i find it extremely amusing how each year is passing without armageddon.
"for the year 2000, i visualize a world transformed into a beautiful paradise!
but i don't think that either the present world or its rulers will live to see that day.. we are living in the last days of the system of things.
Well, *I'm* living in a 'new system', anyway.
And, yeah, it really is a lot better....
i'm thinking of getting a mod chip for my xbox now that there are solderless ones coming out - i can cope with taking apart a pc like device but i'm better at the 'theoretical' side of electronics when it comes to soldering.. anyone tried them?.
i was thinking of fitting a 120gb drive (or similar) to load games on so the kids can just switch on and go.
obviously, i have no intention of renting games from blockbuster or using my dvd writer in anyway .
And
I was all about to post 'Hey, better watch what you post - Simon will lock thread + ban you'
Then - I saw WHO WROTE THE THREAD!
GAH!
*That's* not legal!!!
what a difference a century makes, is it possible???
the year is 1902 ... one hundred years ago ... .
what a difference a century makes!
Yeah, it's a good thing the world is so much worse off after 1914.
I mean, the increase in bathtubs alone! Monstrous! Obviously the work of satan himself!!
And, what's with this tenfold increase in literacy? Barbaric demonism at work, surely!!

the feb. 15, 2003 wt.
has an article entitled, life in a refugee camp.
the whole article praises the unhcr, which is the united nations high commissioner of refugees.
Oy, be very interested to see how this one pans out.....
It seems very likely we are seeing the setup of a shell corporation requesting NGO member status again....
new manager named rod came in at wal-mart this week monday.
today he got a call from marsh's office building asking for business references and apparently that pissed him off.
i had dropped off a resume at the marsh office building around 1 1/2 weeks ago or so... he called me into his office via one of the customer service manager (csm) who asked me to follow her.
Yeah, if you can prove they didn't hire you because of something he said, you can SUE THEIR (Wal-Marts) ASSES OFF.
That's why companies like The Limited won't give references. When my wife was managing, if someone called in asking for a reference for a former employee, al they were allowed to say was 'yes, they worked here' or 'no, they did not'. Such restriction was exactly for that reason - if someone slanders you when called for a reference, you can sue off THEIR asses, and the asses of the company they were speaking in behalf off.
Wal-mart does have very deep pockets, and they know full well cases like this have been lost a lot. They'll probably just settle, but I'm sure the amount they would offer would compensate you quite well.
Trick is, you gotta make sure that's why the companies didn't hire you. Call a lawyer, ask them how to proceed. Your boss sounds like the kind of jerk that would do something that would get him in DEEP legal trouble (he already has, but it's a much harder case to make - the bad reference thing is open and shut, though).

north korea has said that this standoff with the us could lead to world war iii.
scary words, huh?.
I'm amazed the nuclear non-proliferation treaty has lasted as long as it has. Fascinating move on the part of the US 'Okay, we've developed nukes now, so, let's everybody agree to stop our research wherever it is now'.
I'm amazed anyone agreed to it in the first place.
Yes, I agree it's bad the N.K. will have nukes. But, Israel has them? France does? UK does? US does? So does China, Russia, etc, etc.
Why do we get to protect our national sovereignty using nuclear weapons if needed, but N.K. isn't allowed to? Is this not hypocritical?
when i was a kid, adults used to bore me to tears with their tedious diatribes about how hard things were when they were growing up; what with walking twenty-five miles to school every morning uphill both ways through year 'round blizzards carrying their younger siblings on their backs to their one-room schoolhouse where they maintained a straight-a average despite their full-time after-school job at the local textile mill where they worked for 35 cents an hour just to help keep their family from starving to death!
and i remember promising myself that when i grew up there was no way in hell i was going to lay that garbage on kids about how hard i had it and how easy they've got it!
now that i've reached the ripe old age of forty, i can't help but look around and notice.
However, I shall try....
In defense of the kids growing up 21st century....
Yes, sure, they have the internet you didn't. Imagine that - the government didn't just KNOW what your interests were, they had to have someone follow you around if they wanted to spy on you.
And no email! Gods forbid! Spammers actually had to pay REAL MONEY to send you junk mail! They couldn't send tons simply for free!! Shocking!
And, c'mon, you're telling me that not having to worry about AIDS was a serious problem? I mean, sure you could still catch something from someone by sleeping around a lot. But, it wouldn't KILL you. Hedonism has really taken a dive in the 21st century, I tell ya.....
And yeah, the big mean Soviets were everyone's worst nightmare. Except the people who educated themselves and realized they were just another 1st world nation with different world views. How many times did Soviets destroy US buildings? How many times have terrorists killed dozens, hundreds, or thousands of US citizens, ON US SOIL, in the past few years alone? I'm sorry, but an imagined threat of war does not compare to having to live in the shadow of what was once the World Trade Center, or a Federal building in Oklahoma City.
Kids today aren't worried about a war that might someday, MAYBE be carried to American soil. They are living with one being fought around them as they try to grow up.

Hrm....well, my instinct is to argue your points, but my position is weak. After all, given a choice, I really WOULDN'T want to live in any era of human history other than the present. So, I guess it can't be THAT bad.
All I can really offer is that I'm sure I'll be saying the exact same thing about the generation following me and noting how much easier THEY have it than even *I* did. And think how that will then compare to you old farts!
yep, new campaign ad's on tv basically links the owning of an suv to the need for lots of gas, to that money going to countries that supply that gas, to the terrorists who get funding from those same countries.. so, based on this - what kind of car do you drive?
do you think that we american's have a moral or ethical responsibility to self-reduce our need for oil, and reduce just in general all the "materialistic" things in life to which we feel entitled?.
i drive a geo prizm - 35 mpg - because of our environment (and plus i'm just a cheap ass!
Do you really believe that if we stopped "interfering" in the region that Saddam would suddenly become a different person? The guy is whacked !! And he'll continue to believe what he does about himself and what he can do whether the US "interferes" or not. Would he suddenly stop oppressing his own people if "WE" do something differently? I think not.
Yes, and we'd then care because....why?
I was just saying, if we stopped interfering, his lunacy would not be directed at us, hence, no longer our problem. We are not the world's policemen, nor should be.
I may sympathize with those of his own people he'd oppress, but I don't see this as anyone else's problem - AS LONG AS IT DOESN'T SPREAD. In a hypothetical situation in which there is no money in the middle east, they could buy no weapons, and the problem would NOT spread.
Dictatorships only exist as long as the flow of money in a region is easy to control. If Iraq lost the 'easy out' of oil, they'd have to initiate significant agricultural reform, build factories to actually produce GOODS instead of simply exporting oil, educate their population better, etc. - they'd need to diversify their source of income or collapse into third world poverty. Once that happens.....
There are no, nor have ever been, any industrial nations that have been able to maintain a dictatorship for more than a century, tops. Even the mighty Soviet Union only managed 80 years. There is a reason for that....
If you could FORCE Iraq/Iran/Saudi Arabia/etc to industrialize instead of simply taking money for outsiders drilling holes in their land....
