Do you have any "one-liners" for drive-by witnessing?
by Faithful Witness ini am looking for things i can say in passing, when i meet some of my jw friends.
we used to attend meetings, but have not been officially recognized yet, as apostates.
we were good and curious students, but fell away and were choked out by weeds.. since i will be renewing my bible student status soon, i am hoping this will open more windows into the organization.

I am 46. I just started a 401K three months ago.
Not long ago, while I was still "in", the topic of 401s came up between me and a coworker. He asked if I was plugged in and I said, "No. My retirement is already secured. No need for a 401." That probably left him with the impression that I had a secret pile of money stashed away somewhere. Actually, I knew that Armageddon would be here soon. No need to deprive myself of any portion of my paycheck now.
That was then.
I have done some forecasting and I am fortunate that I do not carry too much debt. If I behave myself I can be debt free in less than five years (mortgage in about 13 years) and then begin pouring all that money into IRAs, etc. I am also fortunate that I have a reasonably good paying job so the current, day-today needs are not a struggle. Not bad for someone who was able to avoid the temptation of a demonic higher education.
Forecasting is one thing. Life's curve balls are quite another and I am feeling a bit nervous. This is something I should have been taught and encouraged to begin 25 years ago. Retirement is not something you can just throw together at the last minute. ESPECIALLY in this financial climate.

The US Government actually deserves credit for the WT heading it's way down....
by EndofMysteries inthe government wanted the wt shut down as well.
they found out that the wt teaches all it's members not to get an education, not to get any good paying job, to spend all their time placeing magazines and being window washers.
so they said, we'll make the cost of insurance, infact require insurance by law, increase the cost of living on everything, then the wt members won't have any spare money to donate and the wt will just fade away due to lack of money.. so the wt after the economy and all cost of living going through the roof the past few years, plus some lawsuits, is suddenly cash starved.

I think your tongue-in-cheek thread title would be more apt if applied to, say... restaurants. People will stop going out to eat long before they will quit donating money to the institutions that will save them at Armageddon.
You make a good point about their own doctrine coming around to bite them in the butt. Their own teachings promote the development of a lower/lower middle class income group - and that's during the working years. This group will be in even worse shape later for lack of retirement planning due to the hope that Armageddon is right around the corner.
Then they try to subside off the crumbs of that group.

Given some of the drivel that passes for news worthiness these days, it absolutely amazes me that these stories are not gaining some significant headlines, if any at all. Has the Catholic pedophile scandal burned us out on the topic so thoroughly that the VFW Ladies Auxiliary 12th annual bake sale tops the news lineup?

by AuntConnie intold my husband to put a muzzle on my mouth over the blood dogma.
we all were driving around in field service when the topic of "which fragments would you take if you were in a car accident or cut yourself badly".
said his choice is a personal one, another sister with chronic health problems said she had no problem with the governing body's new light on taking various fragments.

Interesting stuff.
So how does a scripture like Hebrews 13:17 play in to this conversation?
Be obedient to those who are taking the lead among YOU and be submissive, for they are keeping watch over YOUR souls as those who will render an account...
... especially the part about these "leaders' rendering an account?

1975 - The Killer WT quote
by tim hooper inone thing is absolutely certain, bible chronology reinforced with fulfilled bible prophecy shows that six thousand years of mans existence will soon be up, yes, within this generation!
(matt.
24:34) this is, therefore, no time to be indifferent and complacent.

Great quotes, Trebor.
This one is quite ironic:
Our Kingdom Ministry on page 3 in the May 1974 edition states:
" Reports are heard of brothers selling their homes and property and planning to finish out the rest of their days in this old system in the pioneer service. Certainly this is a fine way to spend the short time remaining before the wicked world's end ."... because the only thing I remember as a child in the aftermath of the 1975 debacle was being told how many Witnesses went out and bought expensive cars, houses and boats in anticipation of never having to pay them off.

The GB Want More Gimme Gimme Feed Me More Money, What Do We Get?
by LoisLane looking for Superman inif we keep dishing out cash, to pay for all of our wonderful new light and spiritual food, have we, in return, actually only been fed garbage?.
example.. when they tell us not to bring up anything in older publications, because it is no long considered "the truth"(tm), was it ever the truth(tm)?.
have we been strung along for 130 years, on imitation food, masquerading, as real food?.

God would not include prophecies in the holy writ unless He wanted people to read them and not fear them or be caught unawares when they come to pass.
I see your point, but it is all so subjective with each party claiming truth. It has become humanly impossible to legitimately lay claim to absolute accuracy - ESPECIALLY when you start quoting Revelation with all it's imagery.
For the sake of argument, let's assume that every understanding of prophesy you just mentioned above is wrong. When the prophesies begin to be fulfilled in some other way, it will constitute an "aha!" moment for us, but not necessarily catch us off guard or fearfull... because we knew SOMETHING was coming.
I believe the argument the author was making is that Jesus gave prophesies about his second coming that could reasonable be applied to every generation that has lived over the last 2000 years, having the affect of keeping every generation sharp and on it's toes. He reasons that THAT was the purpose of the prophesy - not the actual, factual, absolutist identification of a pinpoint in time.
In your earlier post you said: Jesus used prophecy to show the people that God knew all things from the beginning and to show them the signs of his [second] coming, which all the prophets looked forward to.
But the information provided could be broadly applied by several generations... and he knew it.
