  I think that Farkel's point is valid. People believe in crap because they WANT to believe in crap. I mean, there are still people who claim to be "samaritans" living in Palestine! Still practicing what is left of their millennia old religion - and they are dying off.

  I really can't see another Rutherford, though - there just isn't anyone that charismatic in the organization! They've all been disfellowshipped or have sought better opportunities.

  The status quo will continue - mediocre growth in developed lands, even declines, and continued growth in the Third World, because they really don't have anything else going on.

  Birthdays - I may need some input

  we had a birthday "party" for my daughter at a local restaurant today, with a group of her friends invited.

  we are "inactive" but i still attend some meetings.

  i do not comment or want any 'privilages'.. anyway, one person whom my daughter invited is a jw, though she has said that she may want to get out soon.

  What should we reply when invited to memorial?

  when my mil invites my husband to the memorial he plans on saying, "well i've already been to the memorial before.

  if you've been there once, there's no need to go again since the talk is the same mumbo-jumbo year after year and i'm not anointed anyway.".

  Hm. It'll be the first memorial I've ever missed in a quarter of a century...

  How about "I'd rather spend eternity wearing button-down plaid shirts and raking leaves while hugging koala bears." Oh wait, that's our fate if we DO go...

  Will It Be Cold Turkey For England?

  i don't think so, but the turks aren't known for being nice.. despite a barrage of criticism from the media, england are odds on favourites to win their next euro 2004 qualifying match against turkey at the sunderland stadium of light.

  the visitors have won their opening three group games and anything other than a defeat would put them in a very strong position.

  the hosts are currently at around evens to win group 7.. .

  Wales was suppressed by Edward I (you may remember him from Braveheart). He was a ruthless, double-crossing sonofa$$$ who knew exactly what to do to conquer his island - pure Plantagenet! He was called the "Hammer of the Scots" for his brutal and efffective repression of their traditional rebelliousness...

  I'm of Scottish descent myself, and I have to give credit where credit is due. When it comes to being a ruthless autocrat, nobody can beat the Plantagenets.

  Would you work in Iraq?

  if and when this american offensive is over with, would you go into iraq to help rebuild its economy?

  if an opportunity presented itself now for you to go into a war-ravaged country to reestablish power, telecommunications, or refineries, etc.

  and the pay was well beyond anything you could make in your home country, minus the taxes, would you do it?

  It's stupid. No, the site should not have been hacked - and while the Al-Jazeera network does slant against the US, they are the best crop of budding Arab journalism - not great, but getting there. and they are a comforting indicator of the West's growing influence in how the Arabs view the world. The whole concept of journalism is a Western idea - and from what I've read some of the guys at Al-Jazeera are trying to do it right.
