"The Watchtower Society can benefit from a healthy dose of humility."
Funny. Irwin Zalkin came to the same conclusion in his dealings with WT.
recently someone asked me to define what core teachings have such a hold on jdubs that they have trouble breaking free.
trying to single out the driving force that keeps them in the borg, this is what popped into my head:.
obviously there are lots and lots of wacky things the jdubs teach/believe/pretend to believe.
They are united (all believe the same thing, do the same thing, say the same thing -religiously speaking)
WT brags about this point, but really, what choice does a JW have? A JW must believe everything the GB teaches without question and regardless of evidence to the contrary; dissent is dealt with swiftly and harshly. Rather than being a bragging point, it's actually one of the most embarrassing things about JWs- 7 million+ minds that have been switched off.
Christ's presence started invisibly in 1914.
Except that it was originally pronounced by WT to have happened in 1874 and preached thusly for almost 60 years. Except for that, yes, Jesus' presence began in 1914.
JWs are to be no part of the world.
Except for the whole UN/NGO thingy, Rutherford's sedition against the US Govt, his attempted alliance with Hitler, etc, etc. Other than these, and more, examples of blatantly currying favor with the world, yes, WT is "no part of the world".
Preaching house to house is a must for all christians that are able to.
Despite the fact that not one scripture says Christians preached from door-to-door, no commandment saying as much exists, and no record exists that Jesus ever did it.
Other than that, yes, it's a requirement for Christians.

WT doesn't so much have "core" doctrines as it does doctrines du jour.
was it necessary for god to kill all innocent firstborn children?
no other way out for the almighty god?.
I don't have any proof. But if an entity labeled God made the universe it would make sense that he was outside of it.
What if an entity called man invented god?
wt doctrine now says that there was no faithful feeding slave at pentecost, in apostolic times, ---but there is now, since 1919. previously they taught there was always a slave feeding -sometimes unknown , but an unbroken, if sporadic lineage.. while the early, and later christians (in this doctrine) had no discreet slave, they had a governing body.
the tradition of a (wt) governing body is older then the idea of "feeding my sheep".. governance over care.. are they working on an unbroken if sporadic governance of the congregation too?
we still feel the reverberations, consequences of the talking snake too.. .
It's a parody of a joke of a conundrum no matter how look at it.
Allegedly Jesus comes in the first century to establish truth and restore pure worship...then he dies and leaves his followers with nothing (no FDS) for the next 2,000 years. Epic fail.
Russell allegedly picks up the torch given him by Jehovahâ„¢ in 1876 as the modern FDS. WT recently pulled his FDS ranking and asked for their decoder ring back (post-mortem, of course. It's easier to bully a corpse).
According to WT, all anointed were the FDS. As of 2013, only the GB is the FDS. This is interesting because their has not always been a GB. Russell was an autocracy; Rutherfraud was a dictatorship. The GB didn't exist until late in WT history, and until recently, they had no clue they were the FDS. Hell, until the later 1970's the GB was simply window dressing for WT, as the Prez had all the power.
Ah, the world of WT....
was it necessary for god to kill all innocent firstborn children?

God is outside our universe.
He is outside the box.
So whether God had a begining or not outside the box is inconsequential.
God exist outside time. Time only exist in our universe with man.
I saw this episode of Star Trek also.
You know deep down that things don't come from nothing. We came from God...
Nope, sorry. You assume too much. Consider some of the cutting edge science in the world of physics. It is becoming more explainable how something CAN, and most likely did, come from nothing.
GOD is not a legitimate default to every mystery.
[edit]: I respect your right to believe what you want to believe, JB. It's just that some people need more than feel-good religious ideology/fantasy when it comes to life and important questions. I find the "god did it" default position empty as it answers nothing. It's the lazy way out of a good, deep thinking session.
leave it in jehovah's hands.
is there a more disgusting phrase in jw land?.
the abuse, harms, thefts, suicides, family destruction - leave it in jehovah's hands.. why would anyone with a more than 2 neurons say, "oh that makes sense," we do not need to change or intervene in any way.. sooner or later, god will take of things.. .
Perry's success has nothing to do with Jehovah's inaction in many wicked and sad world affairs.
Perry doesn't know this. Break it to him gently. Learning that god is not his BFF will rock his world.

Perry: After making peace with God....I have a wonderful family, a very profitable business and much more joy and peace in my life.
I wonder what a theist's explanation is when an atheist has all these things too???

"Green and his counterparts, in 2002, persuaded university officials and regents that public safety on the campus would be enhanced if the officers were allowed to carry Tasers and other stun guns and, in 2007, to carry handguns and other weapons similar to those used by municipal police officers."
.
Interesting. He didn't simply go along with a weapons policy already in place but actually "persuaded" officials to get guns and other weapons into his officer's hands.
Completely hypocritical considering WT's stance on guns, weapons and self-defense.
Typical JW: claim to be obedient to the GB because god uses them, then go the opposite direction when it personally suits him.

@ TTWSYF: "Anddontcallmeshirley- a little harsh...just saying"
Not harsh at all, TT. I find the fundamentalist, self-aggrandizing 'look at me, I'm so special, god does favors for me' rhetoric nauseating at best. Please don't confuse stating an obvious fact with "harsh".
@ TTWSYF: I agree with his post.
That's too bad. I feel sorry for you.
