Welcome to the forum, Tech. Check out www.freeminds.org if you get a chance, it's a real eye-opener about the society... And also, "awakening of a jehovah's witness" by Diane Wilson is a good read. Looking forward to hearing what you have to say!

One foot in and one foot out.
by tech 597 ini have to say that at one time i wouldn't even consider reading material at a discussion group like this one.
but in the last two years, discussion groups like this one have been indispensable to my dealing with a very personal crisis of faith, and i want to thank the brave and loving persons who sponsor sites like this, and the brave and loving persons who participate in them.
like many here, i was raised as one of jehovah's witnesses and never questioned the validity of the wbts view.

At what age did you join the Witnesses?
by JH in.
at what age would a person have to be to join the witnesses and not suffer too much?.
if they are children, it robs their youth.. if they join in the teens, they won't get a decent education.. if they join at 20 years old, they will have to marry a witness.. if they join at 30, i guess that would be less destructive because they already are married, have children, have a house, an education and a job.. at what age did you join, and how did it affect you?

JH, not true I joined at 17, and I'm about to graduate college at 22. They changed the policy on college right about when I joined, but I would've disobeyed anyway (grins)

ugh....no more Bob :(
by LP_gurl inhad a good phone convo with bob tonite.
well i guess it depends on your definition of good but anyways.
he spewed for an hour straight about why we can't talk anymore and that unless i become a witness, we can no longer have any contact.

LP, you just made the best decision of your life.
If you stick around on here, you'll read stories of people who made that mistake, and ended up wasting a third of their lives in a miserable relationship... sure, you have the person, but the baggage is a Kingdom hall, a set of strict dogmatic rules, and a lot of other shit too lengthy to go into detail over. I'm 21 and my best friend just did that for a sister... he's wrecking his life. .. So good for you. Cry, get it out of you, and then find a guy who will appreciate you for who you are and never ask you to change. ^_^ You're awesome and strong, girl! ***MAJOR APPLAUSE***

Dub Fads
by In_between_days inwhen you were a jw, did you witness a rather large enthusiasm from your congregation for passing fads?
what i mean is, one dub would start something and everyone would join in?
this was especially prevelant with the women of the congregations.. for instance, for a while every female dub was undertaking this strange diet where they basically drink this really odd and particularly disturbing looking mushroom that they kept in their fridge.

Raquetball in my congregation became a big fad... i took a class and then got shunned because it was all'guys that played the sport... and so they thought I was fooling around... sheesh, riiight.
Also, glitter make-up for sisters, and new haircuts..

Mystery, *smiles* A toast to you, friend! ^_^ I was absolutely touched by your post. My roommate was reading over my shoulder and she said "You know, that person's son will probably remember that for the rest of his life." So I thought I'd say that back at'cha. Yeah, marinated mushrooms are the BEST! and my sandwich is delish, too. ^_^

Are Jehovah's Witnesses A Stupid People???
by minimus injw's are supposed to be the cleanest, the happiest and the most honest people on earth.
in reality, do you think that they are amongst the most stupid people on earth??
?

Minimus,
I don't think they are stupid people... just... Naive. I mean, each of us has an element of naiviety (sp?) to us... and being controlled appeals at one point, I guess. i don't think they are stupid, though... I know some JWs who scored 1600 on the SAT, 1460, etc. They're booksmart but brainwashed.

...First, I drove to the grocery store, bought a six pack of Smirnoff Triple Black and a Grecian Delight Deli Sandwich, some watermelon, and some marinated Mushrooms and Artichoke hearts.
...Then, I drove to Hollywood Video and rented Lord of the Rings for my PS2, The Crew, and Far from Heaven, and then I walked out to my car, popped in Eminem's cd and played "WITHOUT ME" really loud with a lot of base (I drive a shiny new red sportscar), drove past my old KH, FLIPPED THEM OFF WITH THE MUSIC BLARING... and yes, they saw me...
...Then I drove home, parked, threw back a few beers and I'm buzzzzzzzzzzzzzzed. ^_^ Watchin' a movie, and not carin'. I feel good. ^_^
..and soon, I'll get laid. So, today is a gooooood day

Back from the Memorial
by ScoobySnax inwell like i say, just got back from the memorial, have been going most years, but this year i went by chance (knew it was roughly at 7pm at the nearest kh) to my old congregation that i grew up in.
i didn't find the "evil" people spoke of here on this forum, or those too stupid to see.
all i did see was people i hadn't seen in years, and let me tell you, what lovely people they were.
-
NaruNaruChan
ScoobySnax,
Look, I dont wanna argue with your logic... but before you get too offended by what people say on here... realize that not just a few, but over a million XJWs have experienced this LOVE BOMBING... or they were raised in that environment. We all went through it, we all got baptized or didn't, and we all either DF'ed, DA'ed or faded out.. and lost a lot more.. these so called "loving people" may be loving, hell, none of us were with you... but none of us want you to go back, and that's why you get a harsh response from XJWS about active ones.. because they were nice only because you were there... if you spoke about anything other than what they believe, the niceness fades quicker than clothes washed in cheap detergent.
Most people on here are negative because they are victims of terrible terrible things... abuse both mental and physical, shunning (which is a terrible form of abuse), etc. Some people have been alienated from their family and friends for decades because of this religion, so using the words "Loving" and "JWS" in the same sentence heats the temper.
IMHO, Glad you had a good time. Just remember the love bombing and be careful listening to them. Was it good to see old friends?
PS, if I came off as condescending I'm sorry. I had a few beers. ^_~ You know how we apostates like to ring in the memorial. Woo hoo Smirnoff Triple Black! ^_~
