  What’s the big deal with birthday cake?

  how strict were the jehovah’s witnesses you knew about birthday cake?

  i knew a girl who saw a few pieces of cake in the break room at her work, and ate a peice, then found out later that it was left over birthday cake.

  she felt so guilty and was scared about a bad impression she left on her work mates.

  When I was still on speaking terms with my brother I left a cake with candles in his house for his 40th, while he was at the meeting. He wouldn’t light the candles but he ate all the cake. He was the PO.

  How do you feel about your JW childhood?

  i was 5 years old when my mother was baptised.

  we went from celebrating xmas to no presents or decorations.

  we would still go to my unbelieving aunty's house on xmas day, all of my cousins would be playing with their new toys and would wonder why i didn't have any.

  I was born in and had a really good childhood, full of love and rich in experience, rarely felt I was missing out and secure enough not to feel the need to always fit in. Ironically it was probably the security of my upbringing that helped me handle the total rejection I experienced when I left as an adult.

  But appreciate a lot of peers had grim childhoods.

  Possible spam or malware on forum?

  i willl try to describe this accurately and will provde more detail if its helpful, but recently the forum has been giving me a popup on my phone.

  i have cleared the cashe, cookies and saved websites bit it still happens fairly often, at least once every 3 threads i click on.

  Do you like to experiment when cooking?

  just lately i've become weary of following recipes in books or online.

  recently when on holiday in the lake district i wanted to make pasta with a tomato and cheese sauce but the only interesting cheese they had at the local store was a somerset brie.

  i discovered when peeled of its skin and tossed in with tomatoes and pasta it melts beautifully and tasted amazing.

  I’m mainly cooking from Ottolenghi and Ghayour’s recipes atm, Middle Eastern, god they’re good.

  Also keep making an aubergine larb which I can’t eat enough of.

  Advice on my JW Mother

  i need the advice of those of you who are exjw's on what to do about my still in mother.

  briefly, here's the situation: i am a born-in, never got baptised (thank the fsm), became an athiest about 2015 but haven't come out to anyone but my wife and some trusted friends.

  my mother was raised in the society and is a true believer, but was never as strict about it as some parents are when i was growing up.

  I’m not dfed but the relationship with my mother was fraught, tense and one sided and depressed us both. Neither of us have contacted each other in 2 years and it’s much healthier for me. It’s sad but I find loss easier to live with than toxicity.

  But only you can decide what’s best in your situation.

  1969 Awake on Education - A Sore Spot for Me

  my father would have started college 49 years ago this week.

  about three months earlier, the week he graduated high school, the awake!

  magazine came out with some very clear direction to teenagers.

  I became an elder the same month I started university, this was around 2000. The CO told the elders my decision to go to uni was not an impediment. I immediately became school overseer but 8 months later I cracked, resigned and stopped going to meetings.

  So the 1969 Awake had no legacy for me but my experience probably became proof that Uni was bad for your faith (although my faith was fake).

  Just saw the film, "Apostasy"

  it was a very good film but not fully what i was expecting.

  a jw could even watch it, i don't think the title fit the movie.

  there was absolutely nothing about apostasy, nor do i recall the word even being mentioned.
