I think any organized religion dwells on control to some degree. They have to make every church uniform and the only way to do that is to control the congregation members to some degree. Maybe all aren't as bad as others, but they all exibit some form of control on the believers.

Is the JW religion that unique ??? do others have the same problems ???
by run dont walk inis the jw religion that different from other religions, i am not talking about beliefs, but the set up and blueprint that they work from.. i had a great discussion the other day with 2 hetterites (not sure how to spell it) both in their mid-twenties, they talked about how they had just left about one month ago and were going up to fort mcmurray to work, as they talked about their childhood, their beliefs, their upbringing, their rules, do's and don'ts, i swear they could of been jw's, i mean they went throught the exact things that alot of us on this board went through, it was amazing and frightening.. not knowing alot about other religions, are the problems we went through with the jw religion any different from someone who is mormon, muslim etc.
etc., do all religions although different beliefs by far, basically have the same blueprint in runnning their organization ???
and controlling people ??

It is another well placed "generality" with a slew of possibilities for fulfillment.
Good Point. I guess that is why I am curious about how other people view those scriptures. Curiosity is one of my major vices!!!

This was the first big thing I had issues with. I had always been taught I had to preach to inherit gods kingdom. I had memorized both scriptures at an extremely early age. Coming out of the congregation I felt I had to do something. I prayed and prayed, asking what I should do. One night just before sleep as I was pondering those scriptures, I came to the following conclusion.
What was "this good news"? That the Christ had arrived.
So I decided that the Good News had already been preached. That work is done as far as I am concerned. If not by the disciples and first century christians, then certainly by catholic missionaries. All around the world people have been told Christ came to earth. Some choose to believe, some don't but the message has been spread.
Just wondering about other opinions on this matter. No criticism, just an open discussion. OPINIONS?

Mom's completely mental...
by KistByQpid innever having been a jw...i really wish i could understand this better.
shortly after my dad died, mom starts her "bible study" with the nice ladies from the hall.
fastforward a couple of years...she's now a baptised jw...and a totally different person.

I agree with Mary. The hall is a place where newbies feel welcome. They feel special and are surrounded by people. Lonely people and loners are usually drawn to the congregation for these very reasons.
Loophole: JW's never teach anything about saying No being wrong. Tell your mother it is OK for her to say no. She has been extremely lenient and we are sure the brothers appreciate her kindness, but the car just can't take having that many miles put on it right now, so I think you are going to have to tell them no for a while. I am sure some other kind brother or sister will let them use their car for a bit.
Be gentle and try to suggest things in a way that make her feel like she has done what god has asked and she needs to go no further. This kind of reasoning is the only thing that works on those completely taken in by the Borg.

Whats the deal with the napkins on the head?
by RoadDoctor in.
what is the idea behind the sisters wearing a head covering when they lead a group for field service?
is there something written in the bible new world translation about this?

I hated putting that stuff on my head. Bunch of crazy shit. But it is in the bible. I think Paul was a bit of an extremist, I mean after all didn't Jesus have long hair? It wasn't a disgrace to him. It wasn't like they had barber shears back in the day and they all didn't have those shitty feathered hairstyles as shown in the WT publications. Maybe Paul was speaking of varying lengths of hair. God only knows.

How many of you had the jw double life?
by obiwan ini was the prime example, if you looked in the dictionary under double life, my face would be right next to it!
i would party on saturday night, and drag my butt to the sunday meeting hungover.
does anyone here know how hard it is to answer a question during the wt study hungover?

I led a double life and so did everyone in our hall except for one sister in our hall. I never hid the fact that I was worldly at school because all the other JW's in my school acted worldly too.

What was your worst/best experience in field service?
by obiwan ini will have to say mine is a worst/best experience.
i was out in serviceon a saturday with my mother of all things, we went to a door knocked, and this awesome looking 16 or 17 year old girl opens the door wearing nothing but a dress shirt.

Best experience: We pulled into a driveway and a gentleman came out to greet us. Brought some beers along with him and offered one to each of us in the car. We declined since not only were we in a car, we were all underage (not that being underage ever stopped us before mind you but were doing the lords work and didn't want to bring reproach). My friend started offering the magazines and the gentleman, drunk, said he didn't believe in god since Nam. We had a brief discuss about god. Then he proceeded to tell us stories about Vietnam which led some how to frying up a mess of dog for dinner and how tasty it was. He finished by inviting us by sometime when we weren't preaching about god for some beer and fried dog. It was the most bizarre discussion I have ever had with anyone. It was the topic of conversation for the rest of the day. CLASSIC!!!

Confession.
by Englishman inis it really good for the soul?
does it make us clean and pure again?.
or is it the easy way out, a way of shrugging off our misdoings and leaving us free to behave badly again, for example by visiting a confessional box each week?.

I believe you should never confess. Well unless you murdered somebody or something really heavy like that. I personally never confessed unless caught and couldn't talk my way out of it, which happened maybe 1% of the time. I figure god sees what I do. He judges me in the end, therefore it is between me and god and everyone else should mind their own d@mn business.
