  Compliment or criticism - what affects you most?

  a bit of introspection on this one ... just read on someone's post that a compliment makes him "float" for hours, and it got me thinking; within the spectrum of comments that people make about me, from compliment to criticism, which is the type that most affects me?.

  after my experience as a jehovah's witness, i find that i've become suspicious of compliments and over-sensitive to criticism.

  because a common technique of elders was to compliment someone before going down to business, that is, giving hard counseling or discipline.

  I find that I've become suspicious of compliments and over-sensitive to criticism. Because a common technique of Elders was to compliment someone before going down to business, that is, giving hard counseling or discipline.

  Elders are actually trained to do this. One of my fellow elders called it "The Counsel Sandwich." Usually the "compliments" were contrived just so the elder(s) could give the offending brother or sister whatever "counsel" it was they thought they needed.

  Elders don't know, appreciate or respect appropriate boundaries.

  Phone call from a brother last night

  the brother and his wife thought the statement at the end of this month's broad cast show was a little off.

  the org stated that jehovah's organisation can not be corrupted.

  (needless to say only three had shown up for the broadcast meeting at the hall) he's never heard that before so we filled him in as to what the org has been up to and gave him jwnet, jw facts as well as jw survey to look at.

  yes friends.....this is the comment said to me by an elder!.

  "your bad attitude is evident because you don't bring your meeting bag anymore!".

  i calmly replied: "but everything i need is on the tablet now......".

  i never have been or will be a jw, i honestly hate the wt (not the jws).

  being married to a jw, can sometimes make you crazy, i never believed any of the bs.

  it's to their credit that many modern christians prefer the jesus of the gospels to the god of the old testament.. ot god is an embarrassment.

  i am not going to list his multitude of moral crimes here but my personal favourite is his brilliant idea that a girl who is raped must marry her rapist.

  it's not his biggest crime but it demonstrates a disregard for human feelings that is beyond the comprehension of every moral person.

  What happened to the Canyon Lake Congregation in Socal?

  hi im new to the forum, and on a quest of sorts i was told the congregation was dissolved and not to talk about it but i am very curious.

  i beleive it was 10 or so years ago ( i wasnt there) most of the publishers i believe were distributed among other congregations.

  we had maybe fifteen "canyon lakers" but id like to know what caused this.

  This is a topic worthy of its own thread.

  I may start one in the next few days, ... better make that: a week or so.

  Actually, it is a very important concept separate, but related to, the original intent of this thread.

  Sadly I am very crunched for time at the moment so I'll merely do this fly-by and hope someone else picks it up.

  Love the Before & After side-by-side comparison:

  "The fact is, many educated people--including a number of scientists--question the validity of the theory." - Emphasis added

  It was things like this that got me to start questioning the validity of the content of the WT literature and the integrity of the authors.

  Their constant use of weasel words like "many" and "a number" really got me thinking:

  • "How 'many' are 'many'?"
  • "What's the 'number'?"- As in THE ACTUAL number.
  • Why don't they USE the actual number?
    
  • "Is it a little? Is it a lot? Is it big or is it small?"
  • "How 'many' scientists? For God's sake just tell us how many? Why won't you? Can't you?
    
  • "One is a number!"
  • It there even one?

  I was at university learning critical thinking skills at the time I began asking myself these questions. The consistent, recurring lack of academic honesty and integrity on the part of the writers and publisher of WT publications was one of the big things that got me to realize: Oh, my god, I'm in a cult!

  Now it's all review.
