I would definitely agree that some people have "needed" religion in the past in that it was the only way to convince them to turn their lives around and stop destructive behaviors to themselves or others. However, I can't help but feel that this is the right thing done for the wrong reason, and is therefore not something to propagate but something that needs to be corrected much further back in the person's life. If the only reason these individuals have to not act destructively is their faith, then if that reason is removed will they revert to their previous behavior? The reasoning behind the thing being done must be solid and correct if the action or content of the principle is to mean anything. There are so many different things (poverty, racism, bad parenting, etc.) that led up to someone making the decision to act destructively, and adding the band-aid of religion is not a solution, just a treatment of the symptom.

Do You Think Humanity Will Ever Be Completely Free From Religion?
by InjusticeSystem ini realize that many here still have a form of spirituality or faith, and i mean no disrespect to those individuals.
i suppose i am posting this question to those, like myself, who have come to the conclusion that religion in general is a major hindrance to the progress of our species and needs to be put aside so that we can advance to our full potential.
so my question is, do you think this will ever actually happen, and how do you think we can get there?

Cofty - I certainly hope that there are more like yourself.
I would love to live to see the day when the need for religion is gone. I realize there are many factors that would need to change in order to make that happen, but I certainly hope that is what we are evolving toward.

Sofia Lose - What a cruel joke that would be, you may agree. Although its true in my experience that type of devotion does need to be replaced by something, hopefully something much more moderate and constructive.
Talesin - You and me both.

Ivanatahan - this has become one of my worst fears as of late (as I watch my mother slip back into the Borg after being inactive for several years), that we will never be able to fully rid ourselves of the fear and ignorance that make some continue to cling to religions like the Society.
Freemindfade - i agree 100%, it seems that until we can replace that ignorance with the actual truth about the history of ourselves and our world and universe, religion is here to stay. A sad prospect since so many are so very unwilling to learn those truths (evolution, etc.).

why did man go from living 900 years to 90?
by sowhatnow ini cant recall the scripture, where it says than only a few men will he live to be 80 years or so, can anyone recall that?.
so then im wondering, if it is a fact that men lived long years 900 in some cases, for what reason would god limit our lifespan if our time is so short compared to his?.
how on earth does man go from living 8 and 9 hundred years down to 80 to 100 ?.

As Onager said above, the Sumerians started the tradition of attributing extreme longevity to their rulers which took a sharp decline after the Sumerian rendition of the flood (as it did after the biblical flood), and then further declined through the years to standard ages. I would assume that they did this in order to emphasize that their line of kingship descended directly from heaven and the gods themselves, therefore solidifying their power and divine right to rule. These long lives all the way back to the very creation of the chosen people (insert the nationality of the individual telling the story here) serve the same purpose in the biblical accounts. The Society has attempted to deal with this via the "Vapor Canopy" idea (there are other excellent threads here on this subject, definitely worth the read) that supposedly shielded humanity from the harmful cosmic radiation therefore increasing longevity and also fatally skewing all attempts at radiocarbon dating methods therefore neatly killing two nasty problems with one very hollow stone. Dr. Irving Finkel (curator in charge of cuneiform inscriptions on tablets of clay from ancient Mesopotamia at the British Museum), in his book The Ark Before Noah, handles the flood, extreme longevity, and the captivity in Babylon in detail and provides a very good comparison between the Sumerian/Akkadian myths and the Biblical narratives, and it is very clear by the end of the reading that the biblical tall tales are re-worked versions of these older myths. -

Awake January 2015: How did life begin? - More misquotes
by Designer Stubble in[quote]some might assume that a scientifically-minded person would pick evolution and that a religious person would pick creation.

They have removed the quote from the online version, but it remains in the full version that you can download. The new online version is as follows:
"The fact is, many educated people—including a number of scientists—question the validity of the theory."
That's it. I have not found any printed apology or retraction. Please post if anyone has.

JWs as described by Cracked
by Vidiot inhttp://www.cracked.com/blog/4-religions-youve-got-all-wrong-because-hollywood/.
the article describes four different religions (rastafari, jws, amish, and scientology); jws are #3.. the jw entry is pretty accurate (and as usual, funny), but surprisingly doesn't mention the two-witness-rule-related legal troubles the wt has been having lately.

I read this article this AM and thought it was great (other than the glaring 144,000 error of course), but now it is no longer on the site and a google search for the article just takes you to the Cracked homepage. Revision (hopefully)?

It would be great if this would provoke a response and bring this into the view of the rank and file. -

Does anyone know if the WBTS has taken any action or acknowledged the letter or the misquote at this point? I'm very interested to see if there will be a response of any kind or if they will simply ignore it. Also, on a broader note, does anyone know if the Society has EVER printed a retraction or a public apology in line with this type of situation?
