Why do you talk about desolate places?
Norfolk Island is not a desolate place. It's a beautiful and interesting island and anything but child abuse to live there when there are about 2300 inhabitants.
The same with the rain forest in Equador.
Or is it better to live in a crime infested mega city? Is that child abuse too?

And WingCommander. This isn't US, Swiss... against the rest of the world. I am Swiss and Swiss / US gun laws have nothing in common. Just because you can keep the swiss army rifle at home (without amunition) doesn't make it an arms pro country. Most of the people in Switzerland don't own a gun and those that do, use it for sports or hunting and not to have the deluded idea for protection against criminals or terrorists which is a complete illusion.

the final straw for me is the upcoming watchtower study this weekend encouraging us to shun our own family members (our own mothers if need be) if they are disfellowshipped....a step too far for my liking.

I sent several letters to Bethel.
The innocent ones they might answer you.
When criticizing them or suggesting reform they either don't answer or tell the CO to answer you directly or through the elders.
Then you are on their radar as someone who has doubts. They will try to readjust you. If that doesn't work over a period of time they leave you alone if you are lucky or they disfellowship you for apostasy (thats what they did in my case).
