i found this in one of my course books.

it's quite interesting, added to a chapter dealing with dynamics of friedman-robertson-walker universes.

it looks to me like this man doesn't deny the possibility of a diety, and he is a respected scientist, no creation-pseudo-nonsens-scientist.

Nowhere - you posted the article. I responded... I got the point. The chances of this universe being able to support life are soooooo small that some are turning to a "multiple universe" theory. Simple. All I was pointing out, was just because something, by chance is infinitesimal - doesn't mean it can't happen.

The 200 million sperm, just shows your odds were 1 in 200 million + the right time of the month + the right 2 people x all the generations prior. Yes, I know we have "fighter sperm" and "weak sperm"... but unlike Monty Python, I wasn't singing the praises of sperm. And my point was it does matter "who" reaches the egg, otherwise we wouldn't be having this conversation.

Here's a "lucky" coincidence...

Out of my dad's millions of little "squigily, squirmy, sperms" one in particular made it to my mom's egg at the right time of the month, in the right year, month, day, hour, etc. for me to be concieved.

Had they not met, I wouldn't be here. Had it been a month later, a different egg would have meant a different person. Had a different sperm fertilized the egg, I wouldn't be here. What are those odds???? I'm "lucky" to be here I guess.

Then if you go back... what were the chances of each of their parents meeting and producing them... what about my grandparents? We have a whole family history of the odds of these two people meeting and having their children.

Keep going back. The odds mount to an impossible set of "lucky" coincidences that we were even born. Crazy. Yet there are billions of us walking around, despite the odds of our individual self being here.

So the odds of all life are infinitesimal - immeasurable, but it happened. What are the odds that a "creator" exists out of nowhere (no explaination there) and made everything? What are you saying, that a powerful, intelligent being can exist without a creator? Hmmmm, I believe I'm saying the same thing. We humans, animals, life, universe, exist "out of nothing", and I believe in it.

JH - you skipped out on your last topic "Armegeddon"... did you read any of the responses there. I'm curious why you didn't raise this point under that topic... its still dealing with the "end". Not attacking - just curious.

I'm back - and I'm an AUNT!!!

my sis had a boy!!!

he's a week old.

we have soooo many friends now.

My sis had a boy!!! He's a week old. Him, my sis and her fiance live with me, and for the few that sorta know my history, I stood by her and got DF'd. Well worth it.

We have soooo many friends now. I was a little worried about a baby-shower (whether we'd know anyone) because the only ones I ever attended were all witness ones, usually a dozen sister's would show and they were painfully boring! My biggest fear is/was that her and I would sit there, my mom would come and nobody would show... then she'd shake her head and think how much better off we were before with the "support of the congregation".

I've had a ton of work-mates, associates, friends ask when the shower is... so I've decided next month and since my place is small, and so many want to come, I'm going to have it as a "come and go". I'm planning some wine & cheese, reg. punch, snacks, music, decorations - I'm soooo excited. We sat down to do up our list and we're close to 40-50 girlfriends! CRAZY. I hadn't realized how many friends we had until we did this!

Now I'm optimistic that it'll go well. I hope my mom comes and sees how many care about us, and the variety.

Anyhoo, I'm catching up on all the postings I've missed, and adding my "sarcastic" thoughts.

How many years left to Armageddon

with all the emphasis put on armageddon in the org.

can we throw away all the signs that jesus gave, just because we quit being a jw?.

does armageddon scare you as much as when you were a jw?

JH - just so you know, I once felt your anxiety over "the end".

I grew up believing that I'd never get out of high school before the end. I graduated in 1986. Especially with the middle-east at that time, and the cold-war. Then the events in the early '90's got everyone excited, and many were studying the bible that were once associated with "the truth". Around '94, when I was pioneering, phrases such as "only months left now till the end" were common, but we had the "new light" to correct all our thinking about "this generation". Hmmm, the 80 years had past since 1914. The new generation thinking really got to me, but I hung in there.

Then my research into the UN really got to me. Give me a break. If the society itself really believed in armegeddon, do you think they would have tied themselves to the "wild beast" and started building support for this organization? Funny thing is that now, we don't hear a peep about the UN in the Awake!.

I did my own research into the "last days" and "armegeddon" via the net, and if you do a search on this topic in this forum, you'll get some excellent links.

Now I'm at a place that I enjoy life and all it has to offer. I value my principles, the same way many people do, and love my mom for raising me with morals. Do I fear God, "the end", and death? NO.

Take some time, do the research, and think about what a loving God wants for people. My spiritual beliefs are now based on nature, and science (which I find fascinating) and enjoy the freedom I have to read scientific theories.

What signs?!?! If you're refering to Mathew, Luke & John, look at the late 1400's - the "signs" were very active then!

Sorry for the sarcasm, but I don't see anything "new" going on... the "increase in wars, lawlessness, earthquakes (oops, forgot this doesn't apply anymore)" are pretty vague and can be used in any era. The late 1800's were full of "signs".

i have often wondered why some people that leave the wt organisation go really weird.

Nahhhh... I think you have wacked people everywhere. So you mention that an ex-witness "over" celebrated her/his first X-mas - hell, I know JW's that don't own TV's, only talk about the "truth" (like nothing else in life matters), you know the "tighty-whity's".

their house was the most decorated in town! Just because you leave the organisation, it doesn't automatically make some of the teachings wrong. If you believed Christmas was pagan a few months ago, why the big change?

Well - a few months ago their family loved them and talked to them... friends spoke to them.... now they're shunned. Why the big change? They're the same people, making different choices. But everyone views them different. So they can now view the world the way they want to - FREEDOM of choice, and they are practicing it.

People do all sorts of things. Religious, non-religious, rich, poor, young, old - doesn't matter. Someone will throw you for a loop, and lumping all the Ex-JW's as "wackos" doesn't make your case.

Growing up as a "good little JW" - I never "got educated" - however, I have always been interested in nature/science/archeology programs. Much of it goes over my head, but I grab "tid-bits" here and there.

My own conclusion, is similar to Metatron, that "life" has always existed. Perhaps in our joint human consciousness we know this and because its unexplainable, we label it God. I believe "life" is common, and marvel at the areas it survives. I often wonder if its recycled, and therefore, would explain the universal belief in mankind that we don't "die". I have no idea whether our "consciousness" survives with this life force though....
