any suggestions for my "family problems"
by 1m2y3j init is very hard to condense 30 yrs of "in-law abuse" into a sentence or two, but hopefully some of you can relate and if you have found a way to cope/deal with it i'm all ears.
basically, my spouse and i have stayed together for 30-plus yrs because of being witnesses, despite extreme differences of values and goals.
half-way thru the lives of our children we both discovered the fallacies of wts and thankfully left this simultaneously.

This is something I have done repeatedly over the years, but he makes excuses for his family and says it will just take time for his them to accept me.
This is telling. The fact that you've been with your spouse 30 years and YOU need to give THEM time? How much time? Couple hundred years?
The situation is only slightly dissimilar to my own. There are times when you tough things out for the good of people you love. Sometimes, it's not a sign of weakness but of strength to defer your own happiness if your children need you. I had to postpone my separation one year and live with a man I could not stand because my daughter got engaged and I could not drop "the bomb" on her during the happiest time of her life. So I endured another year after 25 crappy ones. A small price to pay and she's grateful to this day.
However....if your children know you are unhappy and will not be personally affected by the divorce, you may need to show them the consequences of not working on a relationship. If your spouse is too much of a woos to stand up to an abusive family, demonstrate that it is NOT OK to disrespect you by inaction.
Thirty years is a long time. Is there any part of this relationship you want to preserve? Would it be worth the effort to seek counselling or move away from the offensive relatives? Do you love this person and want to grow old together? What is your financial situation and how would you fare with one income?
These are important questions that only you can answer. We all have had our own experiences and baggage. We're here to listen, but truly, this has to be your decision. I suspect you already know in your heart what you want and have come here to reinforce that decision.
Kindest regards,
Wasasister
edited to add: sorry FedUp, but I don't think screaming is ever a good idea, whether you are posting on a discussion board or speaking to others. If you can't get your point across by using calm words, you may not have much of a point to start with.
edited a second time: I realized I made an assumption you are female, when you carefully avoided any reference to gender in your initial post. Sorry.

Just As A Matter Of Curiosity..........
by hillary_step injust as a matter of curiosity i was wondering if any of you know of anybody who has read raymond franz' 'crisis of conscience' and who actually remained a jw?
i have sent and lent this book to a number of people within the wts, even a co, all of whom left eventually.
one person remained due to domestic issues, but resigned from all his duties and remains as such.

HS, interesting comment. You were "horrified" by this account in the late 70's, yet remained a Witness in good standing until much later. (Please correct me if I misunderstood your situation.)
What made you ignore your personal radar and keep up the act for another few decades?
Wasa/ guilty of the same thing

For a JW to even be open to reading CoC would be indicative of a questioning attitude (at least about some things). I think that CoC is, for many people, not the atom bomb that comes out of nowhere, but the straw that breaks the camel's back.
Methinks the youngster has a valid point here. This "test" may be skewed by the fact that a JW who touches this demonized book has already begun the descent into questioning, thus they are not pure to start with.
From my personal experience, I was disillusioned, wanting out of a bad marriage, and looking for any excuse to leave. I would never have found the information I needed, if not for the internet which became easily available to me in 1996. I found Randy's "Bethel Chronicles" and recognized his story from the same account as told to me by a CO I was close to. The story was identical, only the bad-guys had changed. It all suddenly made perfect sense.
After that, I read COC, but the tapestry of my belief system had already begun to unravel. I don't think one book can change your life (despite what the author of "Purpose Driven Life" would like to think), but Ray's account certainly poured gasoline on my spark.

but religion aside,
That's just it. To a "real" Jehovah's Witness, their religion will never be "aside".
I'm sorry to be so blunt, but both of you stand to get hurt. She'll probably suffer more than you...just the way thest things work out.
Edited to add:
A few more things not mentioned in previous posts...If your girlfriend and her parents really believe the JW religion, they want to save your life and the only way your life can be saved is by converting. Otherwise, you will die at Armageddon and your wife will be left a widow. Ask her or her parents if this is true.
Be honest with her. Tell her in no uncertain terms that you never EVER intend on becoming one of Jehovah's Witnesses and ask her if that is OK with her.
If she stays in the religion, it will be the basis for all other decisions made in your life - who your friends will be, what movies you will watch, how many children you will have, where you live, and what car you drive.
If she leaves the religion, she may well resent you for taking her away from her family and friends. Relationships based on "I can change her/him" almost never work. The one who changes eventually hates the one who changes them, even if the changes are for their own good.

I went to see "Saved" tonight and could not get in (technical glitch with the print my local theater received.) So, I bought a ticket for Stepford instead.
I was a big fan of the original and really liked this version. Roger Ebert said it was like seeing a new production of a favorite play - since you know the plot already, you go to see the acting and production values. They focused more on the comedy and less on the horror aspects of the story which I enjoyed.
Bette Middler stole the movie from my perspective. Deffinitely worth a watch.

Thanks for adding to the "shame list". This could be a fun thread all on its own.
I really miss Mystery Science Theater 300. Hands down, the best way to enjoy a bad movie.

JWD ....the opium of the Ex ?
by ScoobySnax inmarx reckoned religion was the opium of the people, i'm no marx, but i reckon jwd has become the opium of the exjws.
it satisfies a need, gives one a purpose, feels someone with a greater sense of purpose, trys to give one a purpose and reason for being here, and very closely becomes a "religion" of sorts to many.
many here claim they stay to help others out of the wbts, where in fact i think they stay because it has become their new "opium" its a focal point they can meet with like minded individuals to further their own new "belief".

Sincere question: Is "rediculous" an alternate spelling in Europe? I keep seeing the word spelled that way by Simon and wondered if it was like "theatre" or "colour".

Ummmm....why?
My life got measurably better when I stopped sitting in a windowless room three days a week. Why, oh why would I go back?
To prove what to who, now (in my best Homer Simpson voice)??
