I'm sure this has been noted before, but for the sake of this particular discussion I think I'll do it again.
If you go to http://www.e-sword.net/ you can download a free electronic bible and many, many different translations. It is an excellent piece of software and you can get a lot of other things like biblical maps, commentaries, dictionaries, etc.
But the point I wanted to stress right here is that the e-Sword software contains a "compare" function wherein you can select as many different translations as you want and it will compare the verse selected side-by-side. It would make the comparisons like above in this thread a lot easier and faster.
Plus, the whole thing is free for download. You can send the guy a donation and he'll send you a CD but you can download all for free, regardless. Pretty cool.

In keeping with the Jews/Israelites and their homeland, do you think the current exodus (how fitting...) of Jewish settlers from Gaza will raise any eyebrows in WT-land? Any more "parallels"?

However, a far grander Jerusalem continued to be favored by Jehovah. Galatians 4:26 calls it the “Jerusalem above.” It is Jehovah’s “woman,” his own heavenly wifelike organization.
OK, this just creeps me out a bit! Jehovah's "woman" and "wifelike" regarding an organiazation sounds really weird.
I keep getting an image of a small dog humping a stuffed animal --- like the toy is his "woman."

To all the other atheists/agnostics out there
by robhic inafter you got from behind the barrier that was keeping you from thinking logically and had removed the blinders that prevented you from processing information using common sense rather than the 2000+ year old superstitions of some nomadic goat-herders, did you start to find that religious-centric or god-related statements made you shake your head in incredulity?.
case in point: just yesterday as i watched the 5:00 news, a story came on about a young man who had moved from here to california.
while in california he died but the family was so poor they could not afford to have the body shipped back to new orleans.

Even if God WERE real, why would anyone want to love it? I really get annoyed when I hear intelligent people talking about God without even questioning his existence.
I think that a lot of religious belief is because most people are raised from childhood being told by folks you respect (parents, family, teachers) that religion/god of some sort is the real deal. And they only do it because they were told by the previous generation the same things. It's a cycle. People generally don't bother to question it (or at least for a long time) and it continues.
As far as "love" goes, I agree 100%. You have to know someone to love them. It's not a petty thing. And from reading the bible, the only knowledge (a least to me) that one gets is that god -- creator of everyone and everything -- is a violent, petty, mysoginistic, ego-driven flip-floppper who favors Jews over all others and can't be trusted. Why would I love (or even like!) this person?

Tetrapod sez:
that's hilarious! you know, i don't mean to sound rude, but you probably have a high percentage of blatantly religious folk down there in new orleans. jesus or voodoo or whatever. you probably see it a lot in your daily life, and that sucks. it would make my head spin too.
Absolutely! The RC church has a very strong hold on this entire town if not state. Hell, we're the only state in the US where the counties are called "parishes" instead. And our football team are the "Saints." (Seems the deities would see to it that a team with some theo-sounding name connection wouldn't suck so bad!)
Yep, jesus is alive and well in the New Orleans area and his works are everywhere.
... it's the ability to absolve one of responsibility, and get the problem fixed via random probability. this pisses me off sometimes, because we are supposed to be civilised, and yet we still pray for guidance, or more often, when we are in a tight spot. it irritates me because if some of us apes can "get it", then what the hell is the matter with the rest of them?
And the fact that a technologically advanced civilization resorts to calling upon a mythological entity devised thousands of years ago seems so ironic. "Gee, I hope jesus/god will help me figure the answers on my calculus test." Calculus? He or his followers probably weren't capable of even rudimentary arithmetic! Better find a "math god" to help.
And do you think the submariners a few years ago on the Kurst got screwed because techno-challenged god couldn't figure out what everyone was talking about?
"Huh, what's this submarine thingie these mortals are talking about?"?
They were doomed from the start.

If Jehovah provided the Thermo King trailer in 1971, then he must have provided the John Morrell plant where it came from. And If he provided the John Morrell plant he MUST have provided the Sioux Falls Stock Yards across the street that provides the animals to be slaughtered. And if he provided the Sioux Falls Stock Yards, then he's responsible for the 3,000 tons of hog manure piled in the yard stinking up the town.
Gary, why so skeptical? Of course that's the correct progression of events. He created all the livestock -- he had to provide some means of administering to it! And you forgot his loving provision of the renderers, too...

Case in point: just yesterday as I watched the 5:00 news, a story came on about a young man who had moved from here to California. While in California he died but the family was so poor they could not afford to have the body shipped back to New Orleans. They interviewed the distraught family members and friends who said that since they couldn't find the money to pay for shipping the body home they'd just have to pray and ask god to intervene. (Pretty standard religious-centric stuff...)
This caught my new, more sensitive attention (the talk about god) so I paid closer attention. Yep, as luck would have it god intervened! The New Orleans Saints football team gathered the required money and not only paid for the body to be returned but for funeral expenses too. Pan to the overjoyed family group squealing with excitement and tearfully expressing how their god had not let them down.
Say what? It was the Saints football team who footed the bill. If they were so close with god why hasn't he seen fit to give them a little more luck on the playing field and/or to have possibly made a playoff contention at least once in over 35 years?!?! Why does god allow them to suck so much? And the family. If god was doing such a bang-up job of watching their backs why did he allow the young man to die in the first place? I know this opens up a whole new springboard for argument but that wasn't my intention here.
I find myself listening to the everyday stories that have a god component with such a different perspective nowadays. It is so illogical (Like Mr. Spock on Star Trek would undoubtedly feel.) and counter-intuitive. Ask god for help and he magically motivates a football team to pony up the bucks. Why hasn't he answered a few prayers along the way to improve their less-than-stellar performance on the field? Why so damn selective? And why not just give credit to the team for being nice guys?
Yeah, I know "god answers prayers but sometimes his answer is 'no!'" or we can't know the mind of god or that he works in mysterious ways. But how about a playoff? And why didn't he pay just a little closer attention to the guy who died? Why wait this long to tend to his needs? Day late and a dollar short to my way of thinking.
Guy dies. Family can't afford to retrieve the body. Professional football team comes to the rescue. God gets the credit. But the Saints paid the money and the guy is still dead. This kinda stinks...
Do others find they are processing these type stories completely in a new light (no pun intended) now? Just curious because every mention of the word god these days causes my mind to spasm.

Recycled, retitled, ridiculous.
by robhic ini have read here how there are so few "new" items coming from the wts these days.
that most all of the books, talks, wts, meetings, conventions, etc.
are just repeats repackaged from ones gone by.

They are all the same.
The formula works like this:
Standard program repeat every year + New Theme
This year its "Godly Obedience", last year was "Walk with God", etc.
Just interweave "obedience" into the standard fare and you have a new convention!
Thanks everyone for your input. Maybe I'll use Zeke's formula above and make one up for her. That should mysify and confuse her.
