Well I finally resigned as an elder - Phew.
by The Scotsman inthats right, about 2 weeks ago i confronted the po and told him i just could not do it anymore.. i genuinely have been under alot of pressure recently with my work so i used this as the pitch.
he was not happy but i received little resistance, which suited me.
i handed him my letter last week before i went on holiday.. i have to say it is a great weight off my shoulders, no book study, meetings for ministry, talks, public talks etc etc.. i will no doubt be the subject of local congregation gossip!

homosexuals and JWs
by solidergirl ini have no problem being around gay people.
but bring it up a car group and omg its like the number 1 sin in the world.
it got to point where i wanted to stand up for them.

I don't find the current WT stance on homosexuality to be particularly hatefilled, in fact if i recall correctly it was sympathetic in a WT kind of way - pitying. In fact I recall the delighted response of one gayJW messageboard I read. Nonetheless I think that the view that homosexuality is a sin legitamises some of the members' hate for homosexuals.
While some of my family wont associate at all with me they have as their best friend a gay, but celibate, JW who spent a number of years out (Sept 11th brought him back, ugh!). Witnesses are often pretty far behind the times on social issues (understatement) and while I don't ever imagine they'll change their view on homosexuality I think that car groups will become less inclined to spout hate as more gay witnesses come out.

Not sure I like The Scotsman posting such fluff. people might think it's me and think i've become a lightweight. As long as you keep it gay that's fine.

Count me in,
BTW, the edinburgh festival is scheduled to take place in june next year, Crumpet your right it is normally August, but theyre changing it next year.
Shell
The International Festival is scheduled to take place in August as usual. The film festival's rescheduled to June but it's small.
And I'll turn up if there's food and booze involved (and an opportunity to meet Crumpet) I had lunch in the Witchery on Saturday, good but not fabulous enough for me darling. edited to add: Glasgow is the centre of the universe like a black hole is. -

List Reasons Why YOU Would NEVER Go Back To The "Truth"
by minimus ini recently saw my jw brother and sil and listened to them talk about poor sister sick(o) who has been diagnosed with major mental problems.
she went to the doctor's and the doctor supposedly began to berate her out of the blue because she is a jehovah's witness.
now the family wants to have the doctor formally rebuked for his so called "discriminatory comments".

Because they'd make me have a kingdom hall wedding and I prefer having sex with my boyfriend out of wedlock.

Radical Apostasy v Liberal Apostasy
by diamondblue1974 inin the wake of the 'dannygate' issue it made me think about the impact of apostasy and it various forms and on some level how it equates to the feminist movement and its development over the years.. initially, the radical feminist movement were and are the typical man hating, bra burning cross section who undoubtedly moved womens rights foward significantly and to some degree still do.
without the radical feminist movement, the likelihood of the liberal and more balanced feminist movements ever existing would have been uncertain if not improbable.
so indirectly the feminist movement owes a lot to those radicals who were out there burning bra's and linching men (i was joking about the last bit).

but I will expose religions that are emotionally destructive to people.
JG, therein lies a problem, some of us might feel that the very nature of religion is emotionally destructive. Would us picketing your church make you stop and think?

JG, I'm aware you do and if it's working for you pal, go for it.

It depends on your reason for leaving. If it's theological and you've found the 'Truth' elsewhere is makes sense to picket (like they used to do themselves). If it's sociological, because you've been ill treated in some way, I don't think the anger route is very productive either in helping yourself or helping others leave. They'll blame your anger on the actions of imperfect men, not the Faith itself, and you'll burn yourself nursing the wrath.
Knowledge and disappointment are the key to diluting the Witnesses faith. And dilution is all i expect as the collapse of the religion is a ridiculously unobtainable goal. It's not the wackiest or most harmful out there.
