@ Lois: If you feel up to it, and you would like to, tell us a little bit about yourself. Only what you feel comfortable with, though.

He was an "Elder in Prescott". What more do you need to know?

"Surely" you can't be serious? LOL.
my congregation got a reminder today to start donating money.
elder said that after the letter on the new donation arrangement was read, the contributions for that fund went from the average (i believe it was $500 or so) to $0.
after that reminder, cash was put into those boxes.
they are a business masquerading as a charity
.
WT is a business masquerading as a religion but is really a cult.
I don't think anyone mistakenly takes the WT for a charity by even the most liberal stretch of the imagination.
they have writes hundreds of other repetitive books, but no bible commentary.
is it because an actually commentary would destroy their doctrine and prevent them from being able to cherry pick scriptures?.
I'm pretty sure Ray Franz wrote in one his books that Ed Dunlap had written the Commentary on James.
.
Yes, this was detailed in Crisis of Conscience. I mentioned this early in the discussion but apparently it was overlooked....twice.
for a future conversation i will have with my mother i need some questions answered.
otherwise i will have to search and read through jw literature and i rather not :0. what was the teaching of 1919 during 1980's and 1990's (this is when i was active and my mother became a witness)?.
what is the current teaching of 1919?.
What evidence or proof does the governing body used that they are chosen from God?
.
No evidence exists. It is based solely on their say so. Conveniently, everything involving the alleged events of 1919 happened "invisibly".
My suggestion: why not ask your mother what one thing would cause her to doubt her beliefs or her religion is the true one? Whatever the answer is, that's what you discuss. Everyone has their "hot button", and trying to guess what that is by randomly choosing issues to dismantle may be a complete waste of effort and further entrench her into defending WT.
[edit] Ding, you got there right before me. Great minds....

You think God tried to tithe the dinosaurs to pay for a "Worldwide Jungle Improvement Fund"? Of course, under the guise of a final Theocratic push in the "momentous" last days of the Jurassic Period....

How did God function before humans showed up to do his fundraising for him?
i must admit i can at times be a little "egotistical" when it comes to knowledge and the bible.
i have studied the bible for so long and have always had a passion for the bible as a jw and as an ex-jw.
i guess that is all i have left when it comes to religion and as humans we do tend to stroke our egos.
And the earth is a "circle", not the sphere it actually is. Oh, and in Genesis light appeared before the luminaries were created. I like that one.

Why is God always broke?

"while it [bible] is filled with Legends and Myth, there are many truths contained within it"
.
Any "truths" the Bible allegedly contains are not unique to the Bible.
The problem is, when a person (god; whoever) mixes myths with "truth" or truth with lies, the reader does not know what to believe, and the effort one must expend to determine what's fact and what's myth becomes burdensome.
Personally, if I meet someone who lies some of the time while other times tells the truth, or they tell fictitious stories some of the time while other times they tell true stories, but they make no distinction between the two, I have nothing to do with them.
You'd think if god existed (he doesn't) and he inspired a book to be written about himself (he didn't) he would've figured this basic principle out ahead of time if he wanted people to actually takes his Word seriously.
