The Confederate Flag
by Simon inthe latest controversy over the confederate flag just sums up to me the state of dysfunction that exists in american society.. in summary: a white supremacist nutter shoots 9 black people dead in a church.
he's clearly inspired by the messages of others which the confederate flag is often a symbol of.. it seems like a no-brainer to remove it.
not only isn't it removed, it isn't even lowered at all as a mark of respect.. and of course now there are the people who want to defend their right to have it.

I agree with Simon! Take down the flag! -

"We Already Forgive Him" - What Does That Mean?
by cofty inthe children of one of yesterday's shooting have told the media that they have already forgiven the killer for what he did.. dylaan roof has not apologised for what he did.
he hates black people and probably regrets not killing even more.. what does it really mean to forgive?.
if the legal system asked the victims relatives what they want done next would they ask for dylaan to go free and unpunished?.

I tend to say I've 'forgiven' the JWs who cut me off, but as far as our friendships go, the forgiveness is pretty meaningless without their 'repentance'. That is, unless they recognise their treatment of me as wrong and take steps to reach out to me, they can never receive my forgiveness, but I am certainly open to this reconciliation should they ever want it.
Of course this is a much more extreme case, and I'm not going to speak on behalf of the families. I think letting go of anger and the need to exact vengeance are good things, but you can't have reconciliation with someone who wants to murder you, no matter how open you are to the possibility. -

How do we know they're not being authentic? Has anyone asked the children what they mean by forgiveness? -

Children of murdered Charleston minister have "already forgiven" their Mother's killer.
by nicolaou ini'm not judging these poor young people, if this is how they are coping with the trauma of losing their mum i can only wish them well.
i have to admit though that my jaw dropped when i first saw this interview, i couldn't square their reaction with what i understand as 'normal' human grief.. is this religiously motivated form of forgiveness a positive thing?
should i acknowledge this as something to be said in favour of religion?.

Flipper, I love you man, but you have to know that signing off your calls for violence with "peace out" is quite jarring. Maybe you should take some of your own advice? -

Why are JWs so against debate
by enigma1863 inif the jws follow proverbs 27:17 they should not be afraid of any tension or friction.. in order for iron to sharpen iron you need pressure, tension friction and a bit of heated debate..

What VI said. Even a 'born again' fundie would embarrass a JW in a debate, if they were prepared. -

I like her message to the Society:
"These [abuse victims] aren't apostates, these are people who have suffered from horrible, horrible crimes and had their lives completely wrecked... They're not out to destroy the organisation. This is a problem that needs to be dealt with."
Yes. With the Organisation money talks, let's hope this inspires a change. -

Guns. Well said Mr President, if only your countrymen had the same courage to consider changing course.
by nicolaou inive had to make statements like this too many times.
communities like this have had to endure tragedies like this too many times.
once again, communities [were harmed] because someone who wanted to inflict harm had no problem getting their hands on a gun.. lets be clear: at some point, we as a country will have to reckon with the fact that this type of mass violence does not happen in other advanced countries.

It's sad how the same people who loudly insist America is a 'christian nation' cannot let go of violence. "He who lives by the [gun] will die by the [gun]" -

Why is a mass shooting in a church worse than other mass shootings?
by undercover ini'll preface this by saying that i was horrified by the news of the shooting in charleston, a town that i visit quite frequently, and i know where the church is.
i don't mean to make light of the situation, but my question is serious, after having watched news pundits, politicians, neighbors, friends, express shock, horror and outrage over the events.. they, like me, were shocked by the school shootings, and the theater shootings, and other mass shootings.
but i sense a different shock, a different reaction, to this event.

They were following their faith by 'welcoming the stranger' into their community. There's something disturbing about how Dylann Roof used that welcome against them.
