Thank you Elsewhere for clearing this up! I've wondered what the smurf deal was all about myself. I must have been a bad JW for a very long time. I let my kids watch the smurfs!

Survey about Depression & Therapy
by ESTEE ini would really like to hear your opinion on this topic:.
you know how the jws look down their nose on a person who falls into depression?
i am curious how many people here think that if you have been in therapy that you are emotionally weak.

There is absolutely no doubt in my mind that individuals actively seeking treatment for psychiatric issues are some of the strongest, courageous people around. There are many physical & emotional factors to be endured on the road to recovery. It takes the same kind of strong will, stronger actually, to travel this road as any other physical illness. I say this because the effects of the treatment on the body & psyche is not nearly as profound as the effects suffered by family, friends, & society. This travelled road can also be long.
I wont't go into the the effects of prescription drug therapy, because in my opinion, thats the easier part of treatment. But the support system that exists is the hardest. This is the time for compassion for what the patient is going through for it is "real". However, what is often the case is pity, condescension, scolding, or just plain apathy & alienation. If you are a current JW, you get all of this plus the guilt trip laid on you that your not faithful; your not doing god's will or worse, you must be doing something against god's will. OMG, you could even be demonized! Shudder!!! Your KH brothers & sisters are afraid of you & will subconsciously DF you.
One thing I guess I'm gratefull for is the 1987 Awake that finally recognized mental illness as a physiological issue, not a spritual one. for the 1st time that I recall, witnesses were allowed to seek psychiatric assistance. If it weren't for that, I would be dead. I have been treating depression chemically for 15 years. 10 of those years I spent treating bi-polar disorder, without support. Just recently, a new doc decided I may have an anxiety disorder on top of an inadequately treated severe depression, rather than bi-polar. Whatever.
This is a very interesting thread. I could go on, but should probably end this post now. I'm very passionate about this topic, & if I can be of assistance, please feel free to email me.
These are only my opinions. Much love to all.

My goals for 2003? Love and give more to everyone, even to myself. Now that I've faced most of
the passed, say thanks for the good things as well as the bad take the good with me, then leave
that past just where it is. Forgive everyone for the perceived wrongs as well as the real,
including myself. Make friends and family, not just acquaintances. Get my ass back into class
and just get over it. Speak my mind and not take it personally when others disagree. No more
bottling emotions. Be gratefull.
And if a nice guy comes along with romance on his mind, that would be the icing!
I want to thank everyone who has posted on this board. Whatever the topic, or the response,
either to my posts or others, I have greatly benefited in the last 30 days that I have
been here. I'm not the same as I was on Dec. 2.
Wishing all much love, joy, peace and prosperity. Theresa

HELP!!! Hubby turning home into 'Book Study'
by Skeptically Yours inmy husband, who's a ministerial servant, was approached by an elder and asked if he'd offer our home to become a 'book study' meeting place.. i'm a bit of a loner, and need lots of peace, quiet, privacy, and solitude; plus to boot you all know i'm living this sort of double life, you know, just doing the very minimum to remain a witness.. this is awful!!!!!!!!!!
i can't deal with it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
take care!

Please don't say your a bit spineless. thats telling yourself to stay down there where the JWs think all good little JW wives ought to be. You have a lot of strength. Your here aren't you?
If your husband will not listen to your needs & concerns and proceeds with opening up your home, to these people, invading your space, then by all means let him do all the work. IMO, Blondie gave some very good suggestions, especially regarding the pre & post meeting socializing. Don't feel like you have to be hostess, you don't owe them anything.
We had the book study in our home for a short time. I was very young with a baby & 2 preschoolers at the time & our house was small. I didn't attend half the meetings because I was always "busy" with the baby. We would go to the bedroom and watch TV. (The book study was always my least favorite meeting) We didn't have the study there for very long.
Take a deep breath and take it one day at a time. My thoughts are with you.
Take care, Theresa
