i got to thinking about the wt study this week (i read blondie's version of it) and the statement that jehovah's witnesses are the happiest people on earth.. there are 2 groups of people in the jw faith and in any other for that matter, those who were born and raised who know no other religion, and those who were converted.. it's somewhat understood, by most, that jw's target those who are emotionally and spiritually vulnerable to convert, therefore they are unhappy.. those who were raised as jw's are told and given repeated examples of how everyone else is unhappy.
when they hear these examples where unhappy people add the jw faith into the mix and suddenly they are transformed into the happiest people on earth, they become convinced that everyone not a jw is like that.. the constant reminders that jw's are the happiest people on earth, for the convert trigger the memory of their poor emotional or spiritual state prior to entering the jw faith, and for the lifetime jw trigger the memory of the previously poor state of the convert.. additional thoughts anyone?.

I think you are right. Jw's really aren't allowed to really feel unhappy. It's a kind of let-down to the group to admit that the "spiritual feeding" program is actually starving them. that the "spiritual activity" is as meaningless and hypocritical as the very worst of Israelite sacrifices. That "spiritual advancement" is actually an exercise in self-delusion.
The relentless drumbeat for more, more, more of the same, same, same... it nearly killed me. I shudder when I think about how miserable I was on the inside - feelings that I couldn't admit having, opportunities that I couldn't admit had passed me by because of my adherence to the religion. Girls I could have loved, friends I could have had, jobs I could have taken... always, the drum of Armageddon beating in my head.
Thank God for setting me free from them. What utter folly and madness!
JWs suffer from depression, mental illness, stress-related illnesses, and I bet most of them are actually suffering from the strain of maintaining a belief structure that just doesn't work. But all the time, they recall the time when they were allowed to feel honest with themselves, and would admit that their lives were messed up, until the dubs taught them the art of self-deception.
Victims of victims...

todays online edition says the dumbo neighborhood is up in arms over the fact that the watchtower has gotten approval to take acres of prime industrial land (taxfree) and that the watchtower will be offering little back.....the watchtower countered that there will be less crime if they're around and that they will renovate 2 neighborhood parks and install security cameras at york street subway station.
It sounds like something a wrestler would say into the microphone during Wrestle-mania. Like, "I'm a Jehovah's Wrestler, and I'm here to introduce you to the pain of Armageddon! Get ready for a Tuesday night Jehovah take-ovah - where I'll be making return visits all up and down your head; and your momma's too!"

That, and any time a mugger tries to steal from a Bethelite, they get witnessed to - so they run away.
If only religions paid taxes on their lands, then there wouldn't be a sense of the city losing valuable real estate and revenue.

like the quakers and some catholic groups that might oppose the government or be percieved as a threat to the government.
this is according to the aclu.......i wonder if the fbi will spy on the witnesses.
can you imagine what could happen???????????
Given the religious natures of the 9/11 hijackers; it makes sense that the government agencies would keep tabs on what's going on. I mean, that IS what we pay them for. However, despite the surveillance, the groups have been allowed to do as they please when they please. Freedom of religion. Observation is not a restriction.

do you believe the bible is the word of god?
i ask because i believe it's important for searching jws who come here to not only learn if there are christians here but also to hear from them personally what their thoughts on the bible are.
i believe the bible is the word of god, do other chriatians here also believe that?.
No.
It's a metaphor at best. A useful collection of fables, morality plays, and lessons in good behavior. At least, to me.

so what would it take to trun the marines for example from a military cult to a mainstream religion.
but more about the role of any military, which is unquestioning support.
I have to disagree. You may be right about the historical purpose of the military; but in current times there have been notable exceptions to your "rule". The Red Army refused to support the hardline Communist coup that overthrew Gorbachev. The American military takes an oath to defend and uphold the Constitution, not any particular man. And more recently the Ukraine army made it very clear that whatever might be dividing the nation, they would not fire upon their own people.
The military can ideally provide a handy check on the power of any leader or congress - the threat of refusing to obey orders can be a powerful one; the whole system could fly apart if that happened!

The original congreessional army (that fought the british) was nothing like this and if you got fed up you could just take your gun and go home as it was all volunteer (plus you had to bring your own gun and clothes anyway).
This is from your other thread. A) Maybe you should reread history. Washington hanged deserters; although the army was plagued with desertion, if you were caught, you were hanged. Volunteer was just for the initial entry. You couldn't sign up and then quit.
B) It was a revolutionary army - hence the need for weapons. But the Army got shoes from France, right? Cannons, too. I doubt that they brought THOSE from home, but they were instrumental at Yorktown.
C) All a kid has to do to get rid of a modern recruiter is give them a JW speech about how evil it is that war exists and that we should be supporting the modern Kingdom of God.
I would deny that the military is a cult. It has a dangerous job, but so do Alaskan fisheries and coal miners, and nobody says that THEY are cultish.
