So the guy is an idiot. But he should have the freedom to express his views - even if they are demonstrably wrong.

Unfortunately, too many Western countries have outlawed some very specific forms of speech and prohibitted some from expressing their views. If they can take those rights, they can take your rights, too.

Having laws prohibiting expression temporarily pushes the issue under the carpet. Austria may be better off with a better-educated public that could specifically refute the platform used by such hate mongers.

I wonder though ... It feels like there is an underlying issue that is not getting addressed. What is it about this holocaust-denial message that makes it so persistant?

Its odd that this can seem so 'run of the mill'. Anyway:

1. Infant dies of lack of needed health care (blood issue)

2. MS turned in by recently married daughter. She needed to keep him from her newborn twins. He had been schtupping her thru her teens. (MS and his his wife were the most pious, self-righteous people in the hall)

3. Elder leaves his wife and runs off with his best-friend's wife (she having 5 children still in school). Both couples get divorced, elder and mommy get married. All keep going to the same hall.

4. Daughter of a friend of mine gets molested, molester get reported to the elders, nothing gets done. My pal Joey takes the bold step: He went to another hall.

i saw this in the news paper today.

busted a gut laughing.. reuters.. washington (reuters) - the white house was bombarded with questions on monday about why it failed to go public with news that vice president dick cheney shot a fellow quail hunter until the day after the accident.. the victim, harry whittington, 78, took pellets in his cheek, neck and chest when cheney fired his shotgun while aiming for a bird during a hunt in southern texas on saturday, and was in stable condition at a corpus christi hospital.. whittington was moved out of intensive care on monday afternoon but peter banko, administrator of christus spohn hospital, said he did not know when he would be discharged.. "his condition continues to be stable ... it's not critical, it's not serious.

he's in stable condition, doing extremely well," banko said.. the accident happened about 5:30 p.m. on a private ranch about 200 miles south of san antonio, where the vice president has hunted previously.

A changing story is at least disconcerting. More likely, it is a sign that the original story is a lie.

And now I don't believe the story. Of course anything is possible, but a #7-1/2 shot at 30 yards should not penentrate clothing, skin, and muscle with enough momemtum to get to the heart.

(And more sadly, the story is not as funny as it was.)

I was talking to a guy here at work that took a few in the hand some years back. Didn't even need to go to the Dr.

It never happened to me (looking around for some wood to knock). But I did come too close once in Iowa when I almost put some into the ear of a Black Lab. I think the owner soiled his long johns.

Of course all us gun guys are shaking our heads with a sigh and a 'what a dope.'

But if you hunt upland birds long enough, you'll see it happen. If I heard correctly, the victim was trying to catch up with the lead party when they flushed some birds. You cannot do that without announcing to the group you are trying to join. The joiner must watch closely because the group doesn't know he is there and birds can take flight at any time.

Of course the shooter is responsible for knowing his target and the surroundings. But once the birds are in the air, focus shifts. Quail will explode into any which direction. The person trying to join the group took quite a risk.

That being said, a word or two about bird shot: They were probably shooting shells with #7 or #7-1/2 lead shot fired at about 1200 fps. Those are small pellets, much smaller than the standard BB of a BB-gun. The small lead shot loses speed quickly and the guns are built to disperse the lead into a wide pattern.

Though not a pleasant experience, shot that small can only be dangerous at close range.

By the way, that is why we wear glasses.

Do you agree with national I.D. cards?

appearing in today's reuters news is this item about i.d.

cards to come in the u.k.. australia is once again raising the idea for downunder.

(it was defeated in a referendum some years back.).

The US has had a national ID initiative in some form or another over the last 10 years or so.

I do oppose such initiatives. I oppose them because of the direction they take us. Supporters express short-term benefits like national security and immigration reform. But I fear they are another step in federalisation, authorities taken from the states.

Also, proponents of national ID cards come up a bit light on restricting their usage. I foresee national driver's licenses, governmental tracking of movement, governmental tracking of purchases. We already have way too much of that. Even if it is possible, it will take decades to correct the erosion of personal rights in this country.

I oppose giving our government any new tools.

Assembly Time is Near! Were you always a good Dub when you went?

i've gotten into at least one argument at every one i've gone to.

last summer, i started laughing when a sister on the stage told us how "proud" she was that she only had two complete place settings in her house.

if more than one person came to visit she related that she had to wash a cup so that the other one could drink.

Were you always a good Dub when you went?

Hell, no. There were a lot of boys in my hall and we used to get into some stuff.

One summer at a DC in a Dog Race track in Taunton, MA, we found that the liquor store across the street would sell beer to the oldest-looking one of us. So we bought beer and brought it back into the assembly. We were working and had passes to all the back rooms and the like. We congregated in the underground walkway that the cashiers use to access the betting booths. We sat under there and drank ourselves silly.

One time, at the same DC, we took the beer and drank it beside the road at the edge of a field. Some local kids took exception (we littered). We flipped them off and chased them. They got some other friends and as we were walking back to the track, they did some dangerously close swipes by us with their car. They also flashed some knives. Actually, we stood up to them.

That was bit intense for my 15-yr-old suburban self - good little JW boys that we were.

I like to get the stats:

50% Iron count - at the very high end of normal (good)

60 resting heart rate - I'm really happy about that

110/70 pressure - not bad for an old guy

I'm glad they don't take cholesterol counts. Historically, my blood, though freeflowing, is just this side of gravy.

Clearly there are a lot of things that the cult leaders need to answer for. Some hit closer to home with some. I feel for those with split familes, those shunned by loved ones, people with lost childhoods and unecesary stress through their formative years.

But I gotta go with the Blood Doctrine: The horrible power of those can can convince parents to follow such direction. Literally dooming infants to death by denying available medical care. This one hits home.
