Just a few extra comments:
1. The original English edition will almost certainly bring "striking observableness", since this is a direct quote and it comes from Luke 17:20. Thanks Fisherman for pointing that out.
2. The Portuguese translation says "classe de Joao" and, later, "Como grupo...". The Italian edition says "classe di Giovanni" and, later, "Come classe". So, it remains to be seen precisely how they'll word it in the original English.
3. It is very important to note that in the paragraphs preceding the 15, as those who understand a little of Italian can see, they go to great lengths to explain the fact that "generation" used to apply negatively to the wicked mankind; now it applies to the holies. :)
4. Nothing has changed in the WT attitude. They continue to use the old collective "In the past, this magazine...", and then, later, "It was thought...", without specifying WHO thought that. They never cease to use the good ol' wording tricks, do they?
Nick, very good analysis. Thanks.
Eagerly waiting to see the original language used in the English edition.

"How come it is not yet out in the US?"
It's because the foreign language editions are usually released before the English edition. Go figure.
The same happened with the KM that announced that Awake! would be published once a month starting in 2007.Text with translation to English is here: http://www.jehovahs-witness.com/10/147354/1.ashx

I believe it all you have said. But, do you have a copy (scan) of the FEB 2008 WT? Just asking :)
No, the foreign language editions of Watchtower are usually released earlier. That's what happened. Also, the translation is, of course, not official. It's the best I can come up with based on my experience. Soon a scan of the English edition will pop up in this board. If get a scan of the Portuguese edition, it will be posted.

argued against it in detail; against the idea that the anointed can be 'this generation'.
Isn't that amusing?

oompa, I think this is big, not because it changes much for the average JW. It is big because 1) it changes a crucial doctrine just 12 years after a big change in the same doctrine, and 2) it makes something that for more than 70 decades used to apply to the wordly people, now applies to the very JW's cream of the crop.
If that level of bullcrap doesn't make a half-brain JW upset, I don't know what will.

(As apparently nobody got my previous point so far)
Narkissos, you have a good point. I actually made an extreme analogy, but one that shows basically what you said: with some twisting, anything can be made holy or filthy.
It doesn't matter that the "generation" was talked about in a negative light before; now it applies to the all-righteous-super-holies anointed ones.

How many times did you read to the householder the "generation" scripture and said "you see? It is very close now. That's the proof".
I did it so many times. What a fool!

Jourles,
That was my carrot when I was growing up. I do not remember any other incentive during my younger years for looking forward to paradise. It was going to be soon, very soon. That dangling carrot had a few words inscribed on it as well: "Good until the year 2000. It will come without fail."
the same here. You make a very good analysis. And to think that some JWs didn't even notice the change in 1995. Maybe they'll notice it now.
It is also interesting how something applies to Satan and, in the next moment, can easely be changed to apply to Jehovah.

Friends,
I just confirmed the "generation" change from another forum in Portuguese. The following is the text in Portuguese:
And here is the English translation:
Watchtower - February 15 2008 - page 24 paragraph 15:
15 Today, people who don't have the spiritual understanding think that there is nothing of "stunningly observable" as to the signs of Jesus' presence. They reason that all continues as before. (2 Peter 3:4) On the other hand, the faithful brothers of Christ, the present class of John, recognize this sign as if it was a lightning and understand its real meaning. As a group, those anointed comprise the present "generation" of comtemporaries who won't pass away "until all the things come to pass".* This indicates that some of anointed brothers of Christ will still be alive on earth when the foretold great tribulation begins.
footnote:
* Apparently, the period in which "this generation" lives seems to correspond to the period covered by the first vision of the book of Revelation. (Rev. 1:10-3:22) This aspect of the day of the Lord extends from 1914 until when the last of the faithful anointed dies and is ressurected - See Revelation - Its Grand Climax at Hand! page 24, paragraph 4.
Enjoy!
