Strange things that the rumor-mills will produce when primed by the society. One conversation that I was privy to was between an elder and his wife. On the return trip from a circuit assembly I had the chance to ride with an elders family. I was a lad about to enter my teens so I guess the conversation was less guarded while traveling. The topic came up why Franz had been disfellowshipped, by the elder’s wife. In answer to the question it was stated that a conflict had ensued after he had requested to use the Watchtower and Awake mailing lists for a list of potential customers for an insurance business. The result of not taking no for an answer had resulted in being tossed out on his arse, so to speak. As a kid there was no way to confirm, refute or even research what I had overheard while quietly riding with the elder’s family.
MPO is that is was simply rumor. But, indicative of what kind of rumors can perpetuate when the facts are covered up.

Ray Franz df'd , what did the society say ??????
by run dont walk ini remember vaguely, well all hell broke loose in the late 70's regarding, ray franz being df'd, and the witch hunt at bethel.
i was just a little kid at the time, and didn't pay much attention.. i know ray's point of view, from what i've read on this board, and also ordered myself his book "crisis of conscience"(should be a good read).
i think back now, i remember the event happening, and the speaker talking about it at our circuit assembly, but i don't recall the reasons (bs) he gave.

Letter Read Last Night
by Intuit39 inhey bro, i just thought it may interest you to know that they read a letter last night describing how they need to build a new printing facility up at patterson that will be the size of two assembly halls.
they will be getting all new printing machines to be shipped from all over the world, and they will need many volunteers for the project to be completed by january 2004. and we should all realize that this is going to be at a tremendous cost, the buildings alone should cost about 60,000,000 dollars.
please start praying about what we can do, yada, yada, yada.

Same old stuff different decade.
Back in 1988 or 1989 there was a special assembly given in Corvallis that I attended. The topic was why they had to upgrade from the old lead plate machines to new offset type printing presses. I was baffled as to why there was no head scratching why the need for new presses with the end sooooooo close. Also part of the talk included a presentation of the new MIPs that allowed them to print other language characters much easier. The point was made that they had the patent on this technology and were sharing it freely with other printing companies.
Did a bit of reasearch and they didn't hold the patent. What had happened is someone possibly had copied the methodology used in creating fonts for the new graphical user interfaces. I was shocked how blatent the misrepresentation but was swallowed whole by most in attendance. Alas I wandered off the topic.
Simply put same old crap, different decade, and btw the end is so very near you should put your life on hold.

Why no JW charitable activities?

how do they justify never taking an active, or at least organized, role in alleviating suffering--even of their own members?

Just a shot in the dark.
But it is easier to isolate (read control) a person if the beings outside the good associations (control group) are dehumanized. The paradox of helping, caring for, or showing concern for a group that will be nothing but rotting meat for the birds (read could come at any time) would start the good association (read control group members) thinking of the outsied population as human beings with needs like theirs.

Strange Memories..
by breal inabout 6 or 7 years ago after being df'd and shunned by family and friends for so many years.. i got to thinking that perhaps if i tried to get reinstated.
not entirely sure that i really wanted to or if it was simply an idea to do this and then just did a slow fade (if that is really possible) - then i would be able to be around my family and friends like old times again.
i even attended a few meetings in the new city i had moved to.

Welcome breal,
I have lived through alot of the same thing you have experienced. Elders not caring enough to check up yearly to see what my heart condition was. The company I worked for had me travelling around the country, so going to meeting when away and having to go through the don't talk to me I'm unclean in each new town. But, knowing what you and I know now has made us stronger and hopefully wiser.
May your experience here be healing and interesting.

An epiphany, and prelude to other thoughts
by onacruse inwell, this is being a remarkable couple of weeks for me; one of those moments i'll remember for the rest of my life.
not to be melodramatic, but i think "epiphany" best describes what i'm experiencing.. a little history: i was born and raised a jw, bethel-bound at 8, baptized at 10. always a book-worm, liked to study math, science, and old wts publications (what a combo lol).
when i wasn't vacation pioneering (as it was called then), i spent my summers in my room, frequently reading for 16 hours at a stretch.
