  hi there i am not a jw but i am having bible study.

  i came to christianity a few months before and i was searching for the right path.

  one of the things god spoke to me about and directed me in was to do away with all the vanity that was in me and now i wear the head covering and the modest dresses.

  Now that I think about it, if someone 'fulfils its brief" ... and you think about it after it happens in the past tense, that would be 'fullfilled its brief' or 'his brief was fulfilled."

  Sounds oddly like someone shit his pants in a room without anyone else knowing it ... fulfilled his brief. Or someone looking at the back of your pants and tapping you on the shoulder and saying 'your brief looks fullfilled'.

  Just saying.

  It is never conspicuous and always blends in to any setting and therefore fulfils its brief in a discreet and tasteful manner.

  'fulfils its brief'... ???

  Is this a misprint or can someone here who speaks British English explain what 'fulfils it brief" means.

  If I was translating it into American English, I would call it a man 'fitting into his underwear comfortably'.

  I doubt that was the intent, but then with the Brits, who knows.

  RubaDub, my best friend has a son named Caleb and one of my customers is named Caleb. Both are around 30 years old. I live in the United States.

  But anyway, thanks. It could also be a nice name for a Labrador Retriever my wife and I are planning to get. I will ask her what she thinks.

  Maybe it's where I have lived in the US (New York State and Florida), but I have never thought of Caleb as being anything close to a common name. In fact, I cannot think of anyone named Caleb.

  (Ok, ok, prove me wrong people. I'm sure someone here knows of a town in Nebraska or somewhere where every other boy is named Caleb. I'll accept the fact I am not "regional" enough now and get it over with).

  District convention to be held in assembly hall instead of stadium

  last night they announced that this summers district convention will be held at an assembly hall.. this is the first time i've seen this happen.

  there are a couple of congregations in the same hall here and they aren't going to the same ones.

  they are having multiple dates.. the hall they are going to use can only hold 1500 people max.. just wondering if maybe they just couldnt get anything bigger this year or if the falling numbers are playing a part in this decision.

  Good point. I know of two couples that attended the international convention in Atlanta this year (2019). It was in the Mercedes Benz (Atlanta Falcons Football) Stadium. It holds about 70,000 plus people. They said the attendance with about low-mid 40's and the upper deck was completely closed off. But everyone seemed pleased since that was about the number they were expecting.

  Some posters here had mentioned that they were actually closer to Atlanta but were assigned to Birmingham, Alabama instead.

  It just seems strange to me that if you want to go through all the steps and a ton of work in renting a facility of that size and then not assign enough congregations to fill it up, then what is the purpose of doing it in the first place? Is it just to say that we had an international convention there? Does the venue charge that much more for opening up the upper deck?

  With the Society so focused on $$$, from a financial standpoint, it doesn't make a lot of sense to me.

  Can you just imagine if one of Trump's kids had been shown to have dressed up in the same way? It would be on CNN 24x7 for weeks, endlessly, and the word "RACIST" would be on the chyron every time.

  I totally agree. I really never understood this whole issue and probably never will. We have the "Congressional Black Caucus" composed of most of the black members of Congress here in the US. If someone tried to make a "Congressional White Caucus", I think the shit would hit the fan and the person would be considered a racist.

  We have the NAACP here in the US, the "National Association for the Advancement of Colored People". I can't imagine if someone tried to create an NAAWP, the "National Association for the Advancement of White People."

  But when you tell me ...

  Don't pretend it's not a big issue, it just highlights that you don't truly care about principles, like most leftists you don't really have many.

  Are you referring to some of my personal comments or posts? Do you consider a person like myself, a self-proclaimed moderate, to lack principals like "most other leftists?"

  In my lifetime, speaking of Republicans, I would consider Nixon and Trump as the lying pond scum of the earth. I would consider Reagan, George Bush the elder and George W. Bush to be good, honorable men. I consider other people (Republicans) such as Mitt Romney, Colin Powell and especially John McCain to be very honorable, capable leaders. Do I agree with everything they said or did, no. Just as I see very flawed personalities in both of the Clintons.

  If I am considered a "leftist" by calling Trump pond scum by his berating a war hero (John McCain) who served years in a Vietnam prison, lost use of his arms, could have avoided serving entirely due to his father in the Air Force, didn't accept release from prison without his fellow prisoners being released also ... and ....and .... having this man we call the president berating him for having been captured when his fighter plane was shot down ... hiding McCain's name on the military ship dedicated in his honor when Trump visited Hawaii, saying McCain wasn't a hero but "I prefer people who don't get captured" ... and then, slick Donald avoids military service by using his family ties and gets a doctor to claim that his foot really hurts ... yea, ok.

  I get it. I guess I am guilty. I am a liberal without principles.

  I have a relative in the hospitality business (books conventions and groups for large hotels and facilities). I never really understood before talking to her about how much time, money and effort goes into booking a site for something like a Regional Convention or the like. The logistics of making it all happen in an orderly way is much greater than most people think. That is why there are people who do this for a living and get paid a lot to do it well.

  And the Society tends to want things done "their way" instead of more involvement by professionals to save some money. Depending on the location, it can involve various types of insurances, traffic permits, parking issues, security, facilities setup and dismantling, negotiations with unions for work to be done by volunteers instead of union employees, etc, etc, etc. A lot more behind the scenes stuff than most people realize.

  In many cases, it really does make sense to use a building that may otherwise be empty instead of going elsewhere. Yes, there is some wear and tear on it but the net cost is typically lower than renting a commercial building. And being in one of your own buildings cuts down on a lot of the red tape and scheduling requirements that come with a commercial building.

  Other than the visual impact of being in a large convention with thousands of others, the smaller ones are a lot easier to control and manage and be cost effective.

  I honestly don't get the whole black-face, brown-face issue.

  If Trudeau was black, put on white-face and went to a party with a lot of other black people there, what would have been the result?

  If a guy dresses up as a woman (drag) and goes to a party, is that offensive to women?

  Maybe worse yet, if a guy goes to a party in drag AND black-face, is that offending all blacks plus all women?

  That gives me an idea for a new app ... just plug in the variables and see who you are potentially offending (you heard it first here!)
