  IRIDOLOGY- The Diagnostic Study Of The Iris---What Did You Think?

  in many of the congregations, the study of iridology was practiced.

  scores of "sick" people would have "parties" where they would come and get their eyes "read".

  My SIL , an devout jw, has been treated by several holistic type of practiciners (sp?). Her latest has claimed to detect her cancer by running her hands over her and detecting the negative energy that the cancer emits from her body. She said her holistic chiropractor confirmed the diagnosis. She was put on a very strict diet regime, complete with weekly colonics (coffee I think). My sister says that for now the cancer is in remission. She has never been to a regular doctor to confirm or deny the cancer. Now she is going somewhere in So. California where she will put her hands on a computer of some sort, as a means of obtaining energy to heal her even further. I have a hard time believing that any of these type of practices are legit and they sound a bit voodoo-ish to me. For now I'll stick to conventional methods of medicinal treatment.

  Great book. I'm in the process of reading it. I had to call my mom and tell her about it as well. There are so many things that I can relate too. If you haven't read it yet, do so. It's a much easier read than Crises of Conscience.

  Did You Really Understand What You Were Getting Into When You Got Baptized?

  the majority of people who become jehovah's witnesses, really have no idea what they've gotten themselves into.

  did you truly understand those baptismal vows that you made?

  There were two reasons why I got baptized at the age of 16. One, was fear of dying at Armageddon since I was under the impression that if you weren't baptized and were considered of an age that you were accountable for your own self you were doomed! Two, because my girlfriend was getting baptized and she talked me into it.

  I wasn't mature enough to reason anything else.

  2 Watchtower rules that I obeyed when I left

  1) remember the watchtower suggested that if we were a member of any religious order before we became jws we should send them (the churches) a little note to request our names be taken of their false religious member list?

  i certainly obeyed that request when i left and sent a note to the watchtower asking my name be taken off their false religious member list.

  then they sent the elders to tell me what an insult it was for me to request this.

  I like your thinking Brummie. I didn't send them a letter although by now I guess they figure I'm out of it since I have proudly displayed my flag outside for all to see, along with my Christmas decorations. My brother-in-law who is still in drives by from time to time and attends the same congregation I was attending has probably reported me for all of the sinful things I do.

  As for the literature, I had them stored in boxes in the garage for a few years. My husband would give a silent or sometimes loud curse everytime he stubbed his toe on them or tried to move them. I finally got brave and decided to throw them away. It took several weeks of garbage days to throw them all away but I was sure relieved they were gone.

  At hospitals, etc, where ever I encounter them, I make sure the literature gets filed away in the round file.

  Mother nature out of control

  I was born in No. California so I was here for the big earthquake in San Francisco....actually it was in the Santa Cruz mountains, but not many people know where they are, so it's easier to say San Francisco, a more recognizable place.

  Most people are scared of earthquakes. They can startle you, but it's rare that they do damage.

  just had a bethel flashback(tm) and thought i would share.

  it was lunch time and everyone was at their table getting ready to eat when a new guy sits down at the end of the table.

  i didn't know him so i thought i would be friendly and chat a bit.

  Kind of reminds me of most the District and Circuit overseers that used to visit the congregations. They were some of the most pompous men I have ever seen. They would come into town in their big fancy cars and sit in the front of the hall, being fawned over by the sisters in the congregation making them special meals.....used to make me sick.

  The Awakening...

  wish we all came with these 'directions' attached, at a young age...if i had known this all as a child...

  you learn that people don't always say what they mean or mean what they.

  in the process a sense of safety and security is born of self-reliance.

  This came at a time when my new years resolution is to make a concerted effort to find out who I really am. I'm turning the big 5-0 this year and I think it's about time I awakened from the cacoon that I have been hiding in for all of these years. I am learning there are things I really like about myself and other things that definately need to change. I'm copying this and posting it on my bulletin board in my office. It's just the right thing to help me on my journey.

  For those of you raise in the "truth" a Question

  i myself was raised in the "truth" til i was df'd at the age of 21. i have often wondered that if i were allowed to grow up just as every other child did in the u.s. would i have been interested in looking at the organization and taking interest?

  do any of you think and wonder the same thing?

  Even though I was raised a jw I don't think I would describe myself as a religious person, spiritual yes, but religious no. It's always been easy for me to turn sales people away and their coming to the door would have appeared to me as a salesperson wanting to sell me something. I don't think I would have been easily duped.

  BTW, Hi, this is my first post here. I've been a reader for a while. I finally decided to jump in and post a response.
