  Well thumbs up to the guy, it takes a strong man to admit that all his work has been error

  Just because he is now a deist does not mean that "all his work has been in error." That's illogical. Flew's work included much more than just a "Is there some sort of God, yes or no?" type of career. I mean, come on.

  As I mentioned in the other thread....I still like the outrageous hypothesis that WE are God -- WE being the collective consciousness (perhaps future) of humanity, a la the Omega Point that Pierre Teilhard de Chardin talked about.

  flower, if he was "just scared of dying" wouldn't you think he would have at least said he believed in an afterlife? Hell, I even know some atheists that believe in an afterlife!

  I think you're dismissing him (as have others at atheist boards) totally out of hand. Talk about closed-minded!

  upon a fine conversation with a good forum member last night i started to think about the meaning of the word spiritual.

  many people, including some agnostics and atheists, use this word with some regularity.

  "i'm not religious, but i am spiritual" is something even i have said.

  Put another way, if you didn't believe in the physical world (as some philosophical idealists and eastern cults do) would you describe anything as physical?

  Perhaps context is the key here. If AlanF, Six of Nine, Narkissos and I were hiking in the Himalayas and one of us said, "This is a real spiritual experience, isn't it?" we all would probably understand what he meant because we know the underlying worldview of each other. But the general public -- especially in America, especially in the "red states" -- might take it totally different.
