Personally I don't think he looks like a bastard, just an old guy. But I suggest you type "cardinal ratzinger" into google and see what sort of stuff he's written. He's hardline and not known for his flexibility and a great believer in absolute truth. Maybe he will open the church to debate, engage in dialogue with other faiths, but I greatly doubt it.
He's not going to be the Pope to welcome women, homosexuals or married priests into the church. Hopefully this pontificate will be shorter than the last.

I agree Pleasuredome, while the overseas territories are under UK sovereignty, they are not part of the United Kingdom of Great Britain & Northern Ireland. I guess the problem arises because we still sometimes abreviate that full title to GB when it's more accurately UK.

Great Britain became a common term for England Scotland and Wales when the Scottish and English crowns were united (by James VI 1606?) , becoming the Kingdom of Great Britain in 1707 when the parliaments became united. It wasn't until 1801 with a further act of union that it became the United Kingdom of Great Britain & Ireland, which lasted until 1922 when the Republic of Ireland separated apart from Ulster, forming (in 1927) the present United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. It would be technically inaccurate to describe the Irish (north or south) as being from Great Britain, but for historical reasons Protestants from Northern Ireland will commonly describe themselves as being British.
Where the Manx and Channel Islander's fit in, is beyond me.
British Isles however encompases the whole archipeligo. Confusing?

I think you'll find that few of us call ourselves Brits. Maybe some English and Nothern Irish unionists.
I'm Scottish and I'm from the UK.
edited to add: having discussed it with my Northern Irish partner, he'd call himself British, but we agree that Brits is what other nationals would call people from the UK.

I was fond of discussing how everyone would cope with the complete collapse of our western way of life - how we'd do without power and plastics for instance. They couldn't concieve the industrial proccesses we rely on for their production ceasing, and were convinced that J would miraculously keep the power stations burning, planes flying, and factories churning etc. They were too busy imagining how they'd furnish their lovely homes to think about the basics we rely on. It used to make some really p*ssed off that I'd suggest that life in the new system wasn't going to be immediately peachy.
The other topic that was never popular was that attraction between (adult) siblings was natural. The only reason it was wrong was imperfect genes, and if it was ok for Adam&Eve's kids, it would by natural for a brother to fancy his sister as in perfection sibling marriage would be permitted. That one almost got me punched.
