  Hall baby to get blood transfusion over parents' objections from WSB-TV GAINESVILLE - A Hall County baby will receive a blood transfusion despite objections from the baby's parents. A judge has ordered doctors at Northeast Georgia Medical Center to perform the medical procedure on a premature infant despite the family's religious beliefs. "The evidence in the case shows that while it is not certain that the infant would die without the transfusion, that it is likely that he would die without (it)," said Senior Superior Court Judge John Girardeau. The child's parents are Jehovah's Witness and are against blood transfusions. Doctors say the procedure could save the baby's life. The parents' attorney says they will abide by the court order.

  CORPUS CHRISTI - Cases involving parents' rights to refuse medical treatment for their children based on religious beliefs are not all that uncommon. However, they don't normally involve potential life and death scenarios like Katie's.
  
  CPS takes kids from homes in cases of abuse or neglect. In this case, CPS believes it was a case of neglect. Katie's parents obviously disagree. Now, it's up to a judge to decide who knows what's best for Katie - her parents or the state. Anne Coover specializes in family law, and a while back had a case involving a young Jehovah's Witness that was very similar to the case of Katie Wernecke. Coover said the Jehovah's Witness lost the legal battle, and that historically, religion tends to take a back seat in court to what's medically necessary. Coover said, "Past cases tell us that the court is going to rule in the child's best interest. If there is a need for the child to be protected by the court, it's my experience and history that child will be protected."

  According to Texas law , "N eglect' includes failing to seek, obtain, or follow through with medical care for a child, with the failure resulting in or presenting a substantial risk of death, disfigurement, or bodily injury..." A Child Protective Services spokeswoman claims that's why they took Katie. "We felt the child was not getting the treatment she deserved. Our role is to protect children," said Mary Walker. Katie's family argues both points, claiming their beliefs allow only Katie's mother to give a blood transfusion, and that doctors are wrong about her need for radiation. If this week's diagnosis by a new doctor indicates Katie is not in danger, a judge will have to decide whose medical opinion matters most.

  "This doctor may have an opinion that says black, and the other doctor has an opinion that's white. And so the judge has to rely on which opinion has more credibility, more validity, and that he can rely on," Coover said. Coover and Child Protective Services both said that doctor's opinions are heavily relied upon in cases like this. No one will know the results of Tuesday's examination in Houston, and in fact, neither does Katie's father.

  The hearing is scheduled for next Wednesday.

  Man impersonates Mayombo, gets job

  KAMPALA THE Chieftaincy of Military Intelligence (CMI) has arrested an impersonator of CMI boss Col. Nobel Mayombo and conning people including MPs of their money. Mr Mike Mugarura, a Senior Six leaver from Ntare School in Mbarara, was arrested in Fort Portal last week. The Joint Anti-terrorism Taskforce (Jat) spokesman, Capt. Joseph Tumusiime, paraded Mugarura before the press yesterday and warned the public against security and State House impersonators. He said in case of suspicion, the public should call the Police on 999 or hotlines 041-344 908, 041-344 907, 041-344 462, 041-349 460, 041-342 6913 and 041-349 461. Tumusiime said cases of peddling 'black' dollars are also up. He said about six people had been conned of more than $90, 000 (Shs120 million) in the past two weeks. Mugarura told the press that he impersonated Col. Mayombo and called the Chief Accountant of the Ministry of Works in Fort Portal, Mr Fred Waiswa, to give "Mayombo's son" (Mugarura) a job. He said Waiswa secured for him a job as a laboratory attendant. However, Mugarura left the job after a month and went to Ibanda. Whenever Waiswa would call to ask about Mugarura's whereabouts, Mugarura would change his voice to sound like Mayombo. He would tell Waiswa that Mugarura had some problems. But when Waiswa went to Mbarara for a Jehovah's Witness conference, he met Mugurura at the same function. He took him back to Fort Portal and kept him at his home. He also paid him his salary of Shs145,000. Whenever, Waiswa would call 'Mayombo' to tell him about his 'son', Mugarura, who had put his telephone in vibration, would sneak out to a secret place to answer the call and he would thank him for taking care of his son.
