  let's say you have 20 seconds (give or take) to make an impression on a jw.

  to say something that will stick in their head and make them really think.

  because you know, that once they realize you are an apostate, they will shut down anything else that you have to say.. what do you say?.

  No.

  "Wars, disease, and other ills have declined in recent years. Could the Watchtower be wrong about this being the time of the end?" -- Dave.

  Most definitely, the WTS is wrong about this being the time of the end. But being wrong on this point, as well as being wrong in other matters that I could mention, doesn't in itself rule the WTS out as being "the one true religion". It's the determination to be doing God's will that shows that a religion is "true".

  With all the debris floating around everywhere, would not the insects have their own way of survival without needing refuge in the Ark?

  Do you truly believe and stand behind the defense of the forbidding of birthdays that you are presenting here? Do you think it's 100%? 50%? How strongly do you feel about it?

  I don't have any beliefs that I'm not 100% convinced of, Dave.

  As a matter of fact, I copied the document yesterday and put it into my personal files for future reference. I didn't know that you were the author of that. I commend you for a well put together document, except where it falls short of taking the most important aspects into consideration. I'll have to take another look at it, after which I may have more to say.

  and there is the spiritual aspect, where the Creator of life is taken into account. The manner in which a Christian would deal with having a baby shower would put emphasis on the sacredness of life.

  I was a JW for over 20 years and in all that time I have never been to a JW baby shower where Jehovah or the sacredness of life was mentioned. It was always a typical fun event with presents, games, food and cake.

  I think you're being hardheaded, Saoirse. Having attended a "JW baby shower," you were among people whom you already knew appreciated the sacredness of life.

  There is nothing wrong with "fun", even with things that are purely done for fun. Why single out birthday celebrations?

  Because of the particular day it is, that's why. It's THE day on which a life (soul) exited its mother's womb and came into the world. For mature Christians, that makes it a spiritual matter formost. Of course the "world" is chiefly concerned with the "fun" aspect of the occasion. For that reason, mature Christians choose to not be involved with "birthday parties" at the workplace, school, etc. It's about appreciating the sacredness of life, along with the recognition of the need to be saved out of the dying state in which we all find ourselves. Besides, there are other occasions whereby "fun" can be had, so it's not as if Christians are robbed of having any fun by their rejection of the world's "birthday celebration".

  Welcome, slpdajp! Schizm's right, the magi appeared a few years after Jesus was born. Whether they arrived on his birthday or not is not revealed in the Bible.

  Why of course they arrived on Jesus' birthday! We know that because of the Manger scene the Catholic Church had set up in front of their church this last Christmas. The Magi--all three of them--were right there with Joseph, Mary, the shephards, with Jesus lying in the manger. I saw it with my own eyes! And we all know that the Catholic Church wouldn't ever stretch the truth ........ don't we?

  Catholic "Manger Scene" misrepresents the facts!

  i drove by the local catholic church this evening and happened to notice there was a manger scene set up out front of the church.

  flanking one side of the child's crib were mary, a few shepherds, and a cow.

  flanking the other side of the crib were joseph and the so-called "three wise men" (more accurately known as the magi).. after having seen this display it made me wonder whether or not the local catholics know that the magi did not make their visit while jesus was an infant lying in a manger.

  We have a creche in our home and the Magi are there too. I suppose one could make a mountain out of a molehill on this but I don't see the point. We know they weren't there at the birth...but Christmas celebrates all the events of Jesus' infancy.--cabasilas (a professed Catholic).

  It's not silly to be an advocate of truth. If all who profess to be "Christian" were truly advocates of Biblical truth then confusion wouldn't be as rife as what it is today. In my opinion it's quite irresponsible for the local Catholic church to have created a PUBLIC display of the manger scene with the Magi present. The crime is that such a display misleads passersby who observe it. They are left with the impression that this is what the Bible teaches. That's the reason I say that if Catholics really CARED they'd be more careful. The fact is, though, Catholics do NOT care, even as is evidenced by YOUR attempt to make light of the issue ("make a mountain out of a molehill")--Schizm.

  The question you posed betrays how the churches of Christendom have caused people to believe things that are not true. Yes, because of Christendom portraying the Magi right alongside the Shepherds in the "Manger scene" it has caused many people to not accurately know the Bible story surrounding Jesus' birth.   Didn't Joseph & Mary accept the 3 gifts given to them on Jesus birthday?

  
  

  It definitely wasn't on Jesus' birthday that the Magi brought the gifts. Jesus was living in a house by that time, and possibly nearing 2 years of age. The Magi's gifts weren't for the purpose of a birthday present. Instead, they came to present gifts to a person whom they believed was destined to become a "king".
