Latest Watchtower study... Still discouraging higher education!!!

one of the paragraphs read that 'if in the area where you live you need higher education after you graduate, then the young person must speak with the parents in order to help them balance the schedule so that he/she doesn't neglect spiritual things'.

alright, i thought, that's a somewhat balanced point of view; i thought, good they're coming along with the times we live in.

To be fair, Doubtfully, if you were operating from a millenialist paradigm you would probably not be as concerned with higher education either. I mean, if the world's going to end why bother?

I started a window-cleaning business after high-school to pioneer. Looking back, I regret pioneering, but not starting my business. Although it is not something I want to do forevermore (but, of course, the JWs don't think they'll be cleaning windows very long either, right?) it has provided more money than most people think is possible to make in such work. I never, ever make less than $30 an hour. There are days where I can easily make $300 in seven or eight hours of work. That's not bad.

That being said, I now work a couple days a week window-cleaning to support my college education instead of pioneering. Nonetheless, it's important to keep in mind where the JWs are coming from. They don't do this sort of thing to slack off (well, some do I guess). Your statement to the effect that "everyone needs a college education" is simply wrong. Look at Bill Gates and Warren Buffet!

Well, by "traditional" and "literal" I'm refferring to such things as the verbal inspiration of the Bible, the literal account of the Adam/Eve, the Flood, the idea of the necessity of a ransom sacrifice to save us from sin, a real Devil, miracles, etc. I realize the JWs depart from the traditional, conservative conception of scripture in many ways. Nonetheless, I feel there are more similarities between fundamentalist, "Evangelical" Christians and JWs then there are differences. "Pups from the same bitch" is the phrase that has been used.

Yes, the changes to the Society would be so enormous and radical that they would not even be recognized today as in any way being JW. Think liberal Episcopaleans with a Zen flair.

Hmmm...hot pioneer chick, huh? Well, that does get me thinking. There was a very cute sister that I think liked me in the last hall I was at. She kind of looked like that girl from "A Beutiful Mind", what's her name? Jennifer Connely. But she was thoroughly brainwashed into the group. I just wouldn't be able to deal with that.

Now...if there was a double-lifer, hot JW girl who thorougly disbeleived it but wanted to stay in for her family....well, then I might have to pull a Second Coming (no pun intended) for her sake!

I can accept a "soft" Biblical hermeneutic. If viewed primarily metaphorically, the Bible can actually make a lot of sense. Not all parts, mind you.

I was thinking about this the other day in response to the question, "Am I coming back?" put forward by JW who called me (a former friend). I said that I would not answer that question since it would put her in an uncomfortable position. It did get me thinking,though -- under what circumstances would I go back to the Witnesses? Upon reflection I have come up with two possible routes for my return to Dubdom.

1) The Society radically changes both it's belief system and it's organizational structure. They would have to give up all literal/traditional interpretations of the Bible and be open to other religions.

2) I go insane.

That's it! Somehow I feel the second route is more likely than the first.

JWD ....the opium of the Ex ?

marx reckoned religion was the opium of the people, i'm no marx, but i reckon jwd has become the opium of the exjws.

it satisfies a need, gives one a purpose, feels someone with a greater sense of purpose, trys to give one a purpose and reason for being here, and very closely becomes a "religion" of sorts to many.

many here claim they stay to help others out of the wbts, where in fact i think they stay because it has become their new "opium" its a focal point they can meet with like minded individuals to further their own new "belief".

The funny thing is I've rarely had sexual dreams in my life. Strange, huh? Well, except that one time that I was dreaming about sex and I could actually FEEL it. I wish that happened more often.

Oh well.

I don't believe all dreams are significant, though. Some are just random and senseless; a churning of the brain for no apparrant reason. The WT/brother-in-law/father dream was just too much, though. I'm certain my unconscious was involved in manipulating the symbols.
