Hi!
In print it wasn't nearly as much of a "sure thing" as 1925 but it was certainly hyped on the platform! I still remember the circuit overseer doing a countdown to 1975 during his visits: "Brothers' it's only 66 months till 1975!! Speed it up, people!" If you want to see the stuff in print see the book "Life Everlasting in Freedom of the Sons of God" pages 26-35 and the August 15,1968 Watchtower page 494 "Why are you Looking Forward to 1975" for starters.

Just how hyped was 1975?
by MuadDib inaight.
i was raised in the jws, but i'm still young (22) and all my life what i've been told is that the society never really promoted 1975 as the definitive year for the coming of armageddon.
what i was always told is that some overzealous witnesses took certain things out of context and developed a very extreme reaction - ie selling their houses, quitting their jobs, dropping out of school, etc.

Ozzie
I remember that!
"I've found Assembly Heaven!" Remember, he ordered a beer! Too bad he didn't return to his seat with it, that would have raised a few eyebrows.

9. Single sisters on "bowl patrol" trying to impress the young studs
Yep, definitely this one. The only reason the young sisters are there is to impress the future CO's and DO's!
Hey Unclebruce, The reason you can't do any fancy stuff is probably because of your browser. Use Internet Explorer as your browser By the way unc, a long time ago you wrote a story on the old H2O board about spending the day at the District Convention. It was the funniest thing I've read in a long time. I saved it on CD-ROM. With your permission I'd like to repost it here on this board.
Thanks

Do You Keep Your Old JW Books?
by Clam inwhat have you done with your wts book collection?
have you sold them, burnt them, given them away or kept them as a memento?
the only one i kept was aid to bible understanding, which i still find helpful, even though there are errors, eg 607bc lol .

Not only have I kept my old books, I've even added to them! Books like the 1965 Watchtower bound volume (shows the impossibility of 607 BCE) The Finished Mystery (The Watchtower Society on acid) and Millions Now Living Will Never Die (Published in 1920, oops, I think they're all dead now) I'm still looking for the 1969 Awake! bound volume (Teenagers will never grow old in this system of things so don't go to college, Those teenagers are in their fifties now)and the 1934 Yearbook (proof that the WTS supported the Nazis) CyrusThePersian

Will the new system be uncrowded?
by M.J. ini was talking to an elder yesterday about how enjoyable it is to get away from civilization in remote wilderness areas, unlike the circus you see at places like yosemite natl.
park in california.
with dreamy eyes he mentioned how great it will be in the "new system", when "we can enjoy uncrowded conditions.".

Hi Here's another thought: Not only will the world be seriously overcrowded but remember that according to witness teaching, all the faithful survivors of Armageddon will be assigned to teach the resurrected ones the Troof. That means that every witness will have tens of thousands of eager Bible Students (sarcasm). Doesn't leave much time for restoring the paradise does it? CyrusThePersian

Hi!
Have a SUPER Happy Birthday!!!
Since it's your first birthday get a real decadent ultra-chocolate cake and put one candle on it for your first birthday.
Or better yet, make reservations at one of those restaurants where the wait staff sings "Happy Birthday" to people who ask for it, then arrange (somehow) to have your family and all their JW friends be there at the same time you are! That would be a great way to "out" yourself once and for all!
I've thought about doing that one myself...
HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!!

So who are we? And why are we here?
by MsMcDucket inare we someone's science project?
did two rocks collide and boom, ta-da, here's earth with people?
does our life have purpose?
-
CyrusThePersian
Hi!I'm with Nicolaou on this one. This life is all there is! Our purpose (aside from being gene replicating machines) is to enjoy our seventy or eighty years and maybe leave this place just a little bit better than we found it.
Just think, all of the unfertilized egg cells produced by the human female throughout her life represent potential lives that will never be lived. Billions of beings who will never get the chance that we have been given. We who are alive are the lucky winners of life's lottery!
I, for one, will continue to live my life as I see fit. Are there gods out there? If so, they seem to not give a damn about what we do. Despite the believer's endless devotion to their dieties, they still grow old and die just like the atheists. So I'll just leave them all alone and enjoy the life I have!

What one sentence could you say to a JW that would stick with them?
by AlmostAtheist inyou've probably heard sentences that stuck with you.
quotes, one-liners.
you hear them and they make so much sense or touch you so personally at the time that they become part of you.
-
CyrusThePersian
Hi! Not a sentence really, but a question."Can you prove, from the Bible, that Jesus chose the Bible Students to be his Faithful and Discreet Slave in 1919?" There's so much silliness in that question it will keep them "researching" for days! They'll have to figure out the wacko 1914 "chronology", the identity of the faithful and discreet slave (incuding who the Bible Students thought the FDS was back in 1919) and how they deduce that Jesus made some sort of "inspection tour" of the world's religions before choosing the total nutjob Bible Students to be his spokesmen on Earth. Did you read ..........THAT........book...............
by vitty in.
.............. coc, of course.
when you were still in the org, or when you had already left.. i read it when i was still in and it had a profound effect on me.. lets take a poll .
-
CyrusThePersian
Yes. I read it. It was back in the mid nineties I think, because I was having doubts about the 1914 generation change already (that was in Nov. 1995). I found it at the Zondervan book store when I went in there to buy a copy of the New International Version Bible for my library. I was an elder at the time. What I read shocked and amazed me. The Mexico-Malawi situation, 1975, the shabby treatment that Ray Franz received, being practically railroaded out of the organization. It suprised me, but it still rang true . Everything he wrote sounded familiar, like it could have happened in my congregation. I wanted to confront my fellow elders-tell them what I had learned, maybe save them if I could...but I didn't. I chickened out. I didn't want to get disfellowshipped. So I just...faded...away. This book is profound. Read it, I urge you. You will not regret it!
