So why DID they join the UN??

kind of wondering.. obviously, i'm aware of the society's hypocrasy re: the un.

i've been talking about it with family members, and finally one threw out a question i didn't know offhand.. if the library card excuse is false (i am pretty sure it is), then why did they join?.

considering their public position on the un, it would only be a matter of time after joining that the details would come back to haunt them, so why risk it?.

I agree Liberty, you miss the point though.

I guess it goes back to another post someone made about the typical j-dub reaction to the news.

Runs like this:

1) It was faked, the WTBTS would never do that
2) Well, there must be a good reason, I'll wait for the WTBTS to tell me what it was

To even get by #1 (IE., convince them it wasn't faked, that the WTBTS *did* apply) you need to provide a reason. Like a murder investigation - it's hard to convict someone of committing a murder if you can't find any motive - anything they'd gain by risking so much.

Obviously, I'm aware of the Society's hypocrasy RE: the UN. I've been talking about it with family members, and finally one threw out a question I didn't know offhand.

What did they get out of UN membership? Do NGO's get any kind of special protection or recognition? It seems odd that France would finally succeed in leveling their tax against non-religious organizations (JWs) only months after the org left the UN. Coincedence?

b)the lies told by the wtbts to the court in the case of jehovah's witnesses v bulgaria in the european court of human rights.

APOSTATES MADE UP THE SITE AND PUT WT ON THE SITE

I love this one. And you know the borg has been conditioning its members for this - we had received talk after talk about how dangerous the internet is, and how useless the information on it is. Apostates have saturated it, blahblahblah. When my dad was studying, he was actually counselled once for using information he found on the web in a comment (in complete harmony with what the book we were studying said, but it was from THE NET!!!)

Funny, too. When I told my wife about it, her first reaction was #1 - 'Oh, it was faked'. Nope, sorry, wasn't. Society even admits it. 'Oh, well, there must have been a good reason'. Nope, sorry, wasn't. Library card excuse was false, etc. Of course, she was on the edge enough to go from that point to crying about being lied to.

But, I doubt most j-dubs would make that step. Or the next one, either (getting over it).

Carbon dating isn't reliable?

i was talking to a relative the other night who told me that pbs had a program on tv some weeks back, and they interviewed many reputable scientist who said that carbon dating doesn't work.

has anybody heard about this?

Further, as to 'contamination'. Yes, it is possible. But, keep in mind, scientists are measuring how long it has been since carbon-14 was added to the skeleton (typically when the being died). If, say, rats or worms were gnawing on it 50,000 years later and left enough C-14 to cause problems, the remains would be 'contaminated'.

But, here is the rub - C-14 contamination will ALWAYS make something look YOUNGER than it is. Say a man died 10,000 years ago. 2,000 after his death, his skeleton is 'contaminated'. Now, a modern scientist doing C-14 dating on ONLY the contaminated part would think he died 8,000 years ago.

See the YEC problem? If C-14 dating indicates living organisms existed on Earth 40,000 ago, that means AT LEAST 40,000 ago - maybe longer. CERTAINLY not LESS.

IIRC, carbon-14 is a radioactive element that pretty much saturates our environment. Living things breath it in (or eat it? Don't recall), and it becomes part of our bodies (bone structure, etc.) When you die, carbon-14 stops being added to your bones.

Since it is a radioactive element, we know exactly the rate at which it decays ('radioactive' by definition means an element that is unstable - it will eventually break down into other stable elements, such as lead, and the rate of 'decay' is constant). The trick then, is to get enough of a sample from skeletal remains to find out how far decayed the carbon-14 is. Once you know how far it has decayed, and you know the rate of decay, you know when the living thing died.

Kind of a simplified explanation, but there you go.

mine is the story of a lady who was witnessing alone in an apartment building, and aparently she knocked on the door of some rapists/murderers/drug dealers......whatever......she was "saved" by two angels, only visible to the attackers, that accompanied her on that visit.

or how about the one where a householder had his finger on the trigger of a gun and was just about to pull it when.....all of a sudden....out of nowhere (drumroll please) a witness knocked on his door and offered him "the promise of everlasting life in the new system of thingstm"!!

Naw, my favorite was the thief that broke into a sister's house. She came in, and the quick thinker he was, he hid under her bed. He was going to murder her in her sleep, but before SHE went to bed, she read a passage from the bible. The thief was so moved, when she fell asleep, he just stole the bible. Years later, they meet at a convention and he confeses this to her.

Makes me smile just thinking of it...

The important thing is not to get hung up on the 'men always thinking about sex' thing.

That DOES NOT mean they are thinking about you as some kind of object. How he treats you as a person is very dependant on him, and every guy varies on that (RE: Mr. Sophisticated vs Mr. Construction). However, that he is thinking about sex at the time is a given.

You have a handsome guy wining & dining you. Whole nine yards, fancy restaurant, no make it a fancy lodge. Fire crackling, plenty of roses. He's just finished reading you poetry and you are casually discussing something, oh, I dunno, relationships.

Do you honestly think he is not thinking about sex?

Or, you are giving a presentation - at work - in front of a half dozen men. You think THEY are not thinking about sex?

I'm not saying you need to be afraid/worried about of men. But, yes, we are almost always thinking about sex. The most 'sophisticated' man you can think of thinks of sex no less than those construction-worker guys. He just hides it better, because that's his style. (Actually, odds even, depending on how conservative a family he came from, he might just be thinking about it MORE)
