The answer to the first part of the question is easy: This is what JW/WTBTS leadership do. They lie. They have a long history of doing this.

I personally knew a brother that, about 7 or 8 years ago, tried to set up a little side business selling WT trinkets: calendars, pens, notepads and other tchotchke junk with the WT logo on it.
The WTBTS Legal Department actually sent him a Cease and Desist Letter. He showed it to me. I read it. It was real.
Have they changed? Or, does the WTBTS somehow get royalties from all this crap?
