In today's mail came a envelope from Ms. B[edit] C[edit] of Rawlins, Wyoming. Betty and her family were our longtime associates while were in the cult of Jehovah's Witnesses. Enclosed were photographs of my wife, daughter, myself and my wife's sister. C[edit]s must of have collected these together and returned them to us in a little shunning stunt by mail. We departed from the cult a couple of years ago. There was no explanation. Just the photos. Has anyone out there been the recipient of such thing? We don't intend to return our photos of the JW's in our possesion in attempt to make any statement to them. We might throw them away or we might show them to our teenage daughter as reminder of what wolves in sheeps clothing really look like! Can we expect a deluge of photos from other previous associate cult members? Shall I put these folks on our Christmas Card List, now that we have their address?! Maybe our church prayer list would be more appropriate!
Thanks,
Duane Wing

Social Security Disability-(Usually depression related) was a popular source of income.
In our part of the states most of the breadwinners traveled great distances to peddle various wares including string cheese, coffee, toys, autoparts, auto stripes, and insurance. All self-employement activity scheduled around five meetings, assemblies and the coffee break outings...(service) My wife and I did a major stint in Tupperware. Tupperware actually opened doors of reality for us. We learned that there were very good, and sane people outside of Jehovah's Witnesses. We also learned we did not have to live like everything was temporary. We could plan ahead for retirement, we could send our child to college, we could vacation, we could save money, generally take care of ourselves. I remember clearly one time a brother called Peewee said most of JW's were not self-employed, but self-unemployed.

Alcoholics and alcoholism in the congregations
by badboy inwas it a problem in your congregation?

Sadly the alchohol is all they have. The boredom, the same old nonsense pumped out year after year from the bottomless well of BS in New York leads to all the self medication. The liquer is "food" you know..."a little wine"...."Timothy's tummy", badump, badump, badump..I think Timothy was seeking to justify an addiction. After the fact of addiction, professional help is not an option, nor is taking medication from a Dr.before the addiction, or at least sharing the knowledge that medication is being used. And, please don't think about a support group with all that "bad association". We can be thankful the witnesses can medicate themselves. Just imagine living in world with thousands of them more stressed out than they already are! It is simply astonishing the number of JW's with huge drinking issues. Looking back on it now objectively years later, just seeing this religious group drink like lushes should have been a red flag in itself to me. My ambitious ex-brother-in-law soon to be elder at the time was always plastered. He was soon appointed by the holy spirit to be a elder....I really think being able to put away a few bottles of wine every evening is an unwritten requirement for appointment by the "holy spirits"

Thinking about the CO's I have encountered over the years.....It went something like this:
1.) Brother Sleeparound: Took up with a young pioneer sister on a visit to the congregation. His wife did not approve.
2.) Brother Hothead: Smacked wiggly youngsters around in society's leased Pontiac while out in service.
3.) Brother Moocher: Expected everything free and on a silver platter.
4.) Brother Specialdiet: Special menu preceded his visits. No one would sign up to feed the finickyeater.
5.) Brother Newcars: This guy had a new car every six months. Carried a brush to keep the vent louvers in the dash free from dust. This was before the lease program. Needless to say not many of us ever seen the inside of the CO's car.
6.) Brother Coldheart: Did not believe in depression....."all in the head" he said.
7.) Brother Bethel: Get invited to Bethel....all bases covered.
8.) Brother Teetotaler: The drink was the root of all evils...
9.) Brother Birthcontrol: Don't have kids...period!

Two years ago my wife I resigned from the WT. My wife was raised by the borg. I was a baptized and confirmed Methodist until I was 18 and assimulated by the borg. Now we are both happy camper Methodists. Yesterday, (Sunday) the Pastor called me at 8:00 A.M. to say "she was sick.....and ask me if I would do the service today?" I was stunned at first. Then I thought, finally here is a use for 20 plus years of theocratic school! I conducted a full hour program by the seat of my pants and gave the sermon from the pastor's outline. Everyone in the church came to me afterwards to say what a wonderful job I did! Most of them have no clue I am a trained public speaker by JW's. I was more at ease with this group than I ever was with the witnesses or the houseolders! It felt good to realize that I can use something once in awhile that I learned in all those wasted years! It really felt good to come full circle and be back in a non-cult arena. I finally felt free from the wicked WT teachings.

Nice to meet you as well, outnfree! It is great that you are pressing forward. The WT has a way of keeping it slaves barefoot and poor.
