I served as an elder for 14 years. I never told a distressed publisher to "pray more" or "read the Bible more". I didn't need to become a liberal Christian to tell them what you told them. I gave them the exact same message you did, as a true believing JW elder.

So sick of the abuse...
by iwasblind ini am still serving as an elder but just hanging in there.
i think their quandry is that they don't see me out in the field, but when they need encouragement and decent prayer they come to me.. i just got off the phone to this poor sister who i have only met twice.
she is not even in my congregation (her sister is).

When I Was School Overseer . . .
by compound complex inwe were instructed not to give public counsel to the students, but to use the two minutes alloted afterwards to supplement, from the aid book, the subject matter presented by the students.
the following information on jehovah's answering of prayer came to mind when replying to another thread moments ago.. doubtless, our viewpoint on this and other scriptural matters has taken on a new direction -- if any at all.
having worked on this bible dictionary while at bethel, i retain a fondness for it.

That's why I wait for my child to scream for an extended period before I go into their room and help them. Just like my god, I want to make sure their need for help is genuine.
Oh, wait, my god already can read my heart and knows my concern, desire, and motive. My bad. I guess the reason he delays taking action is because he's just a prick.

Are Circuit Overseers next?
by Londo111 inlast year saw the elimination of the district overseer...and circuit overseers now must retire at 70. how long until the circuit overseer is no more?
of course, the role might still exist, they would simply not get paid.
they would have to care for their own expenses.

This is a great idea.
I'm a former elder stuck mid-fade due to my believing wife.
I would love to send in a letter to Bethel, perhaps hand written, but still anonymous, telling the governing body that I go door to door once per month and am a complete atheist. Why? Because my mother couldn't be seen with me in public if JWs knew what I believe now.
All these letters getting stamped from various towns across the country would be an awesome "witness" to the pain and suffering put upon people by their policies.
We just need to set a date, and get it promoted on all the XJW sites. JWN, JWR, Reddit, etc.

That's it! The Jesus stories are most reasonably explained as myth. History makes this obvious.
by Island Man ina careful examination of the historical pagan religious context existing at the time of the genesis of christianity leads any reasonable person to conclude that jesus is just another one of several similar myths.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kn7teoa9ark.

Can anyone of you prove that the bird on Perry's shoulder is not Jesus?
Case closed, Perry's shoulder bird for the win.

Need Help with Blood Transfusion Illustration
by Dissonant15 inplease, who can provide an intelligent rebuttal to the following illustration?
i always thought it was bullet-proof:.
"if your doctor directs you to 'abstain from alcohol' would you be ok to have it injected into your veins rather than drink it?
-
OneGenTwoGroups
If your doctor told you "stay away from alcohol" ...
1. Would you symbolically drink it once per year?
2. Would you allow alcohol to be used to sterilize a wound?
3. Would you avoid any life saving medical procedure involving alcohol?
4. Would you spend hours upon end rationalizing a possibility to consume fractions of alcohol?

CO layoff buzz. Anyone heard anything?
by freemindfade inheard of some co's being "let go".
anyone else heard anything like this in the last few days?
-

I keep expecting the GB to put visit rotations at yearly.
This would eliminate the need for 50 percent of the COs.

Has the Great Witness Trolley/Cart campaign produced ANY results?
by freddo ini live between two cities that are big enough to have their own metropolitan trolley cart arrangements organised at circuit level.
the 3 congregations at the hall i attend have trolley schedule noticeboards.
i see trolleys in the high streets and markets locally.

There was a JW urban legend about Fred Franz getting a mention on Jeopardy when I was a kid. Something about him speaking 10 languages.
Yep, I swam through crocodiles with John Denver so we could watch Jeopardy together. SMH
