I hate the holiday too. Is it even a holiday? I hate the pressure to buy things for people to show you love them. It's all a bunch of nonesense. The everyday little things and the unexpected surprises are enough for me. I don't need or want to wait on a holiday for affection.

What is the big deal about Valentines Day?
by damselfly ini don't quite understand all the "hype" and the endless questions about what my s/o is going to do/get me for the "big day".
i think diamonds are ugly, i don't like gold, flowers die and if want chocolate i'll buy it myself thanks.
honestly what i want for valentines day is for him to start being financially responsible and pick up after himself.

LOL Elsewhere....
Did you really think they'd kill off any star charachters?
These show are so god damn predictable!
But, I am hooked on it. LOL What the hell does that say about me.
I wish they would have some freaking balls!!!
They took the easy way out with Sandra Oh's charachter having a mis-carriage before she had the abortion.
But I am a faithful viewer. -

What's your expierence at a DUB wedding/reception?
by stillAwitness ini'm invited to wedding/reception tomorrow (on christmas-naturally) only reason i'm going is because its my one chance to get new shoes, dress, the whole bit at my mother's expense (since she seems to think i will find my future middle-aged elder husband at one of these functions)
i definetly plan to buy one of those mini-bottles of seagrams and get buzzed of course.
who wants to listen to 10 different speeches from family and friends about "how wonderful this spiritual union is of so and so) yawn!

My heart breaks for you elsewhere. I'm sure you expected the treatment and have come to terms with it but it is still heart breaking.
Some weddings were fun, some boring as hell. I guess hell wouldn't be boring.
The beest weddings I've attended were in my early teenage years dubs and worldly weddings.
I remember one wedding I went to, an elder (I think he was an elder at the time) and his wife decided to walk home about a mile from the home where the reception was being held because they were drunk out of their minds.
This elder was always being "pushed down" from his elder thrown for him and his wife's drinking habits. LOL
He either hided his drunken self very well now or really is on the wagon. He's been an elder without interruption for the past 8 years or more. -

What proportion of JW kids stay Witnesses? How about in your cong?
by jwfacts inthe wts is currently growing at about 1.3 % which is similar to the global propulation growth rate.
if all the jw kids stayed as jws then the religion could grow as quickly as it is now without any door knocking.. if in 2005 1.2 billion hours witnessing resulted in the religion only growing at the rate it should be naturally it suggests a lot a kids are leaving, or doorknocking is not having very good results.. of about 100 people born into the wts that i can remember in my congregations in australia about 3/4 of them have left.
is that the same in your congregation?

I heard somebody say that there isn't. I curious to here any other thoughts on this.
I never heard such a claim before. I'm sure there is already a thread on this. If any of you know of one can you point me to it?
Thanks. -

Artist/Band: Krauss Alison
Lyrics for Song: Gravity
Lyrics for Album: Lonely Runs Both Ways
I left home when I was seventeen
I just grew tired of falling down
And I'm sure I was told
The allure of the road
Would be all I found
And all the answers that I started with
Turned out questions in the end
So years roll on by
And just like the sky
The road never ends
(Chorus:)
And the people who love me still ask me
When are you coming back to town
And I answer quite frankly
When they stop building roads
And all God needs is gravity to hold me down
(Chorus:)
And the people who love me still ask me
When are you coming back to town
And I answer quite frankly
When they stop building roads
And there ain't no more highways to be found
And I answer quite frankly
When they stop building roads
And all God needs is gravity to hold me down -

I'm in Orange County and I grew up in Los Angeles County. I post on here each month about the monthly meetups I organize with other former witnesses. It is very casual. We meet at casual restaurants and just talk and laugh a whole lot about our experience in the dub-world.
We'll be meeting this week, Friday the 27th at 7:45 at Mimi's Cafe in the City of Industry. It's about 20 miles east of downtown L.A. right off the Pomona 60 Freeway.
If you can join us pm me and I'll give you my cell number.

Generation Change
by slugga ini left the org slightly before the change in the "generation that was alive in 1914" thing was announced and wondered, what were peoples in the congregations reactions after this was announced and did it you notice people falling away because of it?
has it had a damaging effect?

I was so clueless back then myself. I was only 18 or 19 but I still feel like I should have know better and questioned it. But, in all honesty it seems like I only learned how to crtically think when I found this site about four years ago. Sad but true.
Well, I do remember being relieved at the time with the new light. I was living a "double life" at the time and I was afraid Armageddon was going to happen any day. Then with the new light I felt relieved that I had more time to get my act together.
There is one older witness lady that I knew. It seemed at about that time she stopped pioneering after many many years. She said it was to take care of her elderly mother. She went back to college for exactly what I don't know. She missed many many meetings and I believe now she is in active. Her husband remained an elder though. I don't really no the whole story. But I do think her "slowing down" had something to do with the generation change.
