Atheists know more about the bible!
by Comatose ina newly minted atheist, she uses her youversion bible app to try to persuade people away from the christianity she grew up in.. .
i know of a lot of atheists who have come to their nonbelief by actually reading the bible rather than just the fluffy stories they choose to tell you about in church, she said.
reading the full story with all its contradictions and violence and sexism, it should make you think, is this really what i believe in?

How I recently handled JWs at my door
by Christian guy inthe jws stopped by my house a couple weeks ago on a saturday morning.
i knew that with others most likely waiting for them out in the car they probably did not then have much time to engage in any serious conversation.
so i let them talk while i feigned interest in what they had to say.

Although I wouldn't always agree with the statement that no true Christian would commit murder, it's not the same as the no true Scotsman fallacy.
A true scotsman is defined by nationality and gender and behaviour is irrelevant, if a group are at least somewhat defined by behaviours and someone who claims to be in it doesn't meet those behaviours it's fair for the majority to claim they are not a part of their group.
I.e. 'No true secular humanist is a racist' is not a fallacy imo.

JW Apolgist rant here...and confession.
by Julia Orwell ini really don't like people disparaging active jws on this site by calling them stupid, idiots, morons and that, and making out like they're willing puppets to the gb or cruel at heart.
or describing them like they're puke or as having no desire to learn or listen.. to you, all these things may be true.
we all have opinions and are entitled to them.

Most JW critics aren't like you though TD, at least off the Internet. My experience with JW critics were people who thought JWs don't believe in Jesus or were upset at JWs about the Trinity or something like that.
Some JWs thrive on those arguments. A lot of JWs never really face any serious challenges and are unduly confident.

Trying to overcome my homophobia.
by Julia Orwell ini had a music album by a gay guy before i was a jw and had no problem listening to it.
it's good music.
some of the lyrics are what you might call 'gay', that is there's some talk about boyfriends, gay bars, and queens and the intolerance the artist encountered as a gay man.

On an unrelated note, I like how positive you are Julia. It's always a pleasure to read your posts.

Do you have many gay friends Julia? The more you hang around with them (outside of work and as couples) the more you'll be purged of these feelings.

Persecuted Christians
by IMHO inchristians are the single most widely persecuted religious group in the world today.
1. christian churches around the world have set apart the month of november to remember and pray for the persecuted church, through the international day of prayer for the persecuted church (idop).. 2. according to the u.s. department of state, christians in more than 60 countries face persecution from their governments or surrounding neighbors simply because of their belief in christ.. 3. with the exception of four official state-controlled churches in pyongyang, christians in north korea face the risk of detention in the prison camps, severe torture and, in some cases, execution for practicing their religious beliefs.
north koreans suspected of having contact with south korean or other foreign missionaries in china, and those caught in possession of a bible, have been known to be executed.. 4. in syria, christians are increasingly becoming the target of violent attacks.

How is saying Christians provoke a lot of their own persecution different to saying gay people provoke their own persecution?
Bigotry is alive and well.

Is JW Baptism the Only Valid Baptism?
by Cold Steel inwhat is the watchtower bible and tract societys view on baptism?
is it absolutely essential that one be baptized to gain eternal life in gods kingdom?.
and can they tell you who you can and cant baptize?.
-
Laika
JWs believe baptism is essential for the anointed. Not necessarily for the great crowd, but they would question the salvation of someone who refused to do it.
Cold Steel, to be honest I don't quite understand where you're going with the rest of your post. Is there a Mormon angle to this that I've missed? How do the Mormons understand baptism and authority?

Don't we all have emotional connections to our beliefs?
Nobody likes to be treated like an idiot, or called a swine for that matter.

How will WTBTS turn growth around
by joe134cd ini know sometimes i can come across as an opologist.
i just can't seem to help myself, and i do apologize.
i had a thought on how could the wtbts turn their fortunes around to reducing the out flow, and getting a more positive growth of publishers, particularly in western lands.

They've already started focus on keeping their current members. Check the stats, they lose less members now then they did pre-internet.
