no sun spots?
by John Doe indrop in solar activity has potential effect for climate on earth.. .
the sun has reached a milestone not seen for nearly 100 years: an entire month has passed without a single visible sunspot being noted.
the event is significant as many climatologists now believe solar magnetic activity which determines the number of sunspots -- is an influencing factor for climate on earth.. according to data from mount wilson observatory, ucla, more than an entire month has passed without a spot.

The problem is that mathematical models ( which are my actual stock in trade ), which exclude human CO2 products, and rely only on solar output and the earth's thermal mass, are more predictive than models that include the C02 variables. That is to say, if you run the models in reverse, which is a validation requirement, the CO2 based models fall apart, while the solar output based models more or less track. That is, the 1st and 2nd order derivatives are in proper phase. If there were no political pressures, CO2 concentration levels would be declared an orthogonal ( non relevant ) variable to climate trends. At least over the ranges we are seeing.
Add to this the sun spot news, which is still premature, and you get an even stranger scenario. Global cooling is MUCH MUCH worse than global warming. The current population of the earth could NOT be sustained during another minimum. Even one much less severe than the last "mini-ice age". Starvation would be pandemic.
The question becomes. If the sun is indeed headed into a reduced output period, and, if CO2 levels can be shown to have some measurable effect on climate; would the current proponents of CO2 emissions reductions reverse their positions and encourage raising the CO2 levels to counter the reduced solar output and to improve crop growth via CO2 absorption?
I'm not holding my breath. As that would increase my own personal CO2 levels. :p -

by AK - Jeff ini speak of the furry kind that burrow under my yard and destroy it.
this year in our area they were terrible.
i do not lie when i state that nearly every square foot of my front lawn was tunnelled this summer, some of it three and four times after i pressed down the tunnels with my feet and mower.

I believe I saw, in some documentry about golf or such, that some success was had by forming plastic explosive material into the shape of small woodland creatures such as rabbits or squirels. The detonator wires were attached through the uh... umm.. yeah. Anyway, the thought was that the burrowing critter would see the familiar form of one of it's garden friends and then walk up to it an try to start a conversation. Well, you can imagine their suprise :) I believe that the final segment showed that this methid is not 100% effective, though.

So... you have the magic pre-paid phone calling card to the past. You can call yourself any time in the past for 3 minutes. You can only pass on personally relevant information. No lottery numbers, stock tips, ballgame scores, etc.
How do you convince your past self to not hang up on you, much less listen to you? How far back do you go? Could you realy make a difference? Do you remember your old phone number? How would that conversation REALLY go?

For those who have never seen/heard the pedal steel, here is a link.
This isn't one of Randoph's better technical pieces, But, I think it is the one he is best known for.
