indeed stored blood, but not whole blood. Only whole blood was to be poured out, not fractions.
