what are some of the fashion trends you've seen or worn at the hall?
any interesting stories to share?.
some i remember off the top of my head are tie bars, tie clips, polyester suits, wide ties... we used to have brothers who would "compete" with designer cologne like polo, etc.. the memorial was always a fashion show.. yellowlab

what were some of your fave acade games of the 80's?
mine were....paper boy .
pacman .
Joust, Defender, Space Invaders, Pacman, Paperboy, Crystal Castles, Tron
And my all-time favorite... Dragons Lair. I blew every last cent of my paper route money on that game! And Space Ace was another cool one... now I have both on CD and can play them for free!
Does anyone remember some of old Apple II/e games like Swashbuckler, Hard Hat Mack, Miner 2049er, Chopper Command, Montezuma's Revenge, Transylvania, Oregon Trail, and Decathalon?
I used to waste lots of time in computer science class in high school!

i've done a lot of lurking and have put in my two cents a few times on this board, but just realized i've never introduced myself here.. i'm one of five who was raised as jws.
my mom began studying not too long after she married; dad was totally against it.
coming from a divided household, we were treated as an nonentity in the congregation.
Welcome, Aarque! I enjoyed your posting.
I would think it's easier to fade away when you have other family members to fade away with. My entire immediate family, relatives, cousins, uncles, aunts, etc. all are JWs and have been for years. Some of them are elders and ministerial servants. I grew up with them my entire life, so shunning is a very scary prospect for me. Sometimes it's best to just disappear.
Hope to hear more from you!

hi, i'm a little bit nervous posting something in here.....this is the firts time.....i was just wondering what "good" or "bad" things you have to say about jw.
i have been a jw all my life and my husband too.
right now i'm in the process of getting out... or fading away....i'm not attending the meetings anymore.
Welcome to the board, layla!
My wife and I, too, decided to fade away about 7 years ago because we wanted to think for ourselves and not follow an organization with all their rules.
Consider yourself fortunate to have come this far in your thinking. Many people never do. You will find much support on this board and be assured there are many who have been in the same situation you are.
Look forward to hearing from you more!

This is scary stuff, folks.
Even I didn't realize what control they had on people even back in the 1950s. I vividly recall several relatives who had been disfellowshipped some years back and how we were instructed not to even look at them, say Hello, nothing. Just treat them cold and pretend they're not there. My uncle was disfellowshipped at the time of his folks' 50th wedding anniversary and he couldn't even be a part of it. He sat in a parked car outside the house where the party was at and watched through the window at everyone having a good time. That is really, really sad.
"in order to hate what is bad a Christian must hate the [Disfellowshipped] person"
I am shocked that this type of behavior would even be considered a loving provision. Think of the irreparable harm it has on children. It only serves to reinforce absolute control over their members. Even though this quote was over 50 years ago and you'd probably not see such strong language published today, you know darn well many of the older members in the congregation still heed this command.
This is exactly why I refuse to disassociate myself. As long as I fade away and not stir up any controversy, then I'm fine. I don't want to give my family and relatives a reason to not talk to me.

so what are all of you doing for valentine's day this year?
it sure is nice to have one day where you can celebrate your spouse, bf/gf, or significant other.
but the wts will have none of that!
So what are all of you doing for Valentine's Day this year? It sure is nice to have one day where you can celebrate your spouse, bf/gf, or significant other. But the WTS will have none of that! I remember getting sent home from grade school on Valentine's Day, to "protect" me from this evil pagan holiday. I never was able to make hearts from red construction paper.
Perhaps they fear the brothers and sisters would experiment with questionable things in the bedroom?

no, it wasn't that group of people who showed me what life is about.
hell, their so busy preparing to die that it seems life eludes them.
it was by becoming an active participant in my own adventure.
Like they always say, you only live once. Make the best of everyday and enjoy life to the fullest. You just don't know if you'll be here tomorrow.
It's depressing to think of how so many JWs lead unhappy, empty lives waiting for Armageddon to come and wash all their problems away. Many will go on being puppets of the WTS and never see that paradise they long for. And before long, they're dead. What a waste.
I used to know some fairly intelligent brothers and sisters at the hall and it is amazing how blinded they are by the WTS.
With the power of the Internet, freedom is only a few clicks away.
Perhaps printing up flyers with the "jehovahs-witness.com" web site address and placing them outside the KH some night might help? Sure they'd read it and initially throw it away, but curiousity would eventually lead them here? How about the title: "Are you tired of wasting your life at the meetings?"

...than jw girls do 'worldly' guys?
you would think so from the posts here.. how many posts have we seen here about jw guys who are dating non-jw chicks undercover (no pun)?
or is it just that jw girls are likely to be living at home and less likely to have a chance to date a worldly guy, because of the tight grip that jw parents have over their girls?.
I dated a "worldly" girl while I was a JW. Now I've been married to her for almost 8 years.
Can't say the same for my brother, though. He's 36, never been married, never had a girlfriend, and is still a virgin. (Now THAT is pretty rare, and strange too). He's still holding out for that perfect JW girl to sweep him off his feet. Too bad the JW girls get married at 19!!
If he only knew what he's missing...

obviously the witnesses are going door to door, but is it as effective as could be?
in all my years as an adult, only once has any witness come to the door preaching "the good news.
" this is once in over 15 years.
I moved away from the city 5 years ago and thought I'd forever be rid of pesty JWs coming to my door. I was wrong. Thanks to my brother, without my knowledge, he gave the elders my new home address which eventually made its way to the congregation which covers our territory. So now I get shepherding calls every few months. That really ticks me off that my privacy was intruded upon. When they come I usually end up hiding or not answering the door. And I keep my garage door closed ALL the time.
What I find interesting is they always come to just my house. I have never seen them going door to door to any other houses on our street or in the neighborhood. Looks like they have that false hope that I will become a good little Dub again. I don't THINK so!
