Blondie - yes I'm new to the board, but I lurked awhile. I haven't been at a meeting forever, but when I use to go, I use to make the same type of "notes" on the side of my mag. Personal study. Kept me on track. I don't do it anymore, but I love to read the same type of commentaries. Sometimes I pick up an Awake or Watchtower - the last Awake (Oct?) can't remember the exact date, but one of the articles was dealing with Mobile Phones (cell????). One of the illustrations was of a 17 yr old girl who started using her phone inappropriately by talking everyday to a boy in the same congregation. Fortunately, her parents found out and involved the elders. They put a stop to this before it progressed (gotta keep him single for bethel!). I was between laughter & sickened by the control of this poor young girl. Everyone knows that a more appropriate use of her phone with the boy should have been for phone sex and not discussing her problems.

by blondie in" why not, they better get used to it because that is what the elders do.
god is definitely near but the elders will be far away.. logical reasoning.
in conclusion, do the jws really teach gods word or the truth about god?

According to some logic presented, Doubting Thomas didn't stand a chance.
Last night, I was out for supper with some friends, and we got on this very topic. One person presented an interesting logic... Is God the creator of everything? Is there a limit to his creative abilities? eg. Could He create a boulder heavier than what he could lift?
I thought it was funny.
I believe the most interesting aspect of life is questioning it. Just because there are differences out there doesn't make one "right" and the others "wrong". They could all be equally right or wrong. They're just different. Variety exists. One form doesn't make the rest less or wrong. There are a variety of ideas... who put them all there? Couldn't they all be right? Don't tell me Satan and humans can think beyond God... (lol)

Funny story from when we were leaving.
by JeffT ina couple of weeks ago my wife and i took a vacation to celebrate our anniversary.
we spent one day on the beach with some wine and had a long and wonderful conversation about the courses our lives had taken.
she reminded me of something that had happened as we were escaping, and after reading the post from ray franz, i thought i'd relate to the board.. in the spring of 1988 i had reached the end of my rope with the wt.

Both me and my sister are on the "outs" only a few months apart. It took us a few years. At the beginning, I wasn't sure how she was feeling about everything. I'd visit her, at the time she was pioneering... so one time, I "sorta" suggested we go out for a "drink". She perked up a bit, and said she knew a place, a bar. In my mind I was "yeah!!!". So we did. Me, her and her roommate... all good little JW's - off to the bar. We had a blast, and every time I'd go visit, off we'd go. Soon we were talking about how we felt about things, doctrines, etc. and to my great surprise, we felt the same way. Its good to have a family member who you can talk to. The rest of our family are JW's and don't talk to us at all.

Seeking a treasure you believe in. I watched a Discovery channel special on people looking for Atlantis, the Loch Ness Monster, Sasquach... people believe their abducted by aliens. Somethin' going on. I can't say they're crazy, just that they really do "believe".
Anyhooo, another reoccurring thought I've always had, is the "odds" of the universe/life appearing on its own is A ZILLION-BILLION TO ONE. OK. The "odds" of you being born is the same. Say the flood (lol) didn't happen, you wouldn't have been born. If you're parents hadn't met (or had that one-night stand) - hmmm, you wouldn't have been born. I feel guilty every month, when I'm on the rag, because that egg was a potential life that didn't happen (lol). Yet, here we all are, walking around despite the odds of us being here.

Nowhere - ALBERTA
So many dumb rules... so little time!!! The "social" status within the Org - eg. if you're a Pioneer (lady) you should strive to marry a Pioneer Brother - but in the same breath the brother was encouraged not to marry (go to Bethel, MS School, etc.). Leaves you kinda frustrated :(

StinkyPantz - don't get me going... I question alot. Use to get me in "trouble"... somehow I'd always shut up the group (service). For eg. it use to bug the hell out of me that the Creation Book and now the Creator Book basically discount evolution because no one can explain where "life" originated... yet it never phases them that they all believe that the most intelligent, powerful, all knowing, all giving, blah blah blah just "existed". How wonderful! My mind can't wrap itself around this logic. To tell a scientist he's foolish because he can't explain the "spark" of life, yet I can't tell him where God came from. Ohhh, makes me real smart!!!
Truthfully, if I believe in God, which I'm not sure I do, I have to believe that everything is exactly the way he wants it. No mistakes. Otherwise, do we have a "perfect" God?
I learn from nature. The violence in animals - but also their personalities, and social structures. Homosexuality exists in nature. So does abundant variety. I believe if people want, they can worship God in a variety of ways... only man "limits" the worship to rules. If "God" only wanted one way of worship then it would be clear. It is not clear.

OMG - you reminded me... Smurfs. When they were popular, JW Urban Legends, were circulating that they were demonized. I forgot. Oh, and "Scooby Doo". I was a lucky JW kid... my parents would allow us to watch the cartoons that came out at X-Mas, etc. but we couldn't tell anyone.
Weird rule - counting your time... hmmm starting when you first "talk" to someone, after "amen" at the hall, etc. Big discussions and judgements over this one. Do you count the "coffee break" and if so, how long????

If you have a beard (CANADA), you can't serve as a MS or elder. Some of the nicest brothers I knew had beards... come to think of it, throughout my whole JW career, I only knew 3 that "bucked" the rules and wore a beard... damn, come to think of it, I think they were bikers (driving their Harley's to the KH). LOL :)

This is my own personal thought and belief... its "developing and changing" but its what I've settled on. Sometimes, I'm not sure what I "believe", but I know what I don't believe. I do believe and trust in a joint human conscienousness. For example, all religions teach "life after death", they differ but they all agree that "something" survives. Now, whether we have an energy, life force with our "spirit", that leaves once the body dies, we could. I tend to lean towards evolution, but I don't discount a life force that keeps returning or being used in different forms. Life is full of cycles - rain, weather, etc. and I like to think that "life" is a cycle also. Sometimes I think all "God" is, is the miracle of this life force that works through everything from germs to us, and since no one really understands or can explain it, we (as humans) worship it.
Hmmm... now that I'm reading this in print, sounds kinda stupid.
