  an ever growing number of witnesses would like to leave the organization - but how?

  you may have an extended family "in the truth".. all your "friends" ( and that word "friends" deserves to be put in quotes ) may be "in the truth".

  you may not be in any position to make.

  My take would be:

  Start making friends elsewhere.

  Just stop attending meetings but offer no explanation beyond doubts.

  Don't accept more than one shepherding visit.

  Don't confide or even hang out with old Witness friends.

  Make sure you're not seen smoking, attending another church or making out with someone for at least the next year.

  Yes this will be difficult for JW family members but the ones that can't handle it will cut you off if you do the long term slow fade anyway, or if you move away and stop attending meetings.

  Witnesses train their members to waive the right to privacy (eg. elders prying into the bedroom and now HLC reading your medical records). Reclaim it. Explanations and personal decisions are yours, not a corporations.

  I feel I should point out that the kilt as worn today, and the rig that goes with it, is essentially a nineteenth century confection so the idea that it's what your ancestors wore is a bit of a misnomer. It's thanks to Sir Walter Scott and the Victorian romance with the Highlands that the prissy wee kilt became fashionable. It owes more to the aristocracy, ninteenth century tourism and English tailors than the Highlands.

  If your ancestors were Highlanders they may have worn belted plaid (sorry Slugga, it's not an American term), which was a long piece of material wrapped round the waist and thrown over the shoulder, held together by a belt. Pretty primitive but definitely more authentic. While Braveheart may have many inaccuracies, Mel Gibson's clothing is correct.

  We had a fire and brimstone C.O. prior to '75 who had everyone ready to flea to the Pentland Hills that surround Edinburgh. My parents weren't the sort to cash in all their chips (unlike some) but we did stockpile food (lentils for some reason) and my mother bought a sheepskin coat in case the big A came in winter.

  '75 came and went, the lentils became soup, the coat went out of fashion and the C.O. died without seeing the paradise earth.

  The programme is a good idea, but Dawkins is not the best man to deliver it. He's not the only atheist out there.

  
  My vote goes to Abaddon or FunkyDerek.

  Well as FD admits to getting similarly flush faced with frustration when faced with believers irrationality, I'll have to vote for Abaddon but preferably after a toke on a slightly less verbose day.

  I've been to a couple of Dawkins debates and as usual, although I agree with him, his manner is off puting. He somehow managed to look continually huffy in last nights programme. The extremists he met hung themselves with their own words without requiring his ascerbic remarks.

  The programme is a good idea, but Dawkins is not the best man to deliver it. He's not the only atheist out there.

  i've just got back from the watchnight service, and what a crowd were there.

  there must have been easily well over 400 people.

  the town hall was packed upstairs and down.

  Lightweight that I am, I only managed the early evening carol service at St Giles - great venue, superb organist but a little let down by the plastic baby Jesus. 3 ex dubs singing our merry hearts out was a sight to behold. The rest of the evening was overtaken by white russians which prevented me from attending the midnight mass.

  I'm with the Hamster.

  I put your dilemma to a friend that works with victims of abuse and she said that for you to report the case to the police without the victims knowledge or consent could be potentially damaging to them. Given poor conviction rates the court experience can be traumatising and she feels the decision to report lies with the victims.

  I have to ask... if you're such a laid-back guy, how did you get to be an elder at 20? You normally have to be a fascist little zealot to achieve that so young!
