Disappointed

so last night me and hubby got round to watching love actually for the first time .

seemingly everyone says that it's a must see christmas film , people watch it numerous times .

sorry to say l was underwhelmed and won't bother watching it again.

Hugh Grant is an instant "channel changer" for me. Just the sight of him turns my guts. So no, I've never seen Love Actually and don't ever plan to.

Disappointing movies over the years?

FROZEN: Took the little kids because it was so hyped. Sickening. Almost walked out. My wife was in agreement.

AVATAR: Dumb as hell, most overrated movie of all time. James Cameron gets props for suckering everyone on this one.

BRIDGET JONES DIARY: Just like "Love Actually", I couldn't get 5 mins into it. Say, isn't Hugh in this as well? If so, double-yuck.

FOOTLOOSE: I'm a huge 80's movie fan, but I must admit this is the 1 80's film that I think I've seen once as a kid, and decided right there it was stupid and would never watch again. I just can't.

Why Not Celebrate Christmas?

so, jw's don't celebrate christmas or other holidays.

as bill cetnar once said, there are two reasons for everything: the reason they tell you, and the real reason.

they will tell you it's because christmas is "pagan" and can lead to all sorts of licentious conduct (like drinking too much macallan scotch?)..

Even if you look at that from the perspective of Paul talking about OT celebrations, why then don't JW's still allow or celebrate any of them? Also, Paul would have had to have known he was speaking to a broad audience, and that what he'd write would also eventually be read by a broad audience, or else he would have specified only the Jews.

Either way, who cares. WT is a cult who aim to control everything by sucking the joy out of life.

Kurt Metzger is a HILARIOUS ex-JW comedian, and even has a routine talking about growing up as one.

It's been known for a while that there are now probably more EX-JW's in the world than CURRENT MEMBERS.

So many people have been DF'd, DA'd, faded, born-in and then left, studied and left, etc......that it's become a real joke. What's funny is, that just like I can pinpoint if someone is/was a Mormon, I can also pinpoint JW's and ex-JW's. It's uncanny.

Aside: It was mentioned on ex-JW Reddit sub so I'll bring it up here as well. It'd be funny to have a Cedars Chia Pet. His head, with large nose and large neck-waddle. You spread the seeds on his head, all over his neck waddle, and even up his large snout. Then water. You can then decide how long to let his neck-beard grow.

Here's a verse I didn't even know existed while growing up as a JW, and one which completely spits in the face of the JW rules about not celebrating anything. Ironically, it comes from one of the most Pharasitical of all bible writers, the Apostle Paul.

Colossians 2:16, NIV:

"Therefore do not let anyone judge you by what you eat or drink, or with regard to a religious festival, a New Moon celebration or a Sabbath day."

Well now, that seems pretty damn clear to me. Yet JW leadership does exactly that; forbids any type of celebrations, religious festivals, New Moon celebrations, and then demonizes anyone else who dares to do so.

Many correct reasons have already been listed in this thread, so I'll only add this one:

All CULTS do this. Micro-manage, as well as divide and conquer using rules like this. JW's are absolutely a highly-controlling cult, and since learning of cult control techniques I am not surprised by this at all now. Once you accept that this is a cult, their bullshit rules against everything become evident as the petty bullshit that they are, and no longer apply to you. Shed that shit and move on. Fuck this cult.

Do the old boys on the GB actually report their field service hours?

this came to mind as my 71 year old wife got up at 6:30 to drive 1.1/4 hours to meet the field ministry group.

we live a long way from the kingdom hall and the traffic is horrendous where we live!.

somehow, i doubt the good old boys do much themselves.

TOMO3 couldn't even be bothered to offer up a "casual" witness when approached about whiskey preferences. Nope! He was all business; professing his wife's love of Jamison's Irish. No mention of the other J's - Jehovah and Jesus. Must have slipped his mind!

Honestly, that was the most striking thing about that whole incident. Not that he was at a liquor store in New Jersey, on a Sunday Morning (meeting time!), or even buying 10 bottles of McCallen's. No! It's that here he was out.....a Governing Body Member......and a member of the "world" approached him in casual talk.......and he completely missed the opportunity to lead it into a preaching opportunity. Didn't even cross his mind. What a bunch of fuggin' hypocrites. As a born-in, I had it shoved down my throat that I was to be a good-little JW at all times, place the old blue "School Brochure" with my teachers, even have literature out on my desk as a Witness. (uh, no! that shit didn't happen, I valued my life!) But oh hey! These fat old booze hounds can't even speak up in casual conversation when they are supposed to be an example and leaders! Fuck these chucklefuck clowns!

Holy Shit! Is THAT the fiasco I've heard so much about? That he met a 14-yr old in a car park for a BJ or something? Was having an affair only 1-yr into his marriage? What a creep! I mean, if he married and they then found out they weren't sexually compatible, the least he could have done was just up and get a divorce first. Or wait....he was still a JW?
