GettyHorror: The girl was forced to live with a terrible secret (stock picture)A Jehovah's Witness who got sexual kicks from strangling young girls went unpunished for years after his activities were covered up by the congregation at his church.
But perverted Ian Pheasey’s sordid past finally caught up with him when one of his victims went to the police after becoming concerned over him getting a job at a hospice.
He was jailed for five years after pleading guilty at Warwick Crown Court to assaulting one girl causing her actual bodily harm and two of indecently assaulting other girls, reports the Coventry Telegraph.
Pheasey, aged 54, of Langcliffe Avenue, Warwick, was also ordered to register as a sex offender for life and given a sexual harm prevention order restricting his contact with children.
Jailing Pheasey, Judge Griffith-Jones told him: “You obtain sexual gratification from the idea of strangling children.
“That is a hideous and discomfiting fantasy, and one which has given me some concern when I come to sentence you.
“One of the most serious features is that strangulation creates a risk of causing very serious injury and death.
“So it’s not simply a matter of it being frightening and disgusting that small children have been made to suffer in this way, it’s the risk they would suffer something even more catastrophic.”
Prosecutor Nicholas Taplow told the court: “He was a man who had a particular sexual fascination with the act of strangulation, which features in two of the three counts.
Jailed: Ian Pheasey was sentenced to five years at Warwick Crown Court“He derived sexual gratification from strangling children, and many children were strangled in this way by him during what he described as 'horseplay'.”
The offences Pheasey admitted date back to the 1990s when he was a member of the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses in the Woodloes area of Warwick.
His first victim was attacked in the Kingdom Hall library, where Pheasey was the librarian at the time, when the seven-year-old girl went there to get a book.
The girl was too frightened to tell anyone – and his actions may have gone undiscovered if it was not for his second victim’s subsequent complaint.
That girl was 14 at the time and he grabbed her round the neck and threw her to the floor where he straddled her and squeezed her neck.
The girl fell into unconsciousness, came round but then passed out again before coming round for a second time and crying out: “Jehovah help me!”
As she got up he calmly told her that if she told anyone, he would kill her, chillingly adding that if she grew up and had girl children he would rape them.
She ran home screaming and crying and told her mother what had happened – only to be told to clean herself up before she was taken to hospital for the bruising to her neck to be treated.
“Sadly her parents chose to conceal the sexual nature of the incident and told her not to say anything about it,” said the prosecutor.
"They continued to understate the seriousness of the assault, and the matter was swept under the carpet by the church."
Over the years that victim was badly affected by what had happened, suffering flashbacks and night terrors over it, and her religious faith was undermined.
She feels anger towards her parents and towards the congregation for not dealing with it properly, but felt unable to speak out – until she became concerned on learning in 2014 that Pheasey had got a job at a hospice.
The judge observed: “She must have been absolutely petrified. I’m satisfied you started to undo her clothing, but I sentence you on the basis that you did not defile her body.
“She was entitled to support and comfort which could only properly be exercised by this matter being reported to the police.
“Sadly, when she told her parents their priorities were entirely misplaced. As a result of their failures and of those around her, she has had to bear this terrible memory.”
And the judge praised the courage of that victim in coming forward 'not to help herself, but because she was anxious that others should be protected'.
Pheasey’s third victim was just six when he was carrying out some work at her parents’ home; and as she sat in his van, he got in and began to tickle her before moving his hand up under her skirt – but stopped when she kicked out and screamed.
Following his arrest Pheasey said he could not remember the incident in the library, but accepted he had put his hands round that girl’s neck on more than one occasion.
He admitted he had fantasised about strangling the 14-year-old, and had lured her over with the intention of strangling her and becoming sexually aroused.
Nick Devine, defending, said: “The inevitable lengthy sentence of imprisonment will have devastating consequences for him, going to prison at his age for an offence of this nature.
“It may be that, while the congregation of the Jehovah’s Witnesses can be criticised for how they dealt with it, it has at least acted on him in part to prevent a return to acting out the fantasies he had.”

Serena Williams is coming off a high of being named Sports Illustrated’s Sportsperson of the Year and on Friday she was named the Associated Press female athlete of the year, but you’d never know it judging from some of her Christmastime social media posts.
Exhibit A: “As always, dinner for one.”
https://instagram.com/p/_sXBcDMTMd/
On Christmas Eve, the 21-time Grand Slam champion posted a picture of a roasted chicken on her Instagram account and captioned it with a depressing sentence, “As always, dinner for one.”
The 34-year-old star, who most recently was connected to the rapper Drake, added, “I like the leg. #leftoversforaweek”
Of course, perhaps Williams was just teasing her first Christmas Day post, which brings us to…
Exhibit B: “Have a good day.”
Williams doesn’t just like legs, she’s got legs and she showed them off on Christmas morning. And while it’s fine to flaunt it if you’ve got it, the timing of Williams’s leggy post seemed odd on a day like Christmas, when other athletes are posting photos of themselves in silly onesies with their friends and family.
[Proof that Christmas turns athletes into giant kids]
Williams’s fans were not hating, though. They thanked the star for her holiday gift. Williams’s photo was liked over 70,000 times, yet still the only caption on it was, “Have a good day.” Not even an exclamation point.
[Williams’s revealing SI cover proves sex sells — and it’s good for feminism]
As some people on Twitter pointed out, however, Williams is a Jehovah’s Witness, a sect of Christianity that doesn’t believe in celebrating Christmas with the traditional fanfare. So it’s likely Williams is feeling a-okay, especially compared to Saints linebacker Kasim Edebali, who made a video of himself coming home to an empty house on Friday.

"The church is reeling after a Royal Commission in Australia made 77 adverse findings"

Chris Webber, Reporter (Stockton/Hartlepool) / Friday 25 December 2015
A FORMER Jehovah's Witness from Hartlepool calling for changes in the way the church deals with victims of sex abuse has been interviewed as part of a major national investigation.
The church is reeling after a Royal Commission in Australia made 77 adverse findings about the way the church dealt with sex abuse accusations in Australia and in the UK in October campaigners wrote to the Government arguing it should be mandatory for the church to go to police whenever an allegation is made.
That follows two high profile North-East cases where Jehovah Witnesses were criticised in court in the last two years for not going to the police when allegations were raised within tight-nit church communities in Washington and in South Shields.
Now Hartlepool man and campaigner, Steve Rose, has been interviewed by the Charity Commission which is conducting a long-term investigation into the religious group's safeguarding procedures.
Mr Rose has previously been featured in The Northern Echo after raising concerns about practices in the church. On that occasion he claimed he had been 'shunned' and 'disfellowshipped' from the church after falling out with other members. He said that for younger and more vulnerable members with fewer friends outside the group the effect can be devastating.
But now he is campaigning against the Jehovah Witnesses' so-called "two-witness" rule which means the church only investigates internally if a claim is corroborated by a second testimony, very unlikely in sex abuse cases.
Mr Rose, who was interviewed by the Charity Commission in early December, said he was pleased the Charity Commission were investigating and was happy to help. He said: "It is very difficult for people, maybe young people, in the church to go to the police. The church says it monitors convicted sex offenders. But what other church sends its members from door to door like that?"
In a detailed defence a spokesman for the Jehovah Witnesses stressed the organisation abhorred child abuse which occurred across society and pointed out the organisation has no paid clergy and did not separate children from parents with youth clubs and Sunday schools and the like.
In a prepared statement he said: "The victim and his or her parents have the absolute right to report the matter to the governmental authorities.
"Congregation elders do not shield abusers from the authorities or from the consequences of their actions.
"Anyone who commits the sin of child abuse faces expulsion from the congregation. If such a person is serving in a position of responsibility, he is removed."
The Charity Commission confirmed it was investigating.
