We all know good people who are not at all spiritual people. Some of them are JWs or EX-JWs.

we have all sat at jw meetings and heard some ridiculous statements that were either shocking or just plain old bunk.

usually it is the same jw individuals that make those statements time and time again.

you know the type..... you can almost expect such comments from them.. jws place great importance on what statements or persons are 'stage worthy'.

The Unhospitable Elder

we used to have an elder in our congregation that never invited anyone to his house.he was a real moocher, though.

he was always paying a visit to the "friends" around dinner time.he was single and never had a girlfriend.

one day a couple of us went to visit him at his apartment, just to see if he would invite us in.

Not sure if this is the same guy, but some friends said that the last name sounds familiar. Out of Oregon. A town called Prineville. Somewhere around Bend. He also had some family there they said.

Odd fellow they said. Married with a daughter and a son they thought. Daughter was at home a few years ago. Son was off someplace else.

Did not use a water heater or electricity. Heated water over a wood stove for bathing and cooking. Used candles and lanterns for light. Most of the walls were bare. Little if any interior decorating.

Drove an old truck or car.

He lived unusually simple like that because he thought Armageddon was very near and would openly say that he lived the way he did because he felt that way. But he also had his doubts and complaints about the WT and JWs.

Like I said, they were not completely sure this was the same guy you were asking about.

Does this sound like the guy?

Here is one that was emphatically declared from a District Convention stage:

"The congregation Elders are the best counselors available.......because they base their counsel strictly from God's Word the Holy Bible!"

I guess no P.H.D. could ever measure up to those expert credentials.........

"God's Purpose" rather than "God...

if you mention "god's plan" to a jw, an immediate response will often be "god does not.

why is this such a sensitive point with the jws?

I have heard JWs say that a "plan" suggests that it could possibly be changed or even foiled by someone other than its designer.

And that a "purpose" cannot be changed or aborted, except by the designer.

You "purpose" to build a house, though, your specific architectual "plan" for it may change a few times before you actually complete your "purpose" of building a house.

In JW language......... Jehovah's "purpose" is for obedient humans to live forever in Paradise Earth. How Jehovah accomplishes could be in several different ways..... 1.) Just create one man & one woman to populate and care for the Paradise Earth, happily ever after. 2.) Resurrect only natural born Israelites to heaven in rule and help manage humans the Paradise Earth. 3.) Resurrect a variety of 144,000 Christians to heaven, kill off all the bad people and then help rule and manage the obedient survivors in a Paradise Earth. Or 4.) Just start all over again. Whatever the case may be........ Jehovah's "purpose" will never change..... that of obedient, perfect humans living forever in a Paradise Earth........

When I read the definitions of the two words in English dictionaries, they appear to share almost the exact same definition.

So, unless there is some specific difference in the original Hebrew/Greek words for "plan" and "purpose", which there may be, it seems to be just another typical JW opinion on word definition.

JWs place great importance on what statements or persons are 'stage worthy'. They really try to regulate what is spoken from their stage, kind of like the F.C.C.... So hearing some extraordinarily dumb comment from their stage is always a highlight!

Once again, you are probably right onacruse/Craig. For JW brothers, kissing Elder butt is usually because they are hoping that kissing Elder butt will help get them appointed to some postion themselves.

onacruse/Craig, email..... what about the JW sisters though? What do they have to gain from kissing Elder butt? They don't really have a ladder of privileges to climb.

What kind of elder were you? A quiet little slave elder? Or a vocal hot shot elder with many special responsibilies and extra authority? The latter, usually receive most of the butt kissing.

Staying Awake Or Keeping In A Frenzy?

we ex-jws know very well how much the watchtower society put us under pressure to believe that "armageddon is just around the corner".

they've been doing it in one form or another ever since charles taze russell began publishing his nonsense.

in 1877 he advocated that true christians should believe that christ would "take them home" in 1878. when that didn't happen he moved the event up to 1881. after that he focused on 1914.. the society is still doing pretty much the same thing, building up expectations and then revising them, decade after decade.

What drugs do they prescribe for that "anticipation syndrome"? I know JWs would probably just treat it with ALCOHOL... LOL..... but do they actually have prescription drugs to treat "anticipation syndrome"?
