>> The worldy "birthday celebration," however, is not done for the same purpose; and primarily focuses on the "fun" aspect of the occasion.
Birthday celebrations are fun, and that's why they're bad? I know that's not what you really mean to use as a defense. Why are fun bday celebrations bad, but fun baby showers are ok?Dave
The Watchtower's condoning baby showers appears to be sound. To me there is a difference between a a "Baby Shower" as practiced by the world, and that of a baby shower as practiced in a Christian way. The latter, of course, would have a two-fold purpose: 1) to help with the material provisions for the upcoming child. 2) and there is the spiritual aspect, where the Creator of life is taken into account. The manner in which a Christian would deal with having a baby shower would put emphasis on the sacredness of life. The worldy "Baby Shower," however, has no "spiritual aspect" to it, and primarily focuses on the "fun" aspect of the occasion.
.
Then why live around "worldly" people who celebrate b-days and such. Only go out to preach then.
Most Christians I know find themselves born amid the citys of the world, needing to be employed by worldly companies that provide a living wage for them to support their families. Jesus never told his followers to "get out of the world". Instead, he prayed for his father to watch over them while they were in the world.
.
>>Celebrating one's birthday, or that of another person's, is a practice of the "world". Schism! How could you be a member here for so long and still spout such garbage?
Just proves that I haven't let you rub off on me, Dave. LOL
Can you honestly defend the Watchtower's position in a way that disproves my accusation of arbitrariness? (Is "arbitrariness" a word?)
The Watchtower's position regarding the celebration of birthdays is a proper stand. To me there is a difference between a "birthday celebration" (a worldly practice) and commorating the birth of a child or family member. The latter, of course, would be done for the purpose of the family reflecting on the life (soul) that came into existence on the person's day of birth. The manner in which a Christian would deal with commemorating the birth of a child highlights the sacredness of life. The worldy "birthday celebration," however, is not done for the same purpose; and primarily focuses on the "fun" aspect of the occasion.

Christians are not to get "cozy" with people of the "world". Indeed, they are to be "no part" of the "world". "Friendship with the world is enmity with God," the scripture says. Not a jab at you; this is something that had never set right w/me:So why not live like the Amish have been known to, and remain in seclusion? I have more respect for them then I do other groups who throw up those verses when they see fit.
To be a Christian requires that the person not be a hermit. Christians are told to "go" spread their faith. In order to do that they MUST be around worldly peoples (while at the same time not picking up the worldly practices of those people, of course).
.
More than anything else, they are another way the Watchtower tries to make itself "differant" from everybody else, helping "prove" they are the only ones serving God.--drew sagan.
You hit on the "real" reason why true Christians don't celebrate birthdays, and it is proper that they not do so. Celebrating one's birthday, or that of another person's, is a practice of the "world". Christians are not to get "cozy" with people of the "world". Indeed, they are to be "no part" of the "world". "Friendship with the world is enmity with God," the scripture says.

as shown by the text below, the 7-headed wild beast has a name.. 16 and it puts under compulsion all persons, the small and the great, and the rich and the poor, and the free and the slaves, that they should give these a mark in their right hand or upon their forehead, 17 and that nobody might be able to buy or sell except a person having the mark, the name of the wild beast or the number of its name.
18 here is where wisdom comes in: let the one that has intelligence calculate the number of the wild beast, for it is a mans number; and its number is six hundred and sixty-six.
of course the beast's "number" is "666" -- but that's not it's "name".
Someone as smart as YOU are, AuldSoul, shouldn't have the least bit of trouble figuring out such a simple puzzle. You are pretty smart, aren't you?

The 1st clue I gave was:
And upon [the woman's] forehead was written a name, a mystery: “Babylon the Great". -- Revelation 17:5.The next 3 clues are found at Revelation 14:1, 7, 9 as follows:
- And I saw, and, look! the Lamb standing upon the Mount Zion, and with him a hundred and forty-four thousand having his name and the name of his Father written on their foreheads.
- “F EAR God and give him glory, because the hour of the judgment by him has arrived, and so worship the One who made the heaven and the earth and sea and fountains of waters.”
- “If anyone worships the wild beast and its image, and receives a mark on his forehead or upon his hand .....
Is there not a single person here who's worth a "shite" at figuring out a simple puzzle? Maybe there's a serious minded lurker out there who cares enough to want to unravel the "mystery" surrounding the name of the beast. For those of you who can't figure this out, you're gonna being ashamed of yourselves if I have to tell you the answer. It's really as simple as pie. Look at the clues above, and tell me the "name" of the beast. .

Watch yourself there now, SunnySpot, we don't want you to be having a stroke or heart attack over the things I post. Do you always stay this upset? Do you also get mad at your keyboard?
