Anyone else an Ex Bethel "volunteer"
by BackseatDevil ini was wondering if there were any other ex-bethelites on here.
i personally regularly went for temporary work at brooklyn then was assigned to the farm for a year and a half.
it was... one of the most bizaare experiences of my life.. so i wrote it all down (finally, after some 15 years) so i won't bore anyone on here with the details of the story - because bethel doesn't show up until chapter 15... and for you straight folks, it gets a bit gay in two places... but nothing gross.

Your Top 5 - Most Harmful JW Teachings
by Scully inwe all know that the doctrine and dogma of the wts is completely false, so i'm not even going to include topics like "trinity" or "gehenna" or anything like that in my personal list.. but i'd like to see what other people list as their top five most harmful jw teachings.. #5. females in the congregation are inferior to males.. #4. you must override your personal conscience in favour of wts rules, even when you know it's wrong.. #3. shunning disfellowshippedtm and disassociatedtm individuals, without being allowed to form your own opinion or hear their side of the story, even when it is a family member or close friend, this teaching destroys families and results in far too many people taking their own lives from the agony of being rejected by the only people they have ever had relationships with.. #2. forsaking higher education, well-paid employment and planning for retirement.. #1. the no-blood rule has cost more lives since it was first introduced by rutherford than jonestown, 10 times over..

#5 The New World Translation of the Holy Scriptures is the most accurate bible on the planet and each world of the bible should be taken with precise literalism.
#4 There are two classes of Jehovah's Witnesses... males who can do anything, and females who must know their proper place.
#3 There are two classes of human beings, those that live outside of Jehovah's Organization that is not worthy of help either through charity or through humanitarian work, and those that live inside Jehovah's Organization that one must be willing to give their life for.
#2 There are two classes of Christians, one class that goes to heaven and another class that lives here on earth.
#1 Being humble before Jehovah. - As a religion who honestly believes that they have the one true answer, there is a background smug sense of superiority that develops. Pretty soon this sense of superiority means they are judging people as 'sheep' or 'goats' (even jokingly) or judging each other as to whether they are good enough to be in God's One True Organization... all under the guise of being "humble before Jehovah". I'm pretty sure that is one of my biggest issues with the religion as well as an issue that trickles down to many many hypocritical issues of the organization.

What piece of WT literature is worth holding onto, or have you kept? Why?
by losingit ini have basically thrown away all of my bound volumes and loose wt and awake magazines.
i kept some bpoks, the insight to the scriptures, god's love, the reasoning book, and daniel's prophecies (this was my favorite) .
i held onto insight to the scriptures after reading some of ray franz's book, crisis of conscience.

The ONLY peice of literature that I kept was the regular pioneering book Shining as Illuminators of the World and... I can't really tell you WHY I kept it. I think initially it was not a lot of specific dogma in it per se, it was more about how to connect with people, HOW to answer questions (regardless of what those answers might be). I found it helpful in just dealing with day to day people... listening, connecting with people... researching information if you don't have the answers.
It was a lot about technique and not a lot of JW beliefs, so I always kept it. I mean, I did work a year to get the damn thing... LOL.

THE LOGOS for Hipsters
by Terry inthink of the ancient world as classical music.. .
think of greek philosophy as rock n' roll.. .
there is still classical music, but, rock and roll overtook and dominanted popular tastes and changed the marketplace.. .

Trust me, the ones worth discussing anything with would be the ones that already find the dense and boring subjects "tasty". Not hipsters. LOL.
And I'm thinking the Dead Sea Scrolls are the goth kids. HAHA! anyway, I liked it, so I guess I'm a flunkie too.

It's interesting. But the 'hipster' part that threw me off. A hipster would have read the first few lines and said "what? this is not about me?" and moved on. LOL.
Everything else you mentioned had intellectual weight, even in debate and discussion. But the hipster thing throws it off. hahaha!

I don't know that you're loyalty is a "fault" per se. It can be... some people are loyal to abusive relationships no matter what.
BUT if you have a strong sense of loyalty... if you understand the meaning of the word and respect the actions which that world implies, then you look at loyalty as somthing different, something that is earned.
.A strong sense of loyalty is emotionally based. Because of such you can't just be loyal to everyone out of default. You will run yourself ragged. It's like trust, your heart, or your penis... you can't just be throwing it around all the time. People have to earn the right to get that from you.
Otherwise you will be constantly emotiionally drained with no way to build yourself up... and then you're no good to anyone (per my previous post). :-)

A Great Party Last Night.
by Thoughtless inlast night i went to a party with a (worldly) gal yesterday, twas great, but i feel like we are losing intimacy.
i haven't told her about my religion because i am afraid she may judge me or something.
i have a very complicated past and such, and the borg complicates it further.

I wrote extensively on this subject (so i won't bore you with it here), but for me personally, seeing nice and honest people that were nice and honest naturally was bizaare to me. They didn't have Jehovah or the elders... what reason do they have to be nice?? It made no sense.
And then I was hanging out with a bunch escorts (female) and I noticed something. It was a community thinking, a group concern, but not in the same rigidness JWs have. So, applying that outside of the "escorting" situation you see the same pattern in firemen or policemen... we see it with people who work with the Red Cross, etc. Some people are just humanitarians, global thinkers - helpers in the world. The wicked world isn't FILLED with selfish, godless, dishonest heathens. They are there, but percentage wise per capita the ratio is pretty much the same whether you're talking about Jehovah's Witnesses, fireman, or whores.

You know how when you're flying somewhere you have to watch the flight attendants do their little routine? In that routine they say something that I use in life all the time, and I will share with you now:
In case of emergency, oxygen masks will drop down in front of you. Please pull the mask down toward your face and place the mask over your mouth and nose. If you are traveling with a child, please attend to yourself first, then the child. Breathe normally, adjust the headband to suit yourself.
Sometimes it is not our initial desire or our inherent response to deal with what we need first, but if we want to be of good use to others (especially other famlily members), it's important that we do.

Happy 4th to everyone (who cares)!! It honestly is a great 4th for me with the overturning of DOMA and Prop 8. I've always been happy to be an American... but for the first time I feel America is happy to have me. :-)
Have a great holiday!
