Harvard, we agree on some things, others we don't.
I don't believe that the 2nd amendment gives carte blanche for anyone to own any weapon.
The purpose was to establish a well-regulated militia, emphasis on well-regulated.

Redvip, I would say to you that gun culture is different throughout the US, as well. I live in Maryland where handguns just are not a big part of the culture. The only open carry I've seen is on law enforcement and it's really difficult to get a concealed carry permit. And I like it that way.
Sometimes I feel like we are talking about 2 different countries when I hear the vehement differences in opinion over firearms. But, there's not, there's two different gun cultures.
I don't come from an area where there is a strong gun culture (other than for hunting) and other parts of the US have a strong gun-culture.
Sometimes I think that itself is a reason for such heated opinions on both sides.

Glad you're teaching your kids gun safety.
I personally wouldn't have a loaded shotgun in my bedroom. Anybody could be tall enough to reach it with a step-stool.
I think it's important to keep a gun unloaded until you intend to use it.
Good on you for using a gun lock and storing the clip in a separate place, as well as getting a gun safe. They're expensive, but a good investment safety.

The mother was irresponsible in multiple areas. So, my question is how do you keep irresponsible people from owning guns?

Well, that's good to hear Crazyguy. I also think that everyone should should have to take a gun safety course.
Look, I have a shotgun in my house, so I'm not entirely anti-gun, like I mentioned above.
But, it's locked and stored in the attic without ammo. The ammo is stored separately in another area. That's for safety. We also only use the gun for hunting, not self-protection.
Which brings me to Simon's point. If you store a gun safely, it's not useful for self-defense. If it's not stored safely, then it's dangerous.
