BBC turns its back on year of Our Lord: 2,000 years of Christianity jettisoned for politically correct 'Common Era'
Last updated at 12:43 AM on 25
The BBC has been accused of 'absurd political correctness' after dropping the terms BC and AD in case they offend non-Christians.
The Corporation has replaced the familiar Anno Domini (the year of Our Lord) and Before Christ with the obscure terms Common Era and Before Common Era.
Some of the BBC's most popular programmes including University Challenge, presented by Jeremy Paxman, and Radio 4's In Our Time, hosted by Melvyn Bragg, are among the growing number of shows using the new descriptions.

by Witness 007 ini realized today that i have no friends at all...it's me and my wife and two dogs and three goldfish, thats it's....i'm not too bothered by it but my wife wants to go back just for the friends.....i have de-programed her out of the "matrix" and she now thinks for herself, but she still feels like she needs a spritual side and friends.
i have people at work but we don't hang out.

Witness 007,
My wife and I are in the same boat and it's been 3 years, we still live in the territory, I hardly see them and I go all over town.
We vacationed with some of these people and it all counts for nothing.

Why So Many Young People Are Leaving The Watchtower
by Jeremy C ini have been giving a lot of thought to the young people who are leaving the watchtower organization in recent years.
last night, i was reading the thread posted by jwfacts a while back in which he provided some statistics and graphs showing the rapidly declining growth in the watchtower.
one factor that was discussed at length was the high number of young people who do not stay in the organization.

Jeremy,
Excellent post! I really enjoyed reading it.
You are absolutely right on this issue. The Watchtower offers a dry, stale, repetitive and monotonous form of worship and as you said, it is a one size fits all. There is absolutely nothing for young people in any way, shape or form. The best the "faithful and discreet slave" can offer its young people is a lifetime of "service" and more "service" - Bethel, Gilead etc, this is the best they can do.
Any talents or gifts a young person has cannot be pursued unless, of course, it is in Kingdom service.
The advent of social media in the last five years is the final nail in the Watchtower coffin - no longer can they control information as they once could.
I see steady decline over the next few years.

Trying to Salvage a Friendship
by Quendi inmy friends,.
i need your counsel on a personal matter, and i hope you will give it in love.
as some of you know, i was disfellowshipped six years ago, but it wasn't until june 2010 that i made up my mind never to return to the wts.

Quendi,
That was an amazing story and you told it beautifully. You have a way with words.
I too have lost a friend in death, my only true friend - he died suddenly in his sleep.
I had another friend who I reached out to a couple of months ago. We have not spoken for over 10 years. I wrote to this individual via Facebook - I had hoped to receive some sort of reply but there was nothing.
You win some you lose some. Sometimes, those who leave want absolutely nothing to do with the org no matter how many friends they had.
I am glad you had some success getting reaquainted with your friend, but now a door has been opened and you may be left with more questions than answers.
Good luck!

FYI
As of May 2011: Greetings! From worldwide report a brother from Wallkill shared during congregation May 10, 2010.
There are now 16 printing branches in the world, all of them are electronically connected so if one branch had to shut down because of disaster such as an earthquake, all they need to do is transfer the files to another branch and shift the workload there.
The Truth book referred to as the “blue bombshell” was printed in 117 languages – totaling some 107 million copies. To date the Bible Teach Book has reached some 216 languages – 161 million copies.
They are no longer printing soft covered Bibles and only Wallkill prints Bibles for the entire world – 40,000 a month. The New World Translation is available in 90 languages with an additional 6 in Sign Language. To date 166 million copies.
The Kingdom Hall program began in 1999, 144 countries are in it with 2000 brothers working with it. At the start there was a need for 22,613 KHs worldwide now it’s down to 6,877. In 2010 alone, 1,942 KHS were built.
In 1999 Malawi described JWs as “a people without churches”. By September 2010 the brothers have put up 1000 KHs. The dictionaries in their language now describe JWs as “a people who build many churches”.
In one Asian country where our work is banned, the brothers were building a KH and they hired a building contractor to work along with them. The contractor was so impressed by the neat appearance and diligence of the brothers that he asked them who they were and what they were building. To maintain confidentiality, the brothers replied ‘they are just ordinary construction workers’ and are ‘building an office for their owner’. He said he had been working in construction for over 20 years and ‘this is no ordinary construction site – your owner must pay you a lot to demand such a high standard’. The brothers said that ‘clean clothing and good work habits are required’ by the owner and ‘ALL are happy with the pay the owner is giving them’!
In Haiti all the witnesses are housed now while the country has not made any progress in helping their citizens. By means of our donations to the Worldwide Work, our brothers have built 1700 wood/with galvanized sheeting homes for the brothers. The Governing Body has approved of sending 4 missionary homes that are pre-fabricated - built in China – shipped in containers and a crew will assemble them. Then Wallkill will send the appliances, furniture and other necessary items and they’ll be ready for the missionaries to move in. If it is successful, they will do this in other countries as well.
In 2010 there were 51 million visits to the Societies website, an average of 113,000 daily on wt.org alone. 4.5 million hours were spent reading our publications on the web. An average of 100 daily requests for bible studies received.

Found this article, it's way easier to understand than Watchtower's definition of a generation!
How Long Is A Generation?
In general we think of a generation being about 25 years - from the birth of a parent to the birth of a child. We also generally accept that the length of a generation in earlier periods of history was closer to 20 years when humans mated younger and life expectancies were shorter.
However, generation lengths are not certain and keep evolving. We are now already starting to consider that a generation could be longer than the accepted 25 years. Men could be at least a third longer, so 35-year generations with women one-sixth longer, 30-year generations.
Why Age Matters
In family history, the length of a generation can be a really helpful way to check your research. If you had a generation gap of say, 35 years or more, it may be worthwhile looking into this a bit further. What you could find is that you’ve missed a generation, or that information on two different individuals has been linked to the same person.
This type of discovery could then lead you on to finding a whole new branch of your family tree.
Your Generation
Because generation lengths help us to spot missing information in our family lineage, it is a good idea to decide what generation length suits you.
If you are looking back at ancestors 50 or more generations in the past, using the ‘accepted’ 20 or 25 years as a conversion factor could underestimate the time interval. But if you’re looking back only a few generations and you want to convert generations to years, using 30 to 35 year generation gaps, or even one that you’ve developed based on your own family history research, is a great place to start.
You could then check the accuracy of these generation periods by comparing all-male or all-female ranges in your own family lines for a chosen period, perhaps 1700 to 2000. Then you would see how closely the intervals agree with the number of years you are using to estimate a generation.
Discoveries
In family history, conclusions about relationships can change whenever better evidence is discovered. Similarly, current understandings are subject to change as more data becomes available and the understanding of this data improves. This is also the case with generation length; so don’t feel that you must follow the latest convention, using a length that you feel comfortable with is fine.
The length of a generation and using them as a tool to researching your family history is a great way of checking your findings as well as making an unexpected discovery; you never know what you might stumble upon!

Should conscientious objectors to gay marriage be allowed?
by rebel8 inprevious, related thread: ny catholic church on new gay marriage law.
gay marriage is finally legal in my state.

The woman decided she would obey God rather than men. In the Bible, a marriage is a union of one man and one woman.
She did the right thing and resigned.
The people of New York were denied the right to vote to change the definiton of marriage.

Why do exJW family members not reach out to other exJW family members?
by truthseeker ini don't know if this strange phenomenon is unique to my family but it seems that those who have left the truth have little to no interest in reaching out to those family members who have also left the religion.. it seems topsy turvy to me.
surely, there would be common ground and mutual support for those leaving/have left but this does not seem to be the case.. does anyone else have this problem?.

WasAnElder,
Yeah, that's about the long and short of it, only the "truth" is what kep families united yet I saw preciousl little family unity growing up.
Scully, as I recently found out, reconnecting can be awkward, especially after many years, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.
Ditto the following:
The ones I totally don't get are my raised-JW-but-never-dunked siblings. It's like pulling hens' teeth to maintain a relationship with them, and I'm at the point where I really don't care for being the one doing all the work.
I'm already at that point, they don't reach out to me and they don't try to make it work.
